@noble
It is famous for its attack role. Do anyone know anythings about it air to air combat capability? It is called a strike fighter, but it had slow speed? why no afterburner? what is its turning rate? would you rate it with F-8E?
The Super Etendard is stricly a marine STRIKE aircraft and was never realy intended to be used in the air superiority role by the French Navy.
Super Etendard is derivated from the Etendard IV designed in the early 50s to answer a French Air Force requierement for a light tactical support ground attack aircraft.
At the time it was meant for dual role, light A2A and A2G but it was turned down by AdA and only the Marine Nationale version was developed.
It was pited vs the FIAT G91 in a NATO contest and lost to it but the French Navy ordered its strike version in 1954.
It demonstrated low altitude and ground attack qualities from day one but was far less suited to A2A duty due to its incread weight compared to the AdA version, a less powerful ATAR 8C and lack of afterburner.
Super Etendard answered a 1973 requierement for a version equiped with modern systems and weapons and is now extremly capable and versatile although its small size limits its payload and range (it weights one ton less than a Harrier II).
I use to see them flying when sailing in the rmediterranee, together with the F8, my impression was that it was quiet maneuvrable but far less powerful than the Crusader and for this reason only it wouldn’t be as effiscient in the Air to air role.
I find it hilarious that everyone seems to forget that F-35 is primarily a STRIKE aircraft, not designed for A2A superiority, i regard it as a stealthy A7 Corsair II rather than a F8 Crusader or F4 Phantom.
Let’s look at FACTS:
What makes F-22 so superior is lacking in the F-35; supercruise, hypermaneuvrability, high dash speed, high altitude ceilling.
These are fundamentals of the USAF STEALTH conceipt as defined for the Air Supremacy role together with EM and IR stealth (F-35 EM stealth being nowhere near that of the F-22 levels and the latest ALSO lacking in F-35), more to it, the USAF never intended to use F-35 on its own.
All in all i am not surprised than F-35 can loose to a more performant 4th generation air superiority design equiped with 4.5 or better, 5 generation systems, which BTW includes long range/all weather IRSTs…
According to Dassault, the Rafale programme is STILL for 294 aircrafts.

Good news for the French Forces…
In my book the F-4 Fantom WAS perfect.:cool: Once is was equiped with a gun…
8AAMs in A2A configuration, a real bomb truck in A2G, Naval and land version, not much more to ask for.
Rogerout: I think one should be very careful about blaming the pilot with so little information
Agreed expecially because i don’t recall the Typhoon fleet being grounded previously. So what’s the score then?:confused:
@Jwcook: Thank you.:)
Jwcook: If it is pilot error then a grounding isn’t necessary
Was the Typhoon fleet grounded following the first incident involving a landing gear staying up?
It seems that up to now no one can tell for sure the exact circumstances of this particular one.
@Jwcook
There is something still puzzeling me about this infortunate event.
If this was a pilot error, how come that MoD didn’t release an official statment even to say they’re investigating the matter?
Something else (about Typhoon Mach limitation) i recall reading you in this forum perhaps not as specific as to mention a figure but you were talking about this limit having read it in a mag?:confused: ,
What was that all about?
Most of that “informed” opinion on these forums comes from the british side to be honest. Especially from journo’s, not to say theyr wrong; I tend to agree with them, but I dont believe the EFs edge against contemporary FJs is as great as they make out.
Well at least in the case of the MMI it’s very much like it.
What does it says about the man-machine interface if it doesn’t wake you up when you’re landing gears up?:diablo:
John Cook: About Nagging Nora…
According to EADS Eurofighter: There should be something (a cross + vocal warning) showing on the HUD; a “pull up” call when the velocity vector is below the horizon line at low altitude with the gear up, (not the aircraft nose).
Only 2009? What exactly caused this delay? Surely AASM is not the only reason, commercialy it makes sense to have Damocles integrated earlier than that…
I have trouble understanding how does Rafale fighting in Afganistan relates to Typhoon belly landing in the US…
Anyway some sources would indicate a pilot error, any fresh news?
When will the Rafale endly be equiped with a laser designation pod?
Typhoon is said to have one???
@Jwcook.
I fail to understand, after all the efforts made by some journalists to promote the aircraft through medias and forums, why propagating such unwelcome (for Eurofighter i’m sure) news?
I seems to remember though that you posted some information regarding some MoD report on an imposed Mach limit some time ago, could you please tell me where you did read this?
Anyway what is your opinion on the impact this could have on the future developement and sales of Typhoon?
Regards. L.A.
