    RE: Flying Easyjet

Well I’m doing LPL-LTN on Saturday for the first time, and I’m sending my parents for their 30th wedding anniversary to BCN with them, so they had better be good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    I’m sure they are!!!!!!!!! 🙂

RE: The future of the 757

Well personally, I think that the 757 will be the 737 of it’s generation. As per the previous comment by Matilainen, it is a versatile aircraft which can be used for many roles. I think that whilst not many more will be made, it’s versatility will keep it in the air for many years to come. Whilst I am not an advocate of either Airbus or Boeing, it’s all very well to ‘knock’ boeing for their so called re-hashes of old aircraft, (the 757, 737, 727 and 707 have all got the same cabin cross section too) but these are tried and tested airframe designs. Just look at how long the 737 has been in service for… Older models of 757’s are being refurbished for cargo use and will fly for a long time to come… The 707 of the 21st century????

    RE: Singapore Girls

Well I’ve been with Singapore Airlines and found the service to be very good. I just thought that they were very professional and helpful. I got an upgrade to Raffles class and they kept coming over chatting to me, not because they had to, but because they wanted to. That’s good service. Good luck with your career!!!!!!!!!

    RE: BA and it’s Tails!

Well I preferred the more ‘corporate’ colours of the early 90’s. They reflected prestige and definately “flew the flag” as did their other 70’s/80’s colours. That’s why they did’nt paint all those awful designs on Concorde… Can you imagine Concorde’s tail painted with tartan or one of those awful ‘ethnic’ designs? I think and hope not! Not that there is anything wrong with the designs and images of other cultures, it’s just that there is a place for them and on the tail of one of the worlds best airlines is’nt one of them. It’s about time that people started flying our flag again because I don’t care what people say: Our flag reflects quality and value for money! The new tails that they are bringing out now (as per Concorde) are better but make the airline look a bit ‘charter’ if you know what I mean.

    RE: first class seats

Well I’ve done Raffles class with SQ and that was cool, although economy class syndrome can be alleviated simply by getting up once and hour or simply moving your feet round in circles to promote circulation and stop embolisms forming. Easy peasy!!!!

LAST EDITED ON 25-Jan-01 AT 07:35 PM (GMT)[p]…Oh yeah and another thing, I would RECCOMMEND stopping over somewhere, it does’nt usually cost anything extra on the ticket and the airline can usually sort you with cheap accomodation as part of the deal. I did the full monty via Singapore without a stop, and 36 hours doorstep to doorstep Wigan – Melbourne isn’t too great I can tell you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    RE: flights to Australia

LAST EDITED ON 25-Jan-01 AT 07:34 PM (GMT)[p]Whatever you do, DON’T go with Garuda. You will be liable to about four stops and Garuda frequently make drastic schedule changes at the last minuite which result in lengthy 1, 2 or 3 night stops in god knows where. They are cheap, but I would not reccomend it. I used to work in travel you see, so I know that this is true. I would reccommend Singapore airlines as I have been to Melbourne with them, but I would especially recommend Emirates. If you buy in advance they are cheap and are a good airline. For stopover though, you could consider a BA/QF codeshare fare with which you could combine an outward flight via the US and a return via Asia. This is not as pricey as you think. If you want further advice, I would recommend contacting my former employers whom you can reach at http://www.airnet.co.uk. Also, contrary to what people might say, don’t book at the last minuite as it will cost you MORE money as the scheduled airlines only have limited seats at their low consolidated prices. ‘Cancellations’ don’t exist with these airlines as any seats cancelled at the last minute will be upsold to one of their published fares. Anyone who says different is talking b######s!!!!!!!!!!! Paul.

    RE: Barkes!!!

Well Kabir, the ammount/size of airbrakes depend upon the size of the aircraft as much as any thing. The airbrake basically disrupts the airflow over the normally smooth wing which causes drag which slows down the aircraft. I suppose on a 747 wing you need to have a number of airbrakes for practical and operational reasons (i.e: one big airbrake might need a large hydraulic actuator but several would need smaller, less bulky ones) An aircraft is all about balance and using many flap/airbrake combinations on the 747 may be beneficial as opposed just having one or two settings on a smaller aircraft. The turboprop aircraft that you mentioned can slow down by reversing the pitch of the propeller blades to slow down. As a turboprop engine operates at constantly the same speed and that most of the power comes from altering the pitch of the blades, this provides(on the ground!) a very effective brake (rather like reverse thrust). The only time that conventional airbrakes are used on turboprops are in the air when using full reverse pitch would be dangerous. They are of course used on the ground as well but in conjunction with pitch reversal. In case you are wondering also, the full reverse pitch on most types cannot be reversed in the air as a microswitch in the undecarriage bays only completes the reverse pitch circuit when the aircraft is resting firmly on the ground.

…At Manchester you used to be able to get right to the end of the T1 terminal piers but they stopped that years ago due to possible terrorist/FOD throwing bufoon activity. It is still quite good at Manchester for observation though. I don’t know how it’s going to work with the new runway however as they are going to use one for taking off and one for landing. If they use the new one for taking off it will cause considerable problems as there is no way to get close to the new runway area for observation purposes. If you need anymore information Keltic, please e-mail me and I’ll send you some maps of wher to go e.t.c.

P.S: Like LHR (don’t know about the others) you can get the train direct to Manchester Airport too, so it’s really accessible….

At Manchester, you can go to the Airport Hotel on Ringway road. This is right at the end of the runway (about 25 yards) although photography is hampered by the fencing. You could also go to the other end which is signposted when you come to the roundabout near the terminals. Follow the signs which route you towards a pub called the ‘Romper’. You will go on a road around the back of the cargo centre and there it is. I would suggest though that the best place for photography now, is the top of the old T1 car park. I think that they have changed the terminal numbers round but it’s the one where you go up the big ramp next to the Hilton Hotel. Hope this has been of help mate.
