Nowadays we are seeing a similar concept, light attack/advanced training aircraft which are also expensive but far more capable than these aircraft such as the KAI T-50, the Alenia Aermacchi M-346, Hongdu L-15 and Yak-130, will thse aircraft fall into the same mistakes these earlier aircraft fell into?

If done correctly, these newer aircraft could be a viable option for a small multi-role fighter for countries that are looking for a new aircraft but could not afford the price of a full blown modern fighter, although the argument could then be made for an upgraded second hand fighter such as an F16 or M2000.

Isn’t Argentina on board as well?

Yes they are, as of now, they’re down for 6 of them.

actually the Koraens chose the KFX-101 design which is conventional lay out…

Looks quite a bit like the F-35.

I would imagine that Japan will now be fully funding their ATD-X.

Interesting, some of the newest pics make the aircraft look a bit like the Swedish Draken but with canards.

I think both Mig 1.44 and J-20 designs are very identical. Last picture of J-20 seems like an updated stealthized version of the Mig 1.44!

I agree, you can definitely see the influence. Who knows if MiG was helping in this project. They may have not won the PAK-FA contest but maybe they were involved with this project.

BTW-I question these so called “experts” that said China was at least a decade away from such an aircraft. I won’t be surprised if we next see a T-95 type tank coming out of China!

But here are some actual “official” drawings of the JXX / J-20 by Chengdu 611 Design Institute – or should I say what has been released thus far:confused:

If it stays like this it does look promising.

Too bad some of the S. American countries can’t pool their resources and build their own advanced light fighter or join the S. Korean KF-X program with Indonesia and now Turkey expressing interest. Something to replace the Mirages, Kfirs, AMXs, F-5’s and Skyhawks that are still in use in the region.

Maybe they were testing how easily these modules could be converted, if not, this exercise didn’t add much value. I would imagine in an actual scenario where several LCS are involved, the different modules would be carried by at least one LCS in the group so that the combined LCS’s would provide protection from all the scenarios the LCS capabilities are meant for (surface protection, anti-sub, mine warfare, etc.)

Check out this other forum for Boeing’s proposal of a 6th gen fighter (it will be both manned and unmanned):

The future is upon us. Funny how after seeing all the sci-fi films, they mention that the laser will actually be invisible…so no cool red or green beam flying towards the target. :p

Useful to support special forces troops and possibly limited defensive capabilities.

I remember seeing a Swedish concept for a small modular mini-sub that could be reconfigured for different missions such as patrol, mine laying or for supporting special ops. Not sure if it was ever developed.

Redevelop the single seat Pucara Charlie with advanced avionics, new engines and greater weapon layout for COIN missions.

As some have hinted, if the biggest concern is N. Korea and their air force and weaponry, I think even the F/A-50 would do a good job for both air-to-air and ground attack missions.

On the other hand, if S. Korea is looking at this to get the technological know-how to develop these new generation aircraft, then that’s a different matter and they may be playing the new heightened aggression card with their northern neighbor in a bid to pour funding into this project.

How modular is the FM400 design?
