G-SRII looks like an aircraft, not suggesting this was the victim.

Indeed that has enuf rudder to cope with a strong sidewind at landing.

    Sad news. πŸ™
Its worth remembering some microlights do look like aeroplanes.

From top of your head ..can you name any ?

Sorry just found out that the aircraft i posted was a one off. So try this in stead.

The amount of welding must have been the cause of most of the global warming.

    hahah…sure john..

How about thinking it otherway round….family flying/living this would never build a permanent house anywhere…with the amount one takes mortage for a house you can easily build one of those…and always ( as long as the tbo allows not very often ) fly south for winters ( no heating costs ).

    Boyle,

Of course not, but that is not the point…with a Hummer you can go hardly 20 mpg. In fact you get 16 mpg ( http://www.fueleconomy.gov/Feg/noframes/22514.shtml ).

This is certainly not same reason as why the Piper has problems. It is the recession. But fact is that fuel economy has to get a lot better soon in order to cut down emissions and greenhouse gasses.

My ” papertiger ” ac in my blog gets mileage of 490 after 16 months of study ( not yet verifid by aeroengineers ).

Here is another more serious attempt to go mach 1.0 with a piston AC:

By Eric Ahlstrom who was also designing the last Steve Fossett carproject.

    Ahem…

Does that mean that the jets provided some of the power, or was it flown solely on the turboprop?

If the latter, fair enough. If the former….

    Here is the world second fastest single engine prop plane F-84H Thunderscreech;

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XF-84H

I must point out that cleaniness and supersonic prop alone won’t make a plane go fast…it is the power to weight ratio. F-84H has worse power to weight ratio than a standard P-51H ( 487 mph mover ).

My fantasy racer has over 1.5 hp/kilo power to weight ratio ( 3 x F-84H ) and cleaniness number of wetted area drag ( 0.0015 ) is 1/3 of the Mustang one ( 0.0040 ).

Problem in going supersonic with a prop plane is that prop has to be well beyond mach 1.0 and the noise is awful…even devastating.

Here is more of xf-88b going supersonic ( F-88 was not supersonic ).

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XF-88_Voodoo

The speed of sound varies roughly from 767 mph ( sea level ) to 660 mph ( 20 000 ft ).

    Not correct DazDaMan !

John Fitzpatrick went supersonic with a prop plane already in 1953:

    http://www.aviastar.org/air/usa/mcdonnell_xf-88b.php

    John’s e-mail; jmfitzp(@)aol.com ( if you doubt it ).

Enclosed Sleek Streak II ( above ) is 3 x cleaner than a Mustang.

Wanna go supersonic with a piston ac ?

I let myself to play a while with this drag aspect and in prone position flown ac I was able to find a plane with .245 sq ft of FPEA drag. With 2 DYNA CAM engines of 200 hp each ( 29 kg ) the plane should reach the speed of 710 mph ( this should be super sonic ? ). It would be slightly slicker than the enclosed 300 mph mover.

This is just a teaser really..I don’t see very good changes of bailing out from this etc. Just a pure concept to see how low in drag we can go with a manned aerodyne and 2 piston engines. Flying time with 20% nitrous ( if we wanna go 800 mph ) and methanol could be just a few minutes at full throttle. Engine could seize also after few seconds of running time.

This is not the plane I am seriously developing….it is the Max III. 😎

The Gypsy-looking cowls, cowl inlets, and prop rotation are what got me. Then I found, as you did, that the configuration matched the specs for the British Aircraft BA IV.

    Here’s a pointer to a picture:

    http://1000aircraftphotos.com/Contributions/DeRoeckJoris/4806.htm

Looks like our mystery ship might just have different cockpit glazings.

Why was it unsuccessful ( in the text ) ?
