As for the Beacon, ok the money could be used elsewhere, but if it brings more people into our hobby, I can quite happily live with it.

This is the problem. There is nothing to suggest that the building would actually attract people to aviation history. The museum already does that perfectly and to its fullest ability, with such a range of aircraft and variety of exhibits. The new building will not help, IMO.

I can only echo some of the views here, by saying that I am disenchanted and disgusted with the museums choice to build the tower. What a waste of money and time.

Hope they feel ok to fly by next Sunday. They’re a big part of my decision to attend Duxford.

    BK,
The nose lamps are on whatever the weather, and the only time they’re turned off is to “match” one that may have failed when they’re switched on.

The call from the Boss before the take off roll is “Lights,Poweeer” at which point whatever lights that are required are switched on (ALWAYS the nose lamp) and the HP Fuel C0ck (throttle) advanced all the way, with the engine t and p’s monitored. IF a nose lamp is out on a jet, the boss will call “Match, X” (insert your position number here) to synchronise the 9 Arrow (from the head on perspective). The bank of light switches are in a row and IF the strobes weren’t required that day, it will be that Flt Lt Egging may have accidentally knocked his on when turning his nose lamp. IF that was the case, it’s not a safety issue and no other team member would break into the radio to call it…the Boss is the man who does the talking, the others listen. On landing and debrief it would have been noted and a small fine paid ito a kitty. Alas, that was not to be and a very talented aviator is no longer with us.

I just want to say thank you, for the detailed and insightful post. Its appreciated.

Thanks you have saved me a trip, I have not been to Hendon in a while and i had wondered if anything has changed obviously not.

All the issues with the Halifax, The lighting in the BofB hall and the proposed tower thingy have been debated on here probably a thousand times but at least the doors are open and everything is under cover (except the Hunter yes i know) which is a plus.

I did hear that the upper floor galleries have reopened not sure what is up there now but in the past they have some very interesting displays i hope they do again (at least they did not become offices i suppose).

I’ve made my opinion about the museum in general clear on these boards previously, so I won’t repeat myself, but the gallery was new to me the last time I went and it was brilliant. They had authentic uniforms on show and an aviation art gallery.

I really wish the BoB hall was as light as the hall with the sunderland, it really allows you to view these machines in great detail.

The staff were terrible, but you’re there for the exhibits at the end of the day.

If we are generally recommending aviation films and trailers that make you want to see the film, I should’ve mentioned earlier our own Steve Hatton’s Into the Wind.

    Recommended.

    Thanks for that! 😎

I don’t know if any of you have seen this, but I think it’s well worth a watch.

    Last night watched:

Tender Comrade‘ – Ginger Rogers, 1943. Excellent little propoganda film.

Despicable Me‘ – fun animation about a professional criminal who adopts 3 little girls as part of a plan.

Recommend both, although Tender Comrade seems to be unavailable.

Here is one, shining example of what I’m talking about. This film just cannot get a commercial release (despite excellent reactions from festivals and audiences)! But I’m sure we’d all appreciate it, as well as countless others out there.

I’ve been following its development for some time. It’s available to purchase, but was never given a theatre run (even with an actor known for a fantastic part in Band Of Brothers).
