you guys are way wrong on this one.

“No One Come Close” Is actually a recruiting slogan USAF used and I believe is still using.

The Eurofighter is “nothing comes close”, which is not the same as “no one comes close”.

The caption’s flawed anyhow — it was the Eurofighter which famously used the slogan “nothing comes close” :p

I’m sure the USAF isn’t worried, with J-20 being downed F-117 technology and all ^^

Indeed, they don’t just copy aircraft, they copy slogans!!!

could a version be built to serve as a AEW&C or is it too small?

You need to factor in the cost of integrating this new system, and how it compares to just buying off the shelf an existing AWACS that uses a bigger, more capable, more expensive platform.

This is why im all in favour of at least a 2 type fleet (eg Tiffy F35) so 1 technical problem doesnt ground youre entire airforce.

The air force is never “grounded” in that sense, it’s just unnecessary missions that are cancelled. QRA aircraft stay on alert!

That’s true. In fact, the idea of EU sold to the populations before 2000 was about a federalist union of the “people” with common european dream and values. If this doesn’t happen (which till now it hasn’t), the EU won’t go much further. Or at least, it won’t be the big geopolitical power that Kohl and Mitterand had envisioned. History isn’t waiting for anyone and dislikes voids of power. The rising “stars” of the East now seem good as markets and consumers, but in the long run, they will become competitors in every sector and if the EU isn’t ready, the center of gravity will shift towards Peking in the future.

The EU is having childhood diseases. It will either learn to treat them or throw the baby off the window.

They should make the EU a free trade block, drop the rest of the junk and not let it grow out of control again like it has now.

Why the hell don’t we just abolish the armed forces altogther, and be done with it? Use part of the money saved to recruit a team of negotiators (multi-ethnic, multi-faith of course) to try and reach an amicable agreement with terrorists and any future aggressors. 😡 (Sorry, rant over)

Because the MoD provides a way to employ 80,000 useless jobsworths in the Civil Service obviously 😀

    Joke really.
    Cut monies from eleswhere.
Aus did great with Largs Bay

Not as great as the EU does from us every year.

When I was at school we were taught that the main ethos that lies behind the EU is the interdependency of nations; a system where we help each other when things go wrong to avoid ending up in the situation that caused the two worst conflicts in human history. As this has been the most peaceful half century in European history I would say the basic idea of that is working.

Personally I would sooner live in a country that helps others out, rather than one that spends that same money on munitions. Am I the only one?

Really? Well charity should be optional, not compulsory. Since you’re in Manchester, just remind yourself of what you said when you’re sat in a queue on the M6 because its carrying twice as many cars as it was designed for, and there isn’t any money to widen it. Just sayin 😀

Ppp, I agree people should bark more about these things, but make sure you’re barking up the right tree!

The cost of building the CVF is mainly set by industry (private contractors, BAE). Same goes for the M6. http://www.m6toll.co.uk/about/project.asp?mainmenuid=11

(Not that one shouldn’t bark up the government tree as well. I work in telecom and I think the services got much, much better after the sector got privatized. Unfortunately, the same can not be said for electricity suppliers in western europe, in general.)

Oh I don’t mean the M6 toll, thats a new private road. I mean widening of the M6 proper, the widening would cost £1000 per inch of road, an unbelievable figure. Indeed, in all cases the work is carried out by private contractors, but the government has a big part to play in why it is all so incredibly expensive. There is too much time and money spent on analysis and evaluations for a start. Sure in theory these improve the process but in reality they just slow it down, waste money and the project still ends up troubled! The government keeps changing requirements and procurement numbers, procurement should be part of a 30 year plan so contractors can plan accordingly and result in the minimum cost to the taxpayer. Of course I don’t expect anything to change 🙂

How long are the British people going to put up with this farce befor they demand an actual workable defence plan?!

When are the British people going to demand the government take sensible decisions? We wish! Those that are responsible always seem to get away with it. There are so many areas that need improvement its unreal! A big barrier for one is how costs just seem to become breathtaking, such as the £1000 per inch of width of motorway to widen the M6… WTF! Bureaucracy, safe government jobs, excessive regulation, a terrible taxation system, the EU…

I keep seeing these over Manchester recently….does anyone know what its about?

Probably just training in case there is a major incident with large casualties and the RAF are called in to help move the injured to hospitals.

Are these Boeing and NG designs effectively representative of a production airframe?

No, they aren’t, hence the big size difference with the X-47C!

Apparently you haven’t heard about BAe Taranis and Dassault nEUROn

Thats not what we his saying. We all know Taranis and Neuron exist, but they are UCAV. What we mean is that France and Britain are not combining the Neuron and Taranis programmes, they are combining a Reaper style programme! Essentially it looks like the French are going to use the BAE Mantis platform, but outfit it with some of their own systems. Nothing to do with Neuron or Taranis.

Impressive but I still think that manned aircrafts will remain a threat for a very long time.
Unmanned aircrafts rely on satellites for over the horizon operations, and satellites can be jammed or destroyed. The price to operate a drone via satellite is very expensive, and so the Phantom Ray will remain for a long time as a reccon, spy and EW platform.

The only reliance is only on navigation satellites, and this applies to manned aircraft too! Communicating with the UCAV is optional on a strike mission if you know what you are striking and don’t care about aborting the mission if its too risky for people on the ground. Obviously use without comms sats is unacceptable for the US, but I doubt such downsides would bother America’s enemies in the slightest 🙂

Is it the one they are supposed to develop with dassault from now on or a other one ?

I’ve not seen anything stating they have combined the programmes.
