XM496
and of course Britannia XM496 will fly-in for the event again!!!
Thanks badger. That’s good news at is sounds (and looks from the amount of scaffolding) that the museum is not just doing a ‘slap & dash’ job.
Also I would still like to locate a few photos. Crash at Le Touquet of G-APNH, LN-NAA derelict at Bangkok
Patrick
Put me down for a copy of the book also. I noticed that you’re looking for a slide of LN-NAA at Bangkok. See below, is this one any good? Send me a PM.
Update?
Anyone out there got an update on the repainting? Just interested to see how it’s going…
It’s the RAF museum – BA and it’s decendants have ceased to be important.
The poor old thing will get a RAF scheme to keep her going for a few more years.
Of course David I fully understand repainting the old girl into RAF colours to fall in line with the museums policy, but how about the Boscombe Down machine XX367? That would have made for a much more attractive looking aeroplane…
In any event, as long as the repainting prolonges her life sufficiently to get her turn under cover, that’s all that really matters.
I will take a wild guess – RAF Transport Command colours?
Although it’s difficult to see another scheme, I hope not David as this’ll really not help the only real RAF Brit left in existance…XM496 at Kemble.
Steve would like to see the finished painting! I remember going to hamilton airshow and seeing the victor laying on her belly off of the runway.
Peter
Do you have a photograph? I’d like to see it if you do and can post it.
Fuming!
Sorry for having to say this but it’s my view and why we have forums!
I’m totally with you phixer, 110%. Kemble is a wonderful place and we are most fortunate in having it as home for our old girl – XM496. As to the comments re ex-RAF pilot complaining, I’m sorry, but I think you mean it’s ironic that a person who once flew probably noisey aircraft now does not like it that his/her retirement, noisey aircraft occasionally fly over his house.
So glad I live in Asia as with the UK turning more and more into a nampy-pamby state, this person (and all others) should move if they don’t like the noise. The case is totally different from the noise of a caravan park or say the building of a new bypass. Kemble’s been an airfield for a great many years, so I say, people of Kemble, get used to it….or you know what you should do!!! 😀 😀 😀
Yes – wonderful!
Great to see the team spend so much time on getting this colour scheme as accurate as possible. Being a little somewhat out of touch here in Asia can anyone tell me when she will be completed and if she’ll spend any time outside in this scheme?
I’m going to be proudly marching that day, hopefully with a couple of thousand of other blokes who took part in liberating the Falkland Islands from the Argentine invader. I say ‘proudly’ because I am bloody proud of the fact we that we did our duty and did it well.
I will not react adversely to some of the ‘bizarre’ comments I have read here.
Regards.
A proud sailor of the South Atlantic Task Force 1982.
Just wanted to say thank you for risking your life for Queen and Country. This will truely be a time to honour those that will never return and a flypast over London in memory of the whole campaign is a fitting tribute.
Of course it will be great if the Vulcan does make it but with so many ‘kills’ being made by Sea Harrier’s, lets keep our fingers crossed that some of the spiritual successors to the SHAR FRS.1 – the Joint Force Harrier GR.9’s of No.800 Sqn, are allowed to fly ‘up’ the mail!!!!!
Does anyone know what plans there are to celebrate the anniversary in the Falklands themselves? I heard recently that Typhoon’s will be sent down there soon to relieve the good old hard working Torndao F.3’s of 1435 Flt.
XL391, you have not answered my earlier question, where did you get your avtar photo? I don’t mind people using my pictures but it would be nice if they asked first! 😡
You mean that none of them were sold??:(
I think all the models have been sold now. It seems quite a sought after model as they always go high when they come up on ebay.
The way to make a diecast model of an aircraft help pay for the upkeep of the real thing is to commission Corgi – or someone else – to do the model and sell them yourself. Keep the numbers sensible and you will be able to shift many of them at full price (which you’ll decide) to collectors and make a tidy profit, with sales to passing museum visitors etc. trickling in from time to time too.
Why should you expect charity?
’cause without it, the old girl will not survive!!! The small team looking after 496 spend far more of their own money on her that that which comes in via donations.
Need to find a nice benefactor that’ll build us a hangar, etc!
I do agree with your point though Damien and perhaps this is something we could have looked at, but the first anyone from the 496 team knew that Corgi were going to release an RAF Brit in XM496 colours was when it hit the shops!
Could be some a nice way to help support the project in a way providing Corgi would donate a percentage for each sale.
It is one way to help as they need as much support from any angle.
Forget it…Corgi is only interested in the commercial side of the business – how much money “they” can make. They produced a model of Britannia XM496 and none of these models helped the real XM496 at Kemble which needs support in just the same way as the Viscount…
UH-12 Hiller in pub garden???
I don’t know about Jets in pub garden’s but late 70’s I recall a pub at the end of Stockbridge (in Hampshire nr Middle Wallop) highstreet that had a UH-12 Hiller in the garden which was acting as a plaything…I know ‘casue I pretending to be a pilot one summers eve whilst on the way back home from a Yeovilton Air Show with the folks!
Anyone remember this or got any pics?
