    Just one or two pics…

What a shame that the weather was so bad… my camera ended up getting so wet that I had to take some of these with a fogged viewfinder and have run some of them them through Photoshop to make them vaguely presentable, hence the noise on the pic! The others, I have not had time to do anything with yet…. I lasted until the Lightning went but was too wet to continue after that!

Well, it looks like a UK police car and haulage firm. They are on ‘our’ side of the road and the index plates look like ours as well!

Well, when I was home last year I rode there from Wigan on my bike and spoke to the jobsworth on the gate at ‘A’ site to see if I could go around and take some photos. He said no and gave me some pony about having to write to English partnerships for permission. If I were you, I would go down the road by the old perminter fence, bypass the gate and follow the road around to what seems like a dead end. Over where the road is blocked you can climb over and get access to ‘E’ site without any hassles. If anyone hassles you, just leave the site. They might try and say they can do you for trespass but they can’t. As long as you don’t steal or break anything, they can’t do anything to you but ask you to leave the site. I think the murals are in the blister hangers but they are always locked and there is no way to get access to them. When we were younger we walked right up onto the roof of one of the hangers to have a look (it’s solid concrete!) and promptly got asked to leave by the security who saw our photo flashes!

There is an air raid shelter near there also. That is the part of the airbase where a lot of the B17’s e.t.c were cut up… I bet there is allsorts undeneath the surface!

The other hangars are now owned by ‘English Partnerships’ and their plans for the site indeed do not incorporate the hangars. There is a fight to get the ones on E site (the blister type ones) listed but Warrington Council can only see £££££££££ it appears, which is typical of any northern council to be honest. All corrupt and just after the cash.

I flew over there a few years ago in Cessna 150 and it is amazing how clear the outlines of the runways and hangers are south of the motorway. There are also wartime murals in some of the hangars apparently.

I can assure you that it is still there. I drive past it almost every week!

I think they are saving it as they have built all around it and have left it alone.

I can assure you that my story is the real one as I was the person who was dealing with the end part of incident in the Police control room!

I came on duty to be told about this “V1”, finding out about an hour after I started my shift that it was an immersion heater! There really is nothing more to it, I can assure you!

It was’nt a V1. I am a Police officer and work in the communications site that covers this area and was on duty on this particular day. When the EOD people got there, it turned out in fact to be an immersion heater! :p They were’nt very impressed apparently.

Poor, sensational reporting on the part of the BBC again!

Good pics! I will put mine up in a bit! Did you feel that heat flash from that explosion during the RAF demo? It was well hot!

Yeah, I was there! It rained on and off with patches of brilliant sunshine and then really demoralising torrential rain! When the sun came out, I remember steam coming off people! If I remember rightly, there was a Shackleton in the display and also a Vanguard frieghter which did a flypast and a landing at the end of the day! The Vulcan did a few flights that day, going to other shows and using Woodford as a base so we were treated to numerous take offs and flypasts. Also at Woodford at that time was a Comet Fuselage (now at Warton?) and the remains of a Victor (fuselage section and air intake) in the fire training section near to XM603 which was surrounded by signs purporting a radiation hazard! 😮

I remember one of the Xm603 guys telling me that HE was going to taxi her at the next years airshow only to be told the same thing the next year and then the year after….. What a shame they could’nt do it eh?

I alo recall a Sea King doing a display in the torrential rain and hardly a single person (apart from me) standing in the rain looking as they ran to get shelter!

For me, that ws one of the best ever Woodford shows despite the rain. They had some really rare stuff that year. Is that the year that they had the Russian ‘Albatross’ jet floatplane? That was class. The SU27 pair were always really good too. Also 92′ or 93′, they had the Patrouille Suisse with thei hunters. Class. I have tons of pics of most of the 1990’s shows which need to be scanned in but all my pics are in the attic in Wigan at my parents house so they will have to wait to I get round to it!

Just my opinion but having read these books, they appear to be quite badly researched with various stories based mainly on third party heresay and the conclusions in some cases, pure speculation on the part of the author without any further investigation on what ‘it’ might have been ever taking place, the implication often being that this is totally unneccesary: CASE CLOSED!

Perhaps I’m missing the point but I always prefer books about the paranormal (or anything for that matter) to go into far more detail and not be along the lines of:

‘I was told by a close friend that her old friend, WRAF officer ***** was alone in the control tower one day in the early 1980’s at Scampton and fleetingly saw a black dog out of the corner of her eye on the harstanding’

Then, usually a lot of regurgitated waffle and the assertion that there were definately no dogs on the base at that time (or similar assertion depending on the story) and then the conclusion (again to be altered to suit the story) along the lines of:

‘It must be Guy Gibsons dog as it was two weeks short of the anniversary of the dams raid, quite close to the anniversary of Guy Gibsons death and is believed to be around the anniversary of the time that the dog also died’

I’m not suggesting the stories proffered by Mr Barrymore-Halfpenny and his witnesses are’nt true or are simply made up, I’m stating that I just find it annoying that there is a lot of scope for a cracking set of well researched books here which appears to have been wasted. If I had the time, I would love to have a go myself but alas, don’t have any time to spare for the forseeable future due to work commitments e.t.c.

I was there in 1984! It was cvalled the Barton ‘ITT’ Airshow. Dunno who ‘ITT’ are though! I remember seeing the JU52 and a Hurricane doing a mock attack on it. There is a picture of me stood under the wing somewhere. Also that year a Tornado GR1 had to divert to Manchester airport with a major hydraulic problem.

I remember going into the cockpit section of a Vulcan which you entered from the side (was it cosfords example (B1)?) and then the real thing came and did an awesome display! It was’nt camouflaged underneath so does anyone know which Vulcan this was?

Re canopy clouding. When I first went to duxford in the early 90’s, you could see inside the F111 pod no problem and when I went a few weeks ago, it was all clouded over. Some kind of chemical/UV reaction perhaps?

I usually just prefer to browse here these days and prefer not to voice my opinion as a rule but that is OUTRAGEOUS!
