It seems to have had 21 % thick wing ( lenght /chord ).
It is very interesting. What was it made of ?
Hi Topspeed
IIRC the Welkin was initially designed by Westland as a high altitude fighter, possibly it was designed even more specifically as a high altitude night fighter. I think it was intended to have superseded the DeH Mosquito in that(those) role(s).
So, it may possibly have gone on to become the most capable WWII high altitude/high altitude night fighter, but I doubt it would ever have been the most capable “all round” fighter as I doubt it would have been as fast and/or manouverable as some of the later single-engined fighters that appeared in WWII.
I seem to remember the high-altitude fighter requirement faded away before Westland got the Welkin up to the state where series manufacture could start, and in the end it never went into full scale production – but I may well be wrong.
There is some data around, I know Harald Penrose describes flying and crash landing (IIRC) one of the prototype Welkins in one of his book “Adventure with Fate” (well worth a read as it covers pre-war British aviation, and Westlands, who remain (IMHO) one of the lesser known, but very innovative, British aircraft designer and manufacturers of the period).
I suspect there will be others here on the forum who have more detailled knowledge of the Welkin if you want it.

Yes definitely interested !
I think I may have exaggerated:

Service ceiling is 13 420 meters.
Was the wing foil too limited ?
Yeah, I did mean that one!
Thanks, Michael!
Yellow 20 pilot is unknown.
The photo is remastered in colour.

The unit was part of the Detachment Kuhlmey which participated in large battles of summer 1944, during the Finnish-Soviet Continuation War. When the Soviet Red Army launched its fourth strategic offensive on the 9th of June 1944
C. G. E. Mannerheim asked Germany for help. Among the help that arrived was a Luftwaffe unit that arrived to Finland on the 12th of June. The aircraft landed at the Immola Airfield on the 17th of June. The unit used the whole airfield from there on. They flew some 2,700 missions against the enemy and dropped 770 tonnes of bombs on the enemy. It destroyed over 150 Soviet aircraft, about 200 tanks, dozens of bridges and transport vessels. 23 of the pilots died and 24 were wounded in battle. The unit lost 41 of its aircraft to all reasons.
The detachment consisted of some 70 airworthy aircraft to support the 200 strong Finnish force, but its operational strength varied due to losses, additions and troop movements. The unclear structure is partly explained by the Luftwaffe replacement programs, where obsolete Junkers Ju 87 “Stuka” dive bombers were replaced by Focke-Wulf Fw 190 jabo’s (fighter-bombers).

I think wood is good for a wind turbine….so ?
Don’t forget those lovely HP 42`s Universal Freighters, for which production should Not be restarted either !
I’d like to see this reborn as solar electric ac…with refined aerodynamics and lite weight laminates as material.
Top speed at 200-250 mph and travelling with dames like Holly Goodhead, Felicity Shagwell and Ivana Humpalot the journey from London to Perth could be a very pleasant one with 3-4 overnightings in different exotic orient cities.

…I heard the same over the local news that the FDR was found but was in bad shape & with critical items missing. Are we talking here about the ‘memory chips” ?? were there any photos/link of this release in Europe?? BTW the movement of every knob, toggle switch is recorded into these memory chips depending on the a/c model & updates made to it. Going back to my notes on AF 447!!

This sounds a bit like the FEDEX flight where the ex-worker tried a suicide to get insurance money.
The impact speed ( 400 kts ) indicates ( to me ) that the co-pilot flying the Germanwings A320 tried to disintegrate the plane so badly that it would be impossible to gain data from the flight data recorder ( FDR ). CVR working /operative made this futile.
Detachment Kuhlmey operated from Estonia but moved to Finland to counter the soviet massive attack in 1944.
This is from the same group; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bzoEs2VtVYI

You have to see this finnish military photo too.

Thats his opinion and it may not be way off either. In order to get the size down you have to first define a lot of things as you well know. That stage is years away but I am sure the teams working for different manufacterers have a fairly good idea.
Okay…well it needs Russia to join NATO to get AF planes smaller right ?
Some nations just have to buy 1/10 of the amount they used to have.
its going to be a fighter the size of Flanker
Do you know it for sure ?
Where is the FDR situated in a A320 ?
How hard can it be to search and find it ?
Horrifying news. I hope they figure out what happened. RIP !
I does look a lot like a Handley Page Hastings transport aircraft of the Royal Air Force !
