Maybe I missed it but did SAAB do any kind of redesign to enhance the stealthiness of the Gripen? I have seen some pictures a while back of a proposed redesigned Gripen (I think they were calling it Gripen G/H) that had more trapazoidal wings and a reshaped nose. I know the Gripen-N doesn’t go that far but did they make any new stealth redesigns on it?

I think the FAB should focus on getting an excellent fifth generation fighter in a decade or so, either Typhoon or Rafale.

Actually Gripen, Typhoon, Rafale…etc. are all considered 4th gen fighters. I think the only 5th gen fighters to date are the F-35 and F-22.

It would be nice if a bunch of South American countries pooled their resources to buy one common new fighter…maybe have Argentina, Brazil, Chile (and others) along with India and Russia all develop a new lighter 5th gen fighter. Another nice option would be for these South American countries to develop their own light fighter together.

The diplomatic and economic situation is improving, but I still think both of those options are still a dream….although it would be nice. If these countries purchase new equipment, it may be more costly upfront but in the long term, they will not need a new fighter for at least 20-30 years. So it could be a long term investment.

There was a brief article I read in a website that was quoting an Argentine A/F general saying that Argentina would most likely never buy the F-16 because it is too fragile…basically that it needs to have a perfectly maintained airfield/runway because any small debris will affect the engine.

I know Russian jets are specifically made with that in mind, maybe this will boost the chances of obtaining a Russian fighter? Now that Russia is offering a smaller 5th gen fighter to India, it could become a tempting offer. The MiG 1.27?

How do other European fighters fare in that respect, the Mirage 2000/Rafale? Do they also need a perfectly maintained runway?

    How about the Chinese aircraft?

Maybe the Gripen can also be a possibility? I know that the Gripen can take-off from highways/roads, so it may offer the same resistance as Russian fighters. A nice stealthy Gripen would make a great aircraft.

The smartest move would be to have a little chat with ze germans, especially since Kockums is a part of german GSC.

Maybe Sweden will opt for the U212 or U214 (or a derivative of those designs).

Info on US Compact Kinetic Energy Missile (CKEM) here http://www.missilesandfirecontrol.com/our_products/antiarmor/CKEM/product-CKEM.html

I wonder if the CKEM can be used as a SAM/Anti-Tank missile, like the ADATS? It has a range of 8km (also saw it as high as 10km) so it could be a good SHORAD/Anti-tank combo. Possibly also use it as a SHORAD/Anti-missile system in naval ships.

[QUOTE=wd1]the FLIR/CCD/laser sensor complex on the RAFAEL Typhoon, or for that matter the optronic/radar firecontrol systems used by most naval 76mm guns simply does not provide the sensitivity, tracking, ranging and high-speed processing capability needed to deal with modern ASMs. they were designed to shoot at boats and planes not missiles.QUOTE]

This shows the benefit of such systems as the RAMS and SADRAL, fire-and-forget. As long as you know where the missile is coming from, you can fire these missiles at the target without needing the complex target tracking.

We have great plans for FIDAE 06… Lets see if we can get hold of an airline advertiser…

You know, one of the best ways to learn about new military equipment is by users like yourself who go to these expositions and provide pcitures of the new material that you saw there.

I look forward to seeing your material!!

    Cheers

    [QUOTE=wd1]

in any case locally-licensed versions of the RAFAEL Typhoon 25mm Gun System (http://www.israeli-weapons.com/weapons/naval/typhoon/Typhoon.html) will be installed on the Formidables in two positions on the port and starboard corners of the helicopter hangar. these are mainly for engaging small boats (bomb-laden terrorists ala USS Cole) but provide an elementary level of antimissile CIWS as well.
    QUOTE]

You know, combining one of these systems with some air-burst ammunition (like the AHEAD rounds) could make these fairly effective as a last ditch CIWS. Not sure if they’ve gotten these ABM rounds down to 25mm but I believe they have made them in 30mm calibre, so 25mm may not be far behind.

Also, don’t forget that the Oto Melara 76mm system can fire the new DAVIDE guided round which turns it into a very effective CIWS.

[QUOTE=sealordlawrence]Just found the below link from the singapore ministry of defence with two great pictures of their new frigate.

    http://www.mindef.gov.sg/imindef/news_and_events/nr/2005/aug/05aug05_nr.html

    QUOTE]

Nice looking boat. It does have a similarity to the Gowind designs, which makes sense since it is from the same firm.

Is that a stealthy 76mm Oto Melara turret?
