Bangalore, Feb 10 (IANS) The Indian Air Force (IAF) will sign a contract to buy 20 indigenously-built Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) with Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. (HAL), with an option to buy 20 more at an estimated cost of Rs.40 billion ($914 million).
Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal S P Tyagi told reporters Thursday at the
ongoing Aero India event that a contract would be signed soon to acquire the multi-role fighter aircraft, christened Tejas, in two phases.
“Each aircraft is estimated to cost about Rs.1 billion ($22.8 million). We hope to receive the first Tejas from HAL in the next 3-4 years,” Tyagi said.
Powered by GE 404F engines, the LCA is the most advanced combat aircraft currently. Designed and developed by the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA), three such aircraft have already been rolled out by HAL, which includes two for technology development (TD-1&II) and one prototype vehicle (PV1).
“Three versions of the aircraft are undergoing development flight trials. Till date they have collectively flown for 150 hours since the maiden flight in 2001. They have to still fly another 1500 hours for certification and other clearance process,” Tyagi said.
According to HAL sources, the second prototype vehicle (PV-2) is being weaponised and will be test flown in the next 6-8 months.
“We have completed the algorithms for the weaponisation programme. Mission controls have been taken up,” a top HAL functionary said.
The single-engine supersonic fighter with fly-by-wire avionics is expected to replace the IAF’s aging MiG fleet from 2010 onwards.

HAL to embark on projects for Indian Air Force
Indo-Asian News Service
Bangalore, Feb 10 (IANS) Defence behemoth Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) will embark on two more indigenous projects – a Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) and a Combat Attack Trainer (CAT) – for the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the global market subsequently.
HAL chairman Ashok K. Baweja told a news conference Thursday at the Aero India exhibition that the public sector company had proposed to IAF a dedicated LCH, which would be an upgraded version of the Advance Light Helicopter (ALH) for combat operations.
“The LCH proposal is at an advanced stage of consideration by IAF, which is our main customer in the domestic market. We have designed and developed a mock-up model to showcase its capabilities and strengths in battlefield. We are awaiting clearance to go ahead with the project,” Baweja said.
Though HAL will be currently focusing on its first three indigenously built aircraft, namely the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA), the Intermediate Jet Trainer (IJT) and the ALH, it has drawn up plans to take up the LCH and CAT projects over the next five years.
“We have displayed a mock-up model of the CAT at Aero India for consideration by the IAF as well as global customers. It is an advanced aircraft, modelled on the twin-engine, tandem seater IJT. It will be positioned between the British Hawk Advanced Jet Trainer (AJT) and the LCA.
“We have submitted a concept report to the IAF for considering CAT as a design and development project. Besides the three existing products, HAL will be engaged in developing the next two indigenous projects (LCH and CAT) during the next 5-10 years,” Baweja disclosed.
Meanwhile, HAL has taken up weaponisation of ALH to carry guns, rockets and missiles. They will be inducted by the three defence services — IAF, Indian Army and Indian Navy.
“We have also taken up a massive upgradation programme for the various aircraft which are being operated by the three services. For instance, the MiG-21 is being upgraded as MiG-21BIS with the latest cockpit, mission controls and avionics.
“Similarly, Jaguar, MiG-27 and MiG-29 of the IAF will be upgraded. Chetak and Cheetah helicopters, which are being used by all the three services, are also being upgraded as Chetan and Cheetal. Sea Harriers of the Indian Navy are due for upgradation,” Baweja added.

he close defense cooperation between India and Israel has worried Pakistan and brought about quick response from Islamabad.
Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf, Prime Minister ZafarullahJamali and other senior officials Wednesday held a meeting to discuss Sharon’s visit to India, Afghanistan and Iraq issues. Musharraf said that no compromise would be made on his country’s defense and all available resources would be allocated for this purpose. The sale of Phalcon systems was a matter of serious concern for Pakistan, he added.
Foreign Minister Khurshid Kasuri Wednesday said that Israel’s sale of weapons to India could disturb the balance of power in South Asia.

