    here’s some more:

India to buy 16 more Sea King helicopters
Bangalore, July 17. (PTI): The Indian Navy plans to acquire an additional 16 Sea King class helicopters from the UK-based West Land Helicopters for augmenting its fleet strength to over 30 medium range helicopters.

“We need about 16 helicopters to complete our fleet strength and have asked West Land Helicopters to look around for Sea King class helicopters which have flown about 1,000 to 2,000 hours,” Deputy Chief of Naval Staff, Vice-Admiral S V Gopalachari, told reporters here today after inaugurating the “Transmission Test Facility” of Sea King helicopters for the Indian Navy at the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited.

“We will buy it out, but of course, subject to government approvals,” he said.

The Navy had to “ground” the 10 to 12 tonne class Sea King helicopters after West Land held back spares and tools from India following the US sanctions after the Pokhran blasts in 1998.

“It did not affect our operations, but would have affected in the long run,” Gopalachari said, adding that indigenisation efforts for components and spares were immediately taken up.

HAL Design and Development Director Ashok Baweja said with the help of the private industry, HAL produced in India about 600 of the 700 spares and about 460 of the 490 tools used in the helicopters.

HAL, he said, had entered an agreement with West Land two months ago for transfer of design updates for the helicopter.

PS. SeaKing spares issue is resolved in 2002 after lifting of US sanctions.
there’s some kind of online spares ordering system for which IN was given the access!

    > The Bal has been in development since April 1984

I guess they gave up on it at some point. I doubt Russia would take 20 yrs to develop such a system.

FC-1 or any dedicated fighter will destroy such trainers in ACM.

by the time you add all the mission specific avionics to bring it on par and replace the engine with a true fighter engine the cost will be same.

the reorg into more independent formations closer to the border seems to have started. Ultimately 8 multi-divison “battlegroups” is the idea with mobilization time cut from 2 weeks to 1-2 days.

previously the 3 huge strike corps had a long way to travel
into their assembly areas in the desert and south punjab.

HEADLINE: NEW COMMAND TO BOOST SECURITY ON PAK BORDER
Srinjoy Chowdhury in New Delhi July 15. –

With defence minister Mr Pranab Mukherjee clearing the creation of a new Army command near the Indo-Pak border, only a nod from the Cabinet Committee on Security and before that, the finance ministry, are necessary before it becomes a reality.

The creation of the South-western Command will be the biggest step towards reorganising the Army’s defence structure in Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab-Rajasthan sectors. Defence officials said the command should come up sometime later this year. It will comprise 10 corps, a holding formation of two divisions – 26 and 29 – on the Pakistan border and one of India’s three strike corps. It will be wedged between the Western and Southern Commands. The headquarters for the command could be at Ambala though a final decision is yet to be taken. The 10 Corps HQ could be at Pathankot. Other places were also considered but many are being considered too close to the border.

Major changes in the Army’s Northern and Western Commands are likely. First, the Army’s 16 Corps will be divided into two – 16 and 17 Corps. The 17 Corps will be given to the Western Command which, geographically, will shift upwards, taking a chunk of the Northern Command’s space and strength. This is because Northern Command is being considered virtually unmanageable in terms of logistics. Currently, the Northern Command has 14 Corps, looking after the Sino-Indian border in Ladakh, Kargil and Siachen, 15 Corps responsible for much of the anti-militancy operations north of the Pir Panjal Range and military activities. Finally, 16 Corps, the biggest of the lot, has a similar profile south of the range. The process of reorganising the Army’s forces along the LoC and the Indo-Pak border began sometime last year.

Bring_it_on : India was “exploring” the idea of a few C-130 for
paras and to fly missions to our two Antarctica stations at which
it is proven and very good. I dont think it will be bought though,
the MTA proj with the russians offers far more offset, cost adv and tech.

I thought BAE and subcontractors have around 4000 strong
maintenance and training staff on site at any given time. fragments of info on the web indicate they dont think very highly of the local crew however…

I think the truck TEL thing is meant for the land-attack version…would be used to first wave attacks on hard static targets like radars , ammo storage and airbases.

India is building up a very ample stock of FAC/small ships each
    armed with 16 Urans!!

Also the old missiles on Osa boats are now apparently truck mounted and used for coastal defence though I have never seen
a photo of it. It has a large warhead though obsolete in other
respects – good for striking at transport ships. SS-N-2A
    range 46 km.

But I wonder – whos really in line to invade india next 🙂

more stuff arriving soon….from Embraer & Boeing. the HS748 in
VIP sqdn can finally be “gate guardians”

Five executive jets ordered by India from a Brazilian firm to ferry VIPs like the prime minister are expected to be delivered by October 2005, Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee said Thursday.

The government last year inked a contract with Brazil’s Embraer for the five jets, four of which will be inducted into the Indian Air Force and one into the paramilitary Border Security Force.

“The first three aircraft are scheduled for delivery in July 2005 and the remaining two in October 2005,” Mukherjee said in a written reply in the Lok Sabha.

Mukherjee said the new Congress-led coalition government did not propose to review the executive jet deal that was concluded by the previous Bharatiya Janata Party-led government.

Defence sources said the jets would be fitted with a wide range of avionics and equipment to protect them from threats like missiles.

US might sell missile warning systems to India

    Friday, 16 July , 2004, 09:49

Washington: The Pentagon has announced the possible 40 million dollar sale to India of missile warning and countermeasure systems for three new Boeing 737 aircrafts used by the country’s Head of State.
The three systems consist of an AN/AAQ-24 large aircraft infrared countermeasures system, an AN/ALE-47H countermeasure dispensing system and a AN/ALQ-211 early warning suite controller and radar warning system, the Defence Security Cooperation Agency said in a statement on Thursday.

It said that the total value, if all options were exercised, could be as high as 40 million dollars.

“India will install the self-protection systems on three new Boeing 737 aircrafts,” it said. “They will use the system for the movement and protection of their head of state.”

The prime contractor will be L3 Communications of Greenville, Texas.

The AN/AAQ-24 is a system that automatically alerts an aircraft’s crew to a missile launch and activates an infrared countermeasure to foil the launch.

The AN/ALQ-211 is used to detect hostile radar signals and jam them, and the AN/ALE-47H is a computer controlled system to dispense decoys.

    (1) are you sure about the 1 KA-28 ? ships of this size usually
    carry two.

    (2) I see four banks of rockets behind the Shtil. assume they are
    ASW rockets ?
