Anyway, does anyone know why they can’t fix the nosewheel steering? Can a part not be obatined from a truly static example?
Paul.
Well originally British Aerospace were quite enthusiatic towards the upkeep of the airframe even letting the guys at Woodford have the use of part of a hanger to help restore her…..
I think that the problem is these dats is the fact that they have to justify everything to shareholders and are unable to spend money on such a project which is a shame.
With todays redundancies at Woodford, the cancellation of the Bae 146/RJ aircraft and the problems with the Nimrod, I wonder how long this site will remain open???
Paul.
Thanks for that!
WHAT ABOUT VULCAN NEWS THOUGH? DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY? GOOD OR BAD?
Paul.
I am totally unsurprised by that. It’s about time we took pride in the engineering achievements of Great Britain.
The Vulcan bomber is unique and a milestone in aviation. It annoys me that the company that built the thing can’t show a bit of pride in itself without instead, doffing thie caps to shareholders all the time.
This would never happen in America.
Paul.
….and also: When I lived in Wigan, I used to wite to them all the time asking if I could help to work on the Vulcan on my weekends off…….
Never got a single reply!
I doubt it unfortunately. At the last airshow I asked one of the ground crew and they said no because “it is an industrial site and the company strictly adhere to the health and safety at work act”.
The aircraft is probably taxiable but is not in as good a condition as the other live Vulcans. Work on this aircraft being sporadic.
The men who work on this aircraft are all getting rather old now and I can imagine that the aircraft will fall into disrepair when they stop looking after her, as the company don’t seem very interested in it and with access to the site being restricted, there will be no one else allowed to work on her…….
Whaddayareckon?
Paul.
Just thought that I would re-activate this thread! There must be some news!!!!!!
I just hope that TVOC and BAH are keeping quiet because they have something exciting up their sleeve…….
I don’t want to be a doom monger, but I heard that they are now unable to put her back together again, at least without a serious cash injection:( Is this true? I hope not…….
Also, can anyone expand on two Vulcan items that I am certain I read on the internet a year or two ago, but there is nothing on about it now:
1) Is it true that the UK’s servicable vulcans (especially the Wellesbourne Vulcan-short runway and all that!) carry enough fuel to enable them to divert to another airfield if something goes drastically wrong during a fast taxi run? I am sure that I read this in on the XM655 site a while back but now it seems to have been taken off…….
2) Did XM575 (or another vulcan?) originally go to Bruntingthorpe for preservation, flying to another airfield in the Midlands a short time after in the 80’s instead? If so, how was this squared up with BAe/CAA/RAF at the time?
Paul.
It’s George Aird in a pre-production lightning (XG???) after a double reheat fire warning. He chose to ignore the warning thinking that it was spurious and felt the controld stiffen followed by a rapid pitch up just before landing! He ejected and came to in a greenhouse……….
Paul.
Skyjet, that would be cool!!!!! My address is:

Thanks,
Paul.
Thanks very much for all your replies! Does anyone know what happened to the Tridents that went to Zaire in 1985?
thanks!
RE: Re Former USAAF Aistrips Uk
Don’t know about the units. I do know for a fact though, that the Prom’ at New Brighton/Birkenhead was used to assemble and fly these aircraft from, as soon as they had come off the ships. RE Tatton park and Haydock, I am back up North for one day only on 8/2 so I will endeavour to find out for you! Tatton Park is dead easy, as the runway is still there, it is merely a clearing in the trees in front of the house and was used pre and post war by the Edgerton family who lived there also.
Haydock, I will try to get info for you, but I know that there is no trace of the landing ground now. There used to be German and Italian POW’s nearby too and it was also a site for the Royal Observer Corps during and after the war as well and was named ( I think) RAF Haydock.

RE: MUSEUMS
It’s not really big enough to have themed areas really though is it? I mean the Shackleton dominates the hall and really all the other airframes are shoehorned around it!
It’s not bad though considering that there is little else in the North West aviation wise for people to see.
Paul.
RE: Re Former USAAF Aistrips Uk
What about Haydock, Merseyside, Birkenhead Promenade and Tatton park, Cheshire?
Paul
RE: Lancaster B.X KB976
Is’nt the lincoln stored ourside in bits at an airfield down south?
Paul.
RE: Mystery Vulcan
It may be XA892, scrapped at Halton in 1972, although in my reference book, it says 7746M.
