not what I read in indian media. it was designed from day1 as
a top-attack projectile and fired on targets in armd warfare center, ahmednagar for user trials. it swoops up and hits the tank turret-top directly rather than the more complex overflying it and releasing penetrator darts at 90′ like swedish BILL does.
I believe efforts are still on (maybe with israeli involvement) to
master a MMW guidance radar for Nag-MMW version which would
enable engagements in very hostile conditions (IIR doesnt cut it in sandstorms, heavy rain or such…)
the missile is much heavier and bigger than konkurs/Milan which
infantry carry around . it is not a infantry weapon – only a BMP2
chassis and helicopters can carry it.
in the next few years indian army will first add about 50-100 armed Dhruv helicopters – 4 nag ATGMs (with infra red imaging seeker – fire n forget), 3-barrel gun under nose, night vision. in
the light anti armour role. Nag has a range of 4km and is top-attack once beyond 1km. it has already cleared user trials.
in 5 years the LCH which HAL is presently working on will appear.
it is a tandem-two seat derivative of Dhruv and was shown in
crude form last year in bangalore defexpo03. looks like a rooivalk / tigre style dedicated attack chopper. the armanent will likely be the same but will be more armoured, nimble and survivable, having some israeli avionics . again around 200+ are likely to be ordered because army has 20 divisions and each
needs some, strike divisions need more.
the Mi35s will be retired within the next decade. Alouette-IIIs
are long in tooth and will all be gone. Mi17V armed with the
Vikhr atgms(iirc) are coming in quantity now.
thats the comparison going fwd. Mi17V in medium logistics and
hi-altitude attack, Dhruv and LCH-Dhruv for light logistics and
gunship. a new LOH(light observation heli) tender is out to
vendors for license making a light helicopter for scouting duties
(kinda like kiowa warrior?).
old UH-1s, AH-1s and unarmed MI17s do not look impressive
in comparison today and certainly not in future.
Pak needs to get modern helicopters to have any hope of matching indian quality and quantity. I suggest something like
Rooivalk + AH1Z in attack role with latest hellfire ATGMS and
loads and loads of Mi17 to improve their weak logistics.
but they dont have the budget for it from internal resources
and USA doesnt seem interested in lavish aid packages lately,
just loan bailouts and reschedules.
they can get off the GCI bandwagon if A-50s are available in
numbers , otherwise whats the option? the limited older airborne
radars didnt permit much freedom for anything else. only Mig31
and the big new Su30 radars permit some fighter ‘wolfpacking’
in due course yes, but right now they need more flying hrs more
than anything.
maybe on Mig29K too ?
I dont like the ugly bank of switches in top-right of front cockpit.
wonder what they are for…
Mi8/17 and UH-1 family looks ageless. the Alouette-IIIs will also
be around forever!
> Also right now it might be time to relinquish Chechnya.
why? every part of ones country is worth fighting for, you dont
put an economic value on it. its a matter of principle.
also leaving chechnya would hugely encourage the islamists and
soon they would start biting all over the place….
all this “Selling only to democracies” is a hogwash. when taiwan
and s.korea were under authoritarian rule, plenty of US gear
was sold..though I am not familiar with the exact systems. Iran
under the Shah was being built up as the most powerful of the
US allies in the region – F14s, phoenix missiles etc. and under
the late Gen Zia ul Haq pakistan received a $3+ billion plus mil
aid package including F16s, sidewinders, ships, harpoons, P3,antpq36 and so on.
US prefers orderly authoritarian regimes to unruly democracies
and will help whoever does its bidding, the pedigree doesnt
matter 😮
no offence intended, but if a project is closed and PRC policy
is not to disclose much, its best NOT to get into fights based on
scraps of info + guesses that leak out. its better to wait until
PAF gets the bird and some PAF high-up comments on what it
has.
russia produced some great planes like Mig31 and Su27 with
no public news releases.
it can carry a giant 2-ton ECM suite based on the users reqs if
thats what you want. I am sure even the basic version had good
satnav gear for blind navigation over the arctic regions.
It can approach at mach2 at 50kft and let loose ALCMs and ASMs
and escape at mach2. now if these ALCM is a 500km range bird
what are you going to do about it ?
you’d need a large airwing and AWACS to protect naval SAGs
against this kind of threat…precisely why the USN invested in
the E2 + F14 combo.
others will need to take their chances on shooting down or
decoying Klub/brahmos etc in the envelopes of their SAMs.
how about 6 Klubs in internal rotary launcher and 4 under the
wings ? thats more warload than a talwar class frigate and able
to fly 2000km at a high speed….
given the sheer size and power of the Mig31, has anyone
considered the idea of mounting say 24 AA-12 in triple or quad packs on this bird ? using height x high speed it ought to be
able to dart in at 70,000ft, use lookdown-shootdown mode of
its PA radar launch missiles and leave with near immunity in
cross-border slash-n-run tactics !
why would Thales and Tecnacorp be needed for the FBW system
if as other posters say its all a done deal for the PRC and they
have got it to plug-n-play status ?
thales/others could be needed for Pak specified avionics, radar
or weapons but it has nothing to do with FBW.
is SNIPER significantly better than Litening-AT and follow ons ?
most IAF a/c in strike role are getting Litenings…
if its the non-FBW version undergoing tests now, I very much doubt anything in 2005 will be sporting FBW. when are they going to complete the basic version then move on to FBW unless they have already started testing FBW in parallel long ago?
and if they started with FBW there was no reason to go with
the basic version as acc. to chinese posters here the PRC has long
mastered FBW via versions of J-8 and J-10 😉
the probable timeline is the non-FBW version gets delivered in
2008 and then around 2012 you get a FC1 with full-digital FBW
if PAF wants it.
tu22m3 is not a big deal, what kind of ALCMs russia is willing to
release is more important…
