other than those canards, cutting out the tail and pushing the wing
backward, not much difference to a F22.

IAF setting up engg college at Jalahalli

    NEW DELHI/BANGALORE, DHNS:

The Indian Air Force’s first exclusive engineering college is likely to come up at Jalahalli in Bangalore, Air Chief S Krishnaswamy said here on Thursday.

“Final steps are being taken to operationalise the college and we hope to start the course early next year as the government is positive about the college,” he told reporters. The college is expected to fulfil the force’s growing need for engineering and technical manpower.

At the same time, as a part of its modernisation, the IAF may establish an institute for material management for better logistics and inventory management, which would help the force to cut down the spending and re-appropriate the resources for other use.

In collaboration with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), the IAF has come out with a software for inventory control and management which was successfully tested at 18 sites. The force is now in the process of implementing the software , which is acceptable to the auditors also, in 108 sites within the IAF, he added.
The airforce engineering college is likely to be set up at the Air force Station, Jalahalli, with an annual intake of 110 students of which 77 will be in the electrical stream and 33 in the mechanical stream. At any given point of time the strength of the campus would be 550 students. According to a highly placed source in the air force, the engineering students will be trained in subjects centring around the requirements of the air force.

The students, apart from general engineering subjects, would have subjects like aeronautical engineering and armament related engineering subjects in their syllabus, the source said.

The engineering students will be absorbed in air force technical college and other air force training establishments, the source added.

Selection of students for the engineering college will be through an all-India entrance test.

The infrastructure facilities, syllabi and other things are being worked out, the source said.

    > even if the SD-10 is little bit better in performance.

definitive conclusions about is performance wont be known for
many years yet. the CIA will get first dibs if the PAF obtains it 😉

until then its all speculation and statements by the makers
themselves, not unbiased 3rd party review based on released
    and trusted information.

    > I don’t think Russia is ahead of China anymore

    * russia/ussr has developed and fielded dozens of engine types
    * dozens of competitive fighter types
    * dozens of advanced missile types
    * dozens of radars
    * dozens of large aircraft upto the AN-225 level
    * dozens of successful SAM types

china does a better job in commerical manufacturing but in the military
area, Russia is still far ahead. thats why china is still spending billions of
$$ in buying up russian arms and trying to collaborate in many programs.

Name a few chinese defence products made totally locally that are equal or better than what russia has on the table today.

Nobody in this world is going to shoot down hijacked planes with BVR missiles. After all
efforts fail and at the last possible moment, a short range missile would be used.

Canada is having very great defence budget cuts. other than peacekeeping
ops there’s no forseeable threat in near future.

R&D on UUV should be pursued.

Canadian sub calls for help off coast of Ireland

    CTV.ca News Staff

A Canadian submarine off the coast of Ireland has made a call for assistance after a fire broke out on board. The British Royal Navy is responding.

The vessel has been identified as a diesel-electric patrolling sub, HMCS Chicoutimi, with 56 people aboard.

It appears there is a fire on board, Neil Smith of the Royal Air Force’s Rescue Centre, told CTV Newsnet.

“There are reports of three people suffering from smoke inhalation,” Smith said.

He added that it’s not known what caused the fire or what damage, if any, the ship has sustained.

Smith said the Royal Navy has a Sea King helicopter and a tanker on route to lend assistance. The Royal Navy is also in the process of scrambling a frigate as well to the site.

The Canadian navy only recently took possession of Chicoutimi and three other Victoria-class submarines from the British navy. The submarines were built in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

A renaming ceremony was held just this past Saturday in Scotland, as the submarine changed its name from HMS Upholder to HMCS Chicoutimi.

The Chicoutimi was on its way to Halifax and was due to arrive in Halifax harbour Oct. 18. It would then begin patrolling the East Coast.

Another of the submarines bought at the same time, HMCS Victoria, is currently testing its torpedo system on the West Coast. A third vessel, HMCS Corner Brook, is undergoing work in Halifax. The fourth craft is HMCS Windsor.

The British navy mothballed the subs in 1994 when they decided to go with an all-nuclear submarine force.

Canada agreed to buy the vessels in 1998 to replace three Oberon class boats. But shortly after Canada took possession, cracks were found in key valves on the subs.

Repairs and tests to certify the boats safe to dive took longer than expected, putting the “Canadianization process” about three years behind schedule.

looking at the photo the highest point in the island doesnt seem to
more than a few feet above the high tide mark. it may meet the same fate as Maldives if global warming raises sea water levels by melting of polar ice.

event today it looks like a big storm surge could swamp the
island. I hope they have ships on standby always.
