    The justification used for closing the thread is also justification for closing the entire military section of this forum, so be careful what you wish for. Sure, classified information could be posted here, but first it would require someone with that information to break opsec by posting it. The thread therefore is not the problem, but rather those cleared personal being incapable of not posting such information. Others could also post such information in the Eurofighter thread about Eurofighter for example, so clearly in the interests of national security lets close the forum…

    Interesting to read that WE.177’s were taken down to the Falklands as part of the task force, BUT they never crossed into any of the islands territorial waters or into specific nuclear free zones….I wonder if the Vulcan would have been used to deliver one…..

    The bombs are different. The ones in the Falklands were tactical depth charges, the ones the Vulcan carried were strategic bombs. The Vulcan could easily have done a raid on Argentina like Black Buck, but would need far less of a logistics trail as the WE.177 is much lighter than a whole bomb bay full of conventional munitions.

    I don’t have a favourite Beatles song. I never listen to them. Some of these are quite good though…

    I would think the most logical stop gap would be uprated Goshawks, of course, built in the UK. Armed with ASRAAMs would definitely fit “stop gap” role well and be far cheaper than getting Shornets. They could also be useful in the future for continued training and rotation, and would be a type that would have some limited permanent role (training).

    Of course unlikely but the UK could look at the JF-17. According to the latest rumour (Pervez Shamim) they have been navalized for use in the PLAN aircraft carrier. Likely to see pics and info coming this way in a year or so (if the rumour is right).

    It’s quite possible, but I think the Iranian offering to Britain has more capabilities since it can do STOVL…

    I doubt the Chinese hackers would be able to access anything properly secure… that said if they have weak security procedures and let workers make data easier to access then obviously hacking is possible.

    @Phaid

    The Chinese hackers are more interested in commercial technology for their economic growth than military tech.

    Meanwhile across the channel the French are laughing their asses off.

    The French have nothing to laugh about right now, and between Britain and France right now, it’s the British who have the most to be happy about, not the French.

    Or from another PoV, a few interim-bought F-18E will later serve as refuelers (and perhaps stand off jammers) until the end of their life, so not so bad as it looks on a first glance.

    A bit expensive having small numbers of F18E/EA-18G and F35 in terms of all the training, maintenance personnel, parts etc!

    US carriers are perfectly sinkable, it’s reaching the carrier to sink it that’s the problem…

    What’s politically acceptable, first and foremost, is a carrier with naval planes on the deck. If the British choose the Rafale to populate their carrier then the French may do something to ease the deal but they don’t have to. They owe the British nothing, especially since the EFA era.

    The French don’t have to, and the British don’t have to buy the Rafale. Actually, they’ll probably still go with the SH because of occupied France’s recent actions in the EUSSR 😉

    I guess if you drive a car with illegally tinted windows, an illegal number plate, neglect to wear a seatbelt and then drive for seventeen miles oblivious of the police cars behind you with blues and twos on who are flashing you to pull over you might expect a little more than a friendly

    “Good evening sir. Is this your car?”

    Moggy

    He wasn’t attempting to escape, so a friendly greeting is appropriate. Taking a long time to stop does not justify violence or criminal damage. Excessive actions like these do real damage to the police image.

    If you look closely you’ll see, quite clearly, that the bloke’s a prick and deserves a good hiding. It’s a Range Rover, not a Hedgehog.

    I didn’t realise the severity of the beatings issued was related to the size of the vehicle driven. Certainly not good news for a HGV driver without a seatbelt on is it? As for hedgehogs, they are carrying hundreds of offensive weapons.

    but at the same time go overboard on easy targets

    they fall over themselves to give a ticket to a pensioner for not wearing a seat belt !! what’s the worst that can happen ?? kill himself ?? big deal he probably only has ten years left anyway !!

    yet they weren’t over keen on interveening to stop rioting

    I do hope you’ve seen the latest episode of “Motorway Cops”! Skip to the end and you’ll see a summary of what happened, lots of prosecutions for traffic offences, oh and…

    “the Crown Prosecution Service offered no evidence against the men who were caught with a car boot containing 10kg of class A drugs”

    @Bob
    The ASP is for hitting people. Fitting a window breaker end cap could encourage officers to use the end cap as a weapon. The ACPO have obviously decided that this would be a bad idea.

    @Lincoln 7
    Unbelievable! Seeing a video like that would not encourage me to sign up as a police officer, quite the opposite.
