Where the tailband has been painted out only leaves 646 showing. On the other side you’d expect to find the rest of the code, but they’ve just mirrored it with only 646 showing.

A quick look through ‘the bible’ shows only about 3 mark IXs ending in 646.

    Mark12,

When you say “It is quite a revelation”, you seem to be refering to the serial of one of the Spitfires involved. It must be known which Spitfires they could potentially be.

I’m sure if you know what it is, you can’t say until the book is released, but here’s a few possibilities:

    1. It’s a Spitfire with history, maybe flown by an ace.
    2. It’s a Spitfire that shouldn’t have been in that part of the world
    3. It’s a mark V with a mark IX engine added

I shall be looking forward to the book’s release

Just thrown it in the old video.

It’s colour footage through the clouds of a camouflaged mark 22/24. The log barrelled twin machine guns might tell someone with more knowledge than me exactly which mark.

SPITFIRE – FLYING LEGEND has a picture of them together, but sure I’ve seen pictures somewhere else.

Could this footage be the reason they changed the codes of AR501 from NN-D to NN-A?

Am I right in thinking that the DB Spitfire has french roundels, looks to be the opposite colours to the others.
