    woomera

My Uncle was a engineer based in woomera during the missile tests. He had emigrated to Australia in the 1950s and used to come visit us in Scotland during the 60s-70s (which in those days cost a lot) he used to tell my mother that one of the biggest things he noticed was the amount of German accents around the missile base the implication being that these were the german scientists who surrendered to the British during WW2

    July 7th 1951 B29 USAAF Crash

On a similar somber note I have a newsletter from the village of Carsphairn in Dumfries and Galloway which tells of the fatal crash of a B29 in July 1951 with the loss of 11 airmen onboard. A plaque listing the crewmen is on the side of the A713 heading towards Dalbeattie.

    blackbirds and the UK

Dont know if this helps but I have “SR-71 Blackbird Stories tales and legends” by Colonel Richard H. Graham USAF a retired SR-71 pilot and it does not mention any ops flights over the Falklands during the war.

    queensland air museum

Another nice air museum in queensland is at Caloundra aerodrome on the Sunshine Coast, when we were on holiday last year we had a visit. The website is http://www.qam.com.au
found especially interesting the flight of “Q” Queenie a brand new lancaster which flew from Prestwick airport 20 miles from where I live to Amberley Airfield Brisbane the flight took 72 hours, the flight took off on the 22nd of may 1943 and arrived on the 4th of June 1943.
And to cap it all on the 22nd of October 1943 Flt. Lt. Peter Isaacson flew q for queenie under the Sydney Harbour bridge!

    coranados and little Cumbrae

I have a press report in which it states the Coronados were moored off of Fairhaven Largs through the winter of 1945-1946 efforts were made to see if the US wanted them back under the terms of “lend lease” but this was not successful and they were towed out next to the isle of Little Cumbrae and scuttled on the 28th of March 1946.

    help

    Hi Pondskater,

I think I will try the Imperial war Museum oral history archive next. I have really just skimmed my Squadron records for 231/no.45 group but I have found some “gems” for further investigation including a list of the VIP crews for 231 squadron which includes S/L T.M. Bulloch DSO and BAR who did 3 tours in Costal Command as a U-Boat hunter. (I am sure I am not the only person who finds themselves going in completely the opposite direction when coming across a unexpected nugget of info!) anyway as to the Scottish Aviation archive I contacted the company who bought them over Spirit Aerosystems but got no reply, I may try them again.

Ren Frew I must admit the Mitchell Library was one I did not think of trying I will give both them and Dumbarton a call.

Thanks for the info on the book Peter, do you know if it has any photographs?

I have also been checking the Scottish Screen Archive and found and ordered a 10 minute silent movie from the early 40s called “flying above the clouds” it was an educational film showing 2 boys boarding a De havilland Rapide (G-AGUP) at Renfrew Airport and flying down to the island of Little Cumbrae before flying back along the coast over Largs then Greenock then Dumbarton Rock. Of Course the camera stops just before the Seaplane terminal in Largs (most likely wartime censorship) still it is an interesting little movie and I would recommend others check out the Scottish Screen Archive as a reference source.

I will continue to research and when I find anything I will post it here, thanks again folks
