Well, looks like your father used the story to gain few extra chemistry points because there are no military pilot defections recorded for this time period.

    Hi

Thanks, would you be able to point me to an archive where I could research that? Maybe if I add or leave out some things, I may find something.

    Many thanks
    Chris

    Thank you

    Hello and thanks for replying

Is your mother quite certain he was Russian? I know the DDR ran an intelligence operation which targeted single females who worked in official jobs. Essentially they’d send a handsome man in to seduce a woman and use them to access secret documents.

I think he must have been of “eastern european” / slavic origin as he clearly did not speak German well / natively as he would have if he was DDR. I have a police report quoting my biological mother and several friends saying that he was not of German and probably of Slavic mother tounge.

It’s well possible that in that time, for a girl in the backyard of Lucerne which hadn’t left her town much before in her life, “Russian” was a word for all things Eastern European.

One thing about that list of defections on Wikipedia is that it seems to concern only military personnel. It’s possible this man could have been a civilian pilot?

I dont think so, the story clearly was that one of a military test pilot.

From anything I have read – Austria was a hotbed of espionage during the Cold War, if he was a person of interest to American authorities, it would be possible that they would prefer to debrief him/glean information in a neutral setting such as Switzerland.

I wonder how to get more information about this ?

    Regards
    Chris