booo hooo. anyway, lets not hijack the thread. if you warn them it will be
ignored, if you get close to them the islamist hordes in the street will be very angry. do whatever you want.
the Swedes have this well organized system called BAS90 (?) with well equipped Gripens, Ereyies, well trained crew members, a surplus pool of pilots and dispersed landing strips on roads….it cant be cheap but I think its the only way Arthurs idea would work.
if the Japan AF can beat back the Carrier air wing , then those 80+ P3C can extract a very heavy price on the US SSN fleet in combo with their large fleet of ASW ships and helos.
beating back the CVBGs is the key. They need quality interceptors and strike planes.
How would the JASDF F-15 for a2a and F-2 for strike (harpoon) match up against the
defending screen of F-18C and F-18E/F ? Both have AWACS and AAR though japan has
a lot more places to hide in.
I have kinda revised my opinion, if japan can keep their airbases open against SLCM strikes via good SAM cover, they can extract a high price. Each SSN bagged is like $2 billion….
and ofcourse they would take over the US base in okinawa and close and impound all assets in Yokosuka (like the CVN stationed there)
confirmed stuff so far:
* 3 x EMB145 for AEW
* Derby deal for IN
* HAL-Snecma JV for engine parts
probable:
* some P3 for IN

> Blimey Indian you don’t do half measures do you?
I have never been accused of lack of imagination 😀
hypothetically can Brazil+Chile+Argentina recapture the Falklands and hold out against a determined British effort ?
wrt to the above if Brazil could get 50 Flankers armed with some form of supersonic ASMs
and a few Ereyie type systems would it tilt the balance in their favour ?
but I think the deal is going to happen though, simply because there is no other short term option. Until the MTA comes along or India-Embraer work out a ASW deal there aint no solution. Russia has long stopped making Mays and Bears and charges very steep now
for upg.
Extra! Extra! read all about it. but I dont think its a formal deal yet, HAL would be
doing some heavy repair *iff* the deal is signed…jmho just a unkil-proof insurance policy being laid out 😀

Lockheed, HAL ink deal on P3 Orion
Indo-Asian News Service
Bangalore, Feb 9 (IANS) Lockheed Martin Corporation, the US-based aeronautics major, has signed an agreement with Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) on technical assistance for its P-3 Orion maritime surveillance aircraft programme.
According to the deal, which was cleared by the US state department, both the companies will share export-controlled technical data related to the P-3 airframe component design, manufacturing and overhaul.
“The pact will allow us to proceed to the next level of maturity in our business ties with HAL. Integration of Indian firms like HAL in our global supplier base will attract our products to the Indian government,” Lockheed vice-president Dennys Plessas told reporters at the ongoing Aero India show here.
The Indian Navy has been studying the potential acquisition of used P-3 Orion aircraft under an inter-governmental agreement with the US Navy. Prior to the delivery, the aircraft will undergo a mission system upgrade and a complete airframe modernisation for 20-30-year service.
“Data exchanged under the agreement will allow HAL to provide detailed technical and commercial proposals for participation in the airframe modernisation programme,” Plessas said.
Over the last four decades, Lockheed has built about 750 Orions, of which 450 are still in service with 16 countries.
India is evaluating the used P-3 aircraft for acquisition for its maritime surveillance.
of the 16 Mig29K, perhaps 6 can be kept parked on deck and a few helos too to
create some moving space in the hanger. the helos could occupy the space on deck
just forward of the island.
Ah thanks for correcting me.
I guess they would have gained some exp from past work and for some bottleneck problems, MBDA can be paid by the hour and called in. I wonder who is going to build the active search radar … Unkil is always prowling in the wings looking to choke us…certain RF components for the BEL-WLR were sourced from Denel after a delay when Unkil as usual pulled the plug.
Rule#1 Never trust Unkil on anything
Rule#2 if in doubt, consult rule#1
