Details of Phalcon AWACS system are highly classified but they are stated to be considerably better than the standard Russian A-50 “Mainstay”(also based on Illyushin-76 airframe), two of which were taken by IAF on lease for exercises during summer of 2000. A-50 is equipped with Vega-M Research and Production Corporation three-dimensional pulse-Doppler radar with a MTI (Moving Target Indicator) for improved target detection and provides overland coverage against aircraft targets around 230 kilometres and against large ships up to 400 kilometres. It can handle up to 50 simultaneous targets. It was reported that A-50s leased to IAF was equipped with more capable Shmel-2 radar rotodome, but failed to clinch a deal.

Air Chief Marshal A.Y. Tipnis had recently indicated that the Air Force may not be recommending purchase of A-50 AWACS from Russia after the trials in India last year. But India will be buying the AWACS from elsewhere.
This appears to confirm that the nation is more interested in acquiring an A-50 equipped with Israeli Phalcon system.

An aircraft with Russian radar and communications systems was tested by the IAF in Chandigarh last year, but was rejected because it did not meet requirements, particularly in communications and surveillance software.

wuff wuff… a 5 min repeat of erika eleniak cake scene from part1
would make it better.
> In Congo
definitely one of my favourite bad movies. a couple of hot nude
scenes under a waterfall would make it outstanding. the female just cuts the apes into ribbons with that cool laser stick. yes it autotracks and takes out a MEO satellite too.
how about Firebirds ? tale of AH64s vs a nimble SOB little bird type helo flown my a merc. I actually thought it had some good scenes of nicolas cage attempting to fly using NVG under a canopy hood.
in Firefox the two Mig31s clearly looked like cardboard models..much worse than the far older USS enterprise in the first star trek.
I like “flight of the intruder” , “midway”, “bridges of toko ri” and
“tora tora tora” among the oldies.
Is there a film in europe about the german pioneer raid on Eben
Emael fort in belgium. would make a great commando movie if
shot by someone like wolfgang petersen.
I dont know if its on track or not. but the fallback option is a GE-IN20 not anything else because In20 will have same form factor and be easy to integrate.
‘Pearl Harbour’ when showing b&w recon shots of the area came up with a line of 3 Tico/Spruance DDG ships 🙂
now imagine what 3 Ticos with their SPY-1D + 3 * 122 VLS cells would have done the attacking force of IJN raiders ?
sigh, ever heard the joke of fitting a camel inside a fridge ? thats
what fitting a AL31Fx into LCA would be like.
GE has been given a $220 mil order to supply 40 engines.
No no air-war is not much popular in india . you think people can
understand the intricacies of the equipment ? any movie that
shows war only involves some ground battle scenes…and almost
none have the war itself as a central theme.
I think phrozen *may* be referring to Agnipankh (wings of fire).
http://www.indiafm.com/previews/03/agnipankh/index.shtml
in english my vote goes to ‘Independence Day’ (a bunch of rag
tag volunteers flying against the alien mothership) followed by
the sequels of Iron Eagle.
imo the best indian AF film to date is “Vijeta” (winner) the story
of a group of young Mig21 pilots. the hero gets shot down over the
desert, some of them are Kia and finally he buries his demons and
walks out of the desert. it was made in early 1980s.
http://www.warbirdsofindia.com/ffilms.html
The Movie Vijeta produced by noted film actor Shashi Kapoor , picturised the life of a fictitious fighter pilot Angad Singh. The movie , shot in the AFA Dundigal and other environs, has fantastic footage of HJT-16 Kiran training, and MiG-21s. For a filmscene showing an emergency landing by a MiG-21 overshooting the runway, a MiG-21 airframe (probably Derelict) was set on fire at the end of the runway. No info as to which airfield this was filmed in or where the burned wreck is.
HAL has a contract in hand to make the much larger AL31FP
engine with transfer of tech. so I think a production kaveri would
be made in india.
Deino, the PV1 is lighter than the two TDs by a few hundred Kg.
composite use was increased towards the final goal. PV2 which
should take to air in a few months is likely to be the final config in
composites & avionics.
drdo has asked IAF for b737 or il76, but they didnt have the cash
or resources to spare a couple of these for CABS, so they had to go with HS748. Embraer is the obvious choice now as india has already ordered 6 Legacy for VIP duties.
EMB145 (brazil) + domestic radar + some israeli systems is the
best guess people have. they want a lightweight PA antenna as on
Ereyie.
The system will backup and plug holes the few Phalcons cant cover. I dont see India having more than 6-8 Phalcons coz of the expense…about $300 mil each.
tsk tsk Blackcat, India spent $600,000 to lease two A50s for a
month and tested them very extensively from Chandigarh AFB. They did not meet the IAFs requirement. So you are saying developing a new radar and C3I system to meet the bar would be done shorter + cheaper than something IAF says meets the std i.e Phalcon ? India already has some exp with the Phalcon systems radar as 2 x Green Pines are deployed on the ground and now Elta aerostat radars are entering service.
raw thrust isnt everything. cost, MTBF, response curve -vs- throttle, ease of maintainance, gaining of technology base are all factors to watch.
news reports on kaveri status in india are scarcer than snow in madras, so none of us indians here know whats going on in Gromov instt with the tests / changes etc.
the article confuses between the engine order for IAF HJT-36
(tender was between larzac and Ufa) and Ufa won with AL-55 engine
( a scaled down, non-afterburner AL31). India has already signed a contract with GE for 40 engines for a sum of around $220mil.
If kaveri doesnt work out, GE has offered to use some of the Gripen’s
RM12 engine tech + FADEC + sundry improvements in a new engine
dubbed GE404-IN20 which would match the kaveri specs.
There is no chance of any RD-xx being used on LCA.
