ndia to refit Navy flagship at no cost

    [TamilNet, May 25, 2005 21:06 GMT]
The Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) said an Indian naval delegation consisting of top engineers and architects is visiting the island to discuss the refitting of the SLN flagship ‘Sayura.’ The ship is to be refitted in a naval dockyard in India, the SLN said.

During President Chandrika Kumaratunga’s official visit of to India in December 2004, the Indian government had agreed to carry out the refit of ‘Sayura’ in India at no cost to Sri Lanka, the SLN said.

The ‘Sayura,’ an offshore patrol vessel (OPV) was purchased from Indian Navy in 1998 and served as the Sri Lanka Navy flagship and in off-shore surveillance operations, the SLN said.

I think the block60 tab got artificially inflated by the development cost of the plane. LM must have figured not much chances of finding a sufficiently rich buyer after the UAE deal (they are waiting for JSF) so that was only chance to recover the investment.

Pak will work the munitions and spares support under a separate deal to maximise the airframes for the money Unkil is willing to aid for/they can allocate from own budget.

I have been told a man named Hamza (assistant to Al-libby) is next bone to throw at Unkil. while #1 (osama) and #2 (omar) are off limits, anyone who occupies the #3 chair seems to be efficiently ‘rooted out’ by Unkils hound 🙂

I have a scan of old AFM around 2000 wherein pic of RVV-AE-PD is given at MAKS-99 and
caption says it had completed 10 successful test firings from ground rig and was ready for flight tests. the range increase was said 50% to reach 150km theoritical max.

the missile looked like fatter AA-12 with same lattice fins and four SA-6 style ram intakes down the sides.

if Ru has abandoned it, I wouldnt be surprised if china or india try to buy the intellectual property and form a brahmos type JV to complete the proj. same for KS-172..it has its uses.

Blackcat, the contest is between (VL_Mica) -vs- (Python4+Derby=Spyder).
the max range against fast movers of either system is around 10km, so point defence only.

imo vl_mica is going to win this, because its already deployed on ships (?)

not a chance. they had better stop wasting time down that tunnel and focus on s.american, african and east asian markets. even russia could use a decent light helicopter – what are they using now for casevac/recce/utility ?

should weight in at around $4bil counting spares, training and munitions.

They need to produce Osama or mulla omar to have Unkil pickup the full tab on this one.

considering the $$ they are getting from India , they ought to be made to take a lot more stuff. however our ‘leaders’ are too busy in petty infighting and settling political scores in delhi at the moment.

    Indigenouse Aircraft Carrier Steel-Strong

April 11 will be remembered a red-letter day in the Indian Navy’s quest for indigenous warship construction and significant milestone in the maritime history of modern India. On this day, the construction of India’s largest warship project, the first indigenous aircraft carrier designed by India Navy’s Directorate of Naval Design (DND), commenced at the Cochin Shipyard with the steel-cutting by Mr TR Baalu, Union Minister for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways in the presence of the Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Arun Prakash and Chief Minister of Kerala, Mr Oomen Chandy.

This 252 mtr-long ship, displacing over 37,500 tons, will be capable of operating a formidable array of 20 modern fighter aircraft of the MiG-29K, LCA (Navy) and See Harrier Genre and upto to 10 helicopters of different types Its 2.5 acre flight deck, with a maximum width of 58 meters, will enable launch of fighter aircraft using ski-jump for take off and arrester wire for landing on an angled deck. Powered by four LM 2500 gas turbines, generating 80 MW of power, the ship will be able to achieve speeds in excess of 28 knots. Manned by a complement of 1,600 officers and men, she will have an endurance of 7500 nautical miles She will be the first warship to be built with quality steel, developed in India by DRDO and SAIL.

At an impressive ceremony held at the Cochin Shipyard Ltd (CSL.), the Naval Chief stated that the design and construction of such a ship would mark the ‘coming of age’ of India’s indigenous warship building capabilities. India has now joined an elite club of six other nations which are able to conceptualise and realise an endeavour of such dimensions and complexity. The keel laying is scheduled in October 2007. The ship is expected to enter service in 2012.
