Thanks Merlin. Any chance you can send me those in high res please? Send me a PM.

You mention red/white one. I presume you mean red/white Andover? I seem to recall a red/white Andover being down the bottom near the Neptune and Britannia before the mass aircraft move round started a couple of years ago.

With this Andover being scrapped, can you confirm there’s still another on the airfield? And do you know the museums long term plans on the Argosy? I guess it may find a home inside once the new exhibition building is finished? If it does it will be the first Argosy under cover – all we need then is for someone to do the same for a Britannia…

Whistling wheelbarrow = Argosy (as used by yours truly in the Middle East and for radar calibration in Europe)

Papa Lima, with your comment above, thought I’d attach this photo of XN818 at RAF Khormaksar June 1969 – hope it brings back memories!

Anyone know if they have fitted the tanks to the Valiant yet and where it is parked now? Would love to come and take some shots, but won’t make the long trip if it’s nowhere to be seen!

Kodachrome 64, full sun, side on, please Albert!

Would love to get to see it myself but unless it’s still outside mid July, flying 5,500 miles home for a few piccys is a tad excessive! Even by my standards!

Merlin101, what’s the story on the Wheelbarrow? Its been parked on the airfield for more than a year or so now – and did you get any shots of the Andover being scrapped?

Looks to me like there’s still a considerable amount of work needed to put her back into the air.

Indeed…do we really think she’s going to fly again? Any body know how long has she’s been dormant now?

Guess a weekly looksie to see if anything’s happening will give us an idea, unless you can find a freindly engineer who’ll give you the ‘low down’!

I too wonder how they will get the Valiant out- I don’t know, but I assume it was ‘built in’ when the Bomber Hall went up, like the Vulcan? One wonders how far a Valiant comes apart, and whether they’ll actually have to gas axe the thing to get it out the back door?

Valiant is already at Cosford and being reassembled. It was sectioned professionally by the RAF’s ‘Crash & Smash’ team at Marham when the decision was taken for it to move to Hendon. Therefore, like a giant meccano kit, I guess it was relatively easy for them to break it apart again.

SeaFury, did you take a shot of this also so that we can see if it’s almost complete?

MrB.17, Damien baled out on the 10D early last year and he’s been using a couple of D60’s until recently.

What was the reason for dumping the 10D Damien?

You must have been on another planet then mate – firmware v1.05 was released to fix those very problems (and doesn’t in all cases from some accounts). v1.04 was meant to fix it, but ended up killing a bunch of cameras stone dead…

Reported problems with 20Ds include the shutdowns, poor autofocus accuracy, poor-fitting battery grip, useless AA battery insert for the grip (only allows a handful of shots before exhausting the batteries!) and probably a few other things I’ve forgotten. A surf of any of the photography forums will find plenty of posts about these – there are a significant number of 20D bodies that are faulty. Many sound fine, but if you want to play the lottery, it’s only a quid for a ticket…

Damien’s the man to listen to as he was using a Canon 10D (same as me) and has now changed (not for a 20D) so unfortunately I have to bow to him as it seems he knows what he’s talking ’bout!

256Mb cards are totally impractical, especially when shooting RAW. On the 1D2 I can fill a 2Gb card in very little time – juggling 8 256Mb cards doesn’t bear thinking about.

Yeah, but you’re a pro so most of us never use the RAW setting!!! :p

I’m back in the SLR world having gone from a canon compact to a 20D, my question is what do the top bods on here use in terms of zoom lenses (I have a 300mm zoom). Do you use teleconverters or are the shots on here heavily cropped.

also what kind of exposure settings do you recommend for airshow photography (aircraft against blue sky) – like that ever happens these days!!

Any assistance getting up to speed much appreciated, as it’s been a long while since I used my old 35mm EOS, and even then I used to point and hope!

    cheers

    Zwit 🙂

For me zwitter is’s a Canon 100-400IS USM and fixed f2.8 300mm. Both fairly expensive lenses but they give great results.

One other thing, don’t but CompactFlash cards bigger than 256mb – WHY? – because although unsual they can become corrupt. A friend of mine was using a 1.0Gb at Reno last year and once filled and back home found that he’d lost the lot!!! Moral of the story is he would have been better using 4 x 256mb cards!

MrB.175, looking at your photo of the Vulcan, I cannot help but notice that work seems to be ongoing with Buccaneer XV350, do you have any photos of her?

Here’s a photo of her. There was no specific work being carried out, the members of the Aeropark occasionally open the engine access doors, cockpit and nose cone to allow vistors a better look at her.

How do you get to look round this area now?

As you should have done before, you write a nice letter to them!!! 😉

I had a visit around the firepits in August 1992 and the only Vulcan left then was XL386

    Tim

Are you sure of the dates as my records show August 1993…

Can anyone confirm for me when XM657 was finally scrapped? 🙁 I know she was flown to RAF Manston on the 12th of January 1982 to become an instructional airframe, and that she was still clinging on to life in early 1993, but does anyone know how long she survived after this date? Any pictures chaps?

Hi XL391, here’s 2 shots I took of her when I visited the RAF Fire Training School at Manston in October 1985. She still looked pretty good then.

Early in 1988 the School dug a hole and positioned her nose leg in it which simulated a nose gear collapse and more challenging rescue scene for fire figthing practice. I believe she stayed in this nose down attitude until being scrapped by well known Essex based aircraft scrappy, Hanningfield Metals during August 1993 (XL386 was scrapped at the same time). Hope this answer’s your question, I’d like to see if anyone post’s any photos of her after I took mine.
