PRC has already received 54 AL-31 engines for J-10 between 2002-04. recently it ordered 100 more, and Salyut says they expect a follow-on order of equal size. It seems inspite of appearing to be in flight tests inside Su27 it is quite some years away from being declared ready for active duty and PLAAF not wanting to delay the entire J-10 any longer went for AL-31.

I guess the reason is reverse engineering or copying a AL-31 type engine isnt a walk in the park and from some point one has to figure things out themselves..Salyut is unlikely to help because nobody in the engine world shares their priceless design skills and test data.

    > To the Chinese, the AL-31F is not a proven design. For them, given its
    > numerous problems in service, it is pure crap and they would not have any
    > of it

well they have already signed up for 150+ on J-10. I dont see why PRC would
be running 200 flankers and now all its J-10s on a “crap engine”. ๐Ÿ˜€
other flanker users dont think its crap, though its mtbf isnt of the GE std.

why would they want that tiny undernose flir from Sagem when Litening-X is available on the rest of strike fleet ? Damocles is also there.

this thing looks much less capable & flexible as a external pod like Damocles, atflir or Litening.
it can only look forward and cant be used to orbit and spot targets in a cone below or to the sides.

    > IRST

    dont think so.

hmmm so the VDS is winched in and out pretty much like a towed sonar ? does the word “towed sonar” mean its floating on the surface only far behind the ship (to escape the engine noise) or it means a VDS ?

375/12 = $31 mil a pop isnt a bad offer for stuff thats been stored for 8 yrs now. for $62 mil u get a Rafale. u’d also get a brand new 2000-5mk2 for less than 62.

Qataris are now in a corner. PAF is committed to fc-1 and f-16 they dont need 12 of a unique type. nobody else seems to be in the market – brazil got a cheaper deal from france.

so either they can let this kit rust or make some money off it like say $400-450 mil including the Micas.

btw how does a VDS look like ? is it lowered on a rope down to that depth or its able to adjust the beam from the surface somehow ?

but if a helicopter or LRMP is prowling above, the surfaced sub which can barely make 20 knots is a sitting duck for a rocket or missile attack with no chance of survival. this surfacing might work in a 1-1 Akula2:688I Tom clancy deathmatch somewhere near antarctica but not against a fully alert SAG with organic helos it wont.

I think going quiet and deep is about the only option a SSN has to sneak away once
detected and attacked. ideally it should avoid detection and launch torps/missiles from long range before sprinting off to a more secure location ? A spread 50km wake homers sounds ideal to deal with a passing SAG once they have crossed the subs location.

you can download a 3.8mb product brochure from the BDL website and look up the
specs and photos of the LWT.

Making New Delhi’s intentions amply clear, India’s Defense Minister announced [Thursday] the decision of the government to go ahead and purchase 12 Mirage 2000 V fighter aircrafts from Qatar and 11 Dorniers from Germany for maritime surveillance, in addition to inducting nine offshore patrol vessels for the Indian navy, and a C-303 submarine-fired torpedo decoy system from Italy.

C-303 is a torpedo decoy from alenia whitehead

problem is going to be the engine. other than M53-PX3 the french probably wont be 1% keen on trying anything. so thats the best and only option. with the M88-2 technology it ought to be both higher thrust and hopefully more economical to wring out some extra range.

but kinda sad to see M2K will not be a Block52 / 60 Falcon “elephant” with those huge
CFTs and hundreds of hooks to hang things on. A french 30000lb engine would have been great.

I have also tried getting to the bottom of this but cant. defencenews reported LWT didnt work, yet I can google +ve reports of it. all the indian media reports are root-noded in the defencenews report.

lets wait and watch. I had posted some links in one naval thread under BR.

I started this thread to see if anything competitive with the F-18 E/F could be wrung out of a single-engine airframe the size of M2K. if India goes for M2K and deliveries start in 2010, this thing will need to fly until 2040. current M2k-9 level will be totally outdated by then.

A longer airframe would permit packing in a much larger fuel tank for a 2-seater.
I am leaning towards a 2-seater model for all strike birds 100%.

    Am also assuming
    – Pirate/Elta IRST
    – integrated Damocles2/Litening3 in a semi-recessed pod housed under cockpit
area. it should have full 360′ horizon-2-horizon FOV including looking directly
backwards perhaps using 2 rotating balls one at each end.
    – raptor style laser p2p datalink for radar , voice.
    – ecm proof radio datalink to network upto 64 fighters & C3 planes together.
    – advanced submunition hi-speed ARM missiles and decoys

Snecma did propose a unrated M53 called called M53-PX3 to IAF -> fadec + better thrust.

    http://www.snecma-moteurs.com/en/actualites/faits_marquants/archives/bangalore.htm

    M53-PX3 mid-life upgrade

What is more, the M53-powered Mirage 2000 still has at least 30 more years of service life ahead of it. Snecma Moteurs is therefore proposing an upgraded version, the M53-PX3, with improvements in three major areas: reduction in operating costs, incorporation of latest technologies, especially for the control system, and enhanced operational capabilities, including higher thrust.
In November 2001 and July 2002, Snecma Moteurs organized meetings of the engine’s customers, to review the operational interests of the new version. Taking a very innovative tack for this type of engine, Snecma Moteurs is proposing to carry out production of the M53-PX2 in collaboration with the operators and/or industry from customers’ countries, in particular India’s ones.

    http://www.european-security.com/index.php?id=3715

Snecma Moteurs is now offering a new M53-PX3 version, replacing the current M53-P2, for both new contracts and retrofits. Drawing on experience with the new-generation M88, it is designed to increase engine performance (faster acceleration, higher maximum thrust) and reduce maintenance costs and fuel consumption.

Snecma Moteurs plans to carry out M53-PX3 development and manufacture in collaboration with our customers and/or the industry in these countries.

    http://62.210.128.65/en/finance/annual_report_2002/fin_report/activites_prop2.php

The M53 passed the mark of one million flight-hours in September 2002.
Snecma Moteurs finalized the M53-PX3 modernization project to maintain the engineโ€™s long-term competitiveness. Both the French Air Force and Defense Procurement Agency DGA, as well as several foreign customers, indicated they were in favor of the project. The development program should be launched in mid-2003, with service entry in 2007.

so theres no way the M2K can compete with the F-18 E/F then ? ๐Ÿ™
