Ashley, re: road path
I lived in DX area from 1964 -> The A505 was continually being redesigned (as it still is. I believe the building in the foreground of the picture is a gas decontamination centre located where the access to Russell Smith Fms now is ( before the turn to Thriplow. Sadly th old boys who I knew who who know ain’t about any more…. maybe this is why we should get it right!!
Note : As soon as I mentioned the India thread it went downhill with reference to Dulux paint schemes etc.
Hey you you ought to see the scheme my 8 year old and I have created for our Airfix Tornado kit!
Andy in Beds
Now we are talking from the same hymn sheet!
Answer is as stated: “Actually I think that as most of these people are understated and would be embarassed by the thread “
Please don’t get me wrong I revel in the work at old warden etc, I have a display leaflet from the 1960’s when I first visited there. The point is that there are as many knowns as unknowns and therefore I question the benefit of the thread. To me it is as valuable a resource as Channel 4’s 100 best cartoons.
Compare thread this to Mk 12 ‘s India thread.
Actually I think that as most of these people are understated and would be embarassed by the thread you must say why? If you miss a critical and sensitive name they will be offended.
I don’t pxxsx on a good thread, I have been and added to worth while informative threads. The names that aren’t here but should be show how arbitrary and ill concieved this thread is. As ever a little thought………..we have also been here before.
“Who’s here for medals?”
They know who they are, we know who they are, so why ?
I suspect you won’t win any medals by naming names here. Much better to start a low flying thread or even a Spitfire thread……………..just a thought.
Peter,
no, DX walls were part of 1950s expansion, no survivinging E pens, the perimeter air raid shelters also had dispersal billets built in the pen area righht up to early 1960s.
Just so you don’t all get exited about pictures and “finds”
Prior to Bof B film all the buildings were painted white with black (ish ) roof covering.
All camouflage at DX from the 70’s is as a result of the film.
The airfield was cleared of all props (sic) and debris after the film.
What would be more intersting would be pics from the early ’60’s with blast walls (also at Waterbeach) and billets between air raid shelters and original T2 (up to 1964?).
Extensive use of the airfield was made by the Territorial Army, CUGC (gliding), Agrochemical companies, a number of motor sport groups, a haulage company prior to IWM invlvement.
I have a few bleak pictures from this period which I’ll post when I find them, they simply reinforce the haunting atmosphre of many a deserted airfield.
I think the point is really that when any aircraft collection becomes institutionalised it loses some character. IMHO you have to believe an aircraft can fly otherwise the magic ain’t there.
Glad we have agreed that b/w piccie was DX not Fowlmere, that is how historical innaccuracies start.
The old fowlmer tech buildings are adjacent to Fowlmere village which isn’t vissable in that picture………….
I think you’ll find that pic is duxford, topology is wrong for Fowlmere innit?
A sort of promise, I have scanned a faded Daily Telegragh photo and caption on this landing but couldn’t remember the date as I woz at school that day….
If I can find the cd I archived it on then I will attempt to post it. (don’t wait up I,m doing a qc check on a few bottle of Banrock Station .)
I’ve also found some slides of BBMF lanc at DX from same era starting up so if I can remember how to scan slides……
Sorry if I appeared a bit gruff earlier.
Logic dictates images on the web are compressed and therefore not really suitable for printing at quality.
If you are posting “professional quality” images why and where? There is such a proliferation of images that the value of any image is probably limited unless it has that unique “” factor.
If you are a professional then you are in a seriously different league and not a dabbler. Look at what John Dibbs posts on his site.
If you are seriously interested in digital art then you should invest in Photoshop training as it will pay serious dividends (especially when you considered what the software cost you in the first place). In the end though post images on the net and it really is fair game….
summed up as read the ******* manual. You did get a copy of the manual with your version of ps didn’t you?
He got married…………………………………………………
