Only if you’ve got no enemy air or air defenses. But then in a situation like that we could be using P-47s. Should we buy P-47s?

A10s with upgraded engines and avionics would do perfect…

=Barry Scott;1351577]Garbage to be polite (and I am actually trying to be here believe it or not)
Let me explain. Whilst there where alot of very vocal anti war and anti Iraq war protesters the majority of people were in favour. Remember its not always those who shout the loudest that have the majority.

So BOY you should apply for a job with BBC straight away, not only i have been living HERE since 1991 but i happened to be enjoying Parliament TV as well (at the time, since i binned my TV since i have a screen WAY better than any TV in the market and LOADS of good DVDs to watch).

As for yourself you’re VERY vocal about literaly everything…:D

Not that i disagree with you when the final decision is made, But Robert Macnamara in his memoirs, (if thats how its said in french) Fog of War movie concluded that, -perhaps one should take into consideration what allies think about the whole prospect. (About Vietnam)
It’s a real interesting movie i can recommend to anyone even remotely interested in politics.

Not FAR OFF if my memoire doesn’t fail me.:D

Are they still seriously looking at Rafale as an airborne UCAV controller?

YES, there was a collaborative programme with Boeing demonstrated at Eurosatory AND Le Bourget Airshow some years ago (2005).

The point was to demonstrate the feasability as well as the technologies involved and they did just that down to the software and instalation of the system in a Rafale D rear seat (Simulator).
    http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r279/sampaix/moustique_le_demonstrateur_de_drone.jpg
I do not know though if this was test-flown or anything because it is quiet a subject to get infos about and there is nothing new about it since that i have heared of but it was presented by Marseille’s Centre d’essais en vol (CEV / base d’essais en vol d’Istres) in Sept 2005.
    http://www.defense.gouv.fr/dga/votre_espace/presse/dossiers/la_dga_aux_rencontres_nation_defense_2005

BTW this is the main reason why Dassault themself didn’t demonstrate autonomous flight for an UAV untill late last year with AVE-D, different priorities, expecialy because SAAB who are expert in this field ARE Main partner with the nEUROn programme.

Something people also forget to mention:

EVEN the Defense Minister’s White Book underlines Dassault capabilties to DESIGN and MANUFACTURE fully indigenous high-performance fighters as a STRATEGIC asset for France’s National Security.

Enuff said, those who hope Rafale to be the “last one” might well be repeating the same mystake that we were witnessing when they designed F1 and then 2000, the country WILL retain these capabilties as part of our National Security Strategy.

    Utter Tosh… Again…

    WHOTWAZAT?

He might not elaborate technicaly so prettyly but he is perfectly right.

    http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r279/sampaix/Dassault-30-8-07-1.jpg
THIS is where Rafale lead Dassault-Aviation.

    1) Main architect and Design authority on nEUROn. (Responsible for FCS)

    2) Preliminary studies from DGA programme on an Operational version of nEUROn.

    3) Feasability studies on technologies for (export) Mirage 2000 and Tornados replacement (EFCAS).

    4) First composite part for the nEUROn UCAV as early as June 2007.

    5) Further developement of Dassault Composite technology and production sites.

Otherwise said at design and engineering level; unvaluable.

As for the Rafale programme it’s not over, DGA ordered further developement for new capabilties.

    Wrong comparison. 😉

    Totaly.

The Mirage III couldn’t be compared to anything but the F-104…

As for F-14/F-15 there weren’t/aren’t any equivalent in service either.

It’s not hard to see that performance-wise, even the Russians can do as good or sometimes better, Migs 15/17 in Air Combat over Korea and Vietnam gave the USAF/USN some hard time.

The case of the 21 was different, it wasn’t meant as a dogfighter and wasn’t used in sufficient numbers to realy have an impact but even compared to the F-4 it was no slouch.

Given what it lacked (BWR capabilties) it would have been even worse a threat than it was with unreliable and underperforming Atols.

I’m not slashing US aircraft here but the idea that they are/were “superiors” either because they sold more or were even more succesful in combat Ops is simply inacurate.

What’s the score of the F-104 in A2A compared to the Mirage III?

European designs have little to envy to their US counterparts even today.

I made the wrong comparison for sarcastic purpose.

    Please to know that…

I have a request for the topic specialists.

Could you post some material on both F-16 and Mirage 2000 perfs from GAF sources?

    Thanks!

Are you kidding me? The entire nose section has been reprofiled, the intakes have been slid to the rear along the fuselage, the wing sweep was changed, the wing and tail outlines were changed…the YF-22 underwent a lot of evolution to get to the production configuration.

    From DRYDEN with love. 😎

My fav was always the F-23 but i dont bash-up F-22 design for that matter, and i agree with my national specialists who regards it as the “most powerful” of all fighters (translated from French literaly)..

I’m not disagreeing with you, just pointing out that European public opinion shouldn’t be a deciding factor if the US goes to war. Anyway, back on topic now 😀

    OKDOK.
