And some people seem to forget that a certain Mr Darryl Greenamyer managed a blistering 988mph, or about 1600km/h in an F-104 in the extremely dense air at sea level. (or rather, 60ft altitude);)
A record which still stands today.
He’d actually gone faster on an earlier effort, but one of the timimg cameras malfuntioned, making the higher speed of 1010mph not valid.
As mentioned by others, the F-104 set world speed records over mach 2, and was considered the first operational fighter capable of mach 2.
Which makes certain peoples claims that “it wasn’t fast” or “wasn’t capable of mach 2” a little disconcerting.;)
There is some physics involved here..a 6½ metric tonne machine ( empty ) just cannot go mach 2 with 733 kg/m2 wingloading with 69 kN force.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockheed_F-104_Starfighter
Mig-21 was 5 tonnes empty with similar powered engine and had mach 2.23 top speed had only 384 kg/m2 wingloading.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mikoyan-Gurevich_MiG-21
Mirage III is pretty close to Mig-21 with 393 kg/m2 wingloading.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dassault_Mirage_III
Remarkably went mach 2.2 with just 60.8 kN force ( less interference drag due to delta wing ).

Popular Mechanics hit again INSERT from wiki ( F-104 ); But surprisingly, artists working for various magazines came up with drawings very close to the actual design. A drawing in the Popular Mechanics, August 1954 edition was very close to the actual design.[6]
During intercepts it did but your are correct when range endurance is an issue.
Maybe some are surprised but the F-104 still surpasses a F-16 high up and above Mach 1. A 750 kt limit was kept in peace-time to prevent stress and damage from heating.
That is the top speed of F-100.

30-40 km ?

Okay but in level flight at any altitude in “warmode” it went nowhere near mach 2.
Okay weapons and wing tanks stripped in a dive and then straight mach 2.1 !
How did they get to 31 KM…using rockets to boost ?
It was extremely fast for it’s time.
It was the first mach 2 fighter in service.
It did not go mach 2.

…and Mirage III Mach 2.2; http://www.globalaircraft.org/planes/dassault_mirage_iii.pl
As Levsha has pointed out, it wasn’t designed to be a dogfighter.
Korea saw pilots ask for more speed and a better climb rate.
This the F-104 provided.
It would have been used in slash and dash attacks, trading altitude for speed, and speed for altitude, and repeat.
It’s design points entirely toward that.
Time and hindsight has shown the Mirage III to be a better all round, balanced design, but the F-104 was designed to a set goal.
It was faster than F100..but not extremely fast.
Not without 578 kN from RATO;

It is the smallest ac to go with 650 kN force right ?
😎
F-104 has fully laden 733 kg/m2 wingloading.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockheed_F-104_Starfighter
How could that possibly go into dogfight ?
the term “buffeting” is ill-chosen in tht case. More sensitive to wind gust is what they shld hve say.
As wing area increase, variation of total lift is less damped by the weight of the airplane. Also, bigger wing means increased wet surface that means more time to regain the speed lost in wind gust.
Hence, basically your plane oscillate more in the vertical and horizontal plans as the wing is bigger for a given thrust and weight.
Okay…i figured something wasn’t right in that comment.
I think F-104 was not invented to do dogfight like this; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFO-jQ1Iutk

You can now place the VR in there with 15.3 kN engine and 27.3 kN ( with rockets ). Just remember this is 3500 kg Mtow kite.
LAST UPDATE !?
I think I am done with this now.
Latest update is 2.3 times bigger engine and leavin out 2 outa 4 MBDA MICA missiles from concealed bays.
So this diminutive fighter with 2 x 6 kN rocket boosters could have power to weight ratio of 1.62 and average with just turbofan of 0.62.
Ceiling could be as high as 40 km. Can you imagine..1.8 times more punch than D-21 at 11 km higher !!?
—
Edit: correction….the engine is 15.1 kN..still double sized to previous ( power to weight drops to 0.5 ).
