Nice to see you made use of your miles. You did well getting an award seat at short notice. A good report, and the winglets look cool.

Looks like we share a love of eating junk food while on the road!! Burger King/McDonalds = flying fuel.

Conspiracies aside, this ban on flying last month proves one thing at least, how much we need/depend on commercial aviation too live our lives the way we have become accustomed too. If it were some “green movement” i think it backfired worse than a Trent 900 full of volcanic ash.

The eruptions did seem to lessen in force towards the blanket ban being lifted, so the reduced amount of ash in the air was probably deemed safe to fly through? I did think at the time though that no real explanation was given to the sudden lifting of the ban. It all seemed a bit like this “massive global crisis” just went away all of a sudden.

I fully agree with the grounding of aircraft in these situations and would never “second guess” the pros in their chosen field, but i did start to wonder if there was a certain amount “back pedalling”. I know safety would never be compromised, but if the situation was marginal and the pressure was on to get people moving again.

Was it not decided to continue flying regardless?

I dont really know what the official take on it was? One minute the skys were empty, some guys in suits had a chat then a wave of planes appeared over LHR.

My guess is that aircraft movements will be less affected this time around based on better knowledge of the situation.

I see Air Crash Investigation is covering the BA incident again on TV this evening. I love TV. First we see the media keep hinting at the authorities being over cautious for locking airspace down, then as soon as airspace opens again they put a show on to put the SH**S up people who could be flying in the next day or so.

I never imagined this would continue for this length of time, never mind how much longer it might keep erupting? The bits of info i have seen point to the eruptions being slightly less forceful today but i guess that can all change very quickly. The next couple of days will be very interesting should the situation remain the same or worsen.

Im not convinced at all by these “test flights”. They prove very little other than a jet engined plane can buzz around the sky for a brief period of time then land safely. Multiple daily sectors in the contaminated area need a different approach i think. Even if there was no immediate risk to aircraft safety, who,s to say there would be no long term and expensive engine damage associated with flying in these conditions.

This puts things into perspective a little, doesn’t it?

Mother Nature gives us a fleeting glimpse of her fangs, and all we humans can do is stay out of the way until she calms down again.

She’s a stubborn old gal grey that’s for sure, can’t help but love her though. (yes I have been drinking)

This is your opinion vs mine

Yea and yours is wrong, otherwise the airspace would be open. 😉

Suppose it was only a matter of time before this turned into an argument about why flights are grounded, so i will join in 😀

EGPH you are so far off the mark with your statements its untrue. Imagine for a second being the guy (not that it happens that way) who decided, yea sod it lets open the airspace again. All this fuss about a little cloud in the North. Then, a few planes start falling out of the sky because YOU thought all this was a load of BO**OX. Try living with that?

Looks like last few aircraft leaving U.K airspace. Just been following a CO 752 depart Bristol and head South out into the English Channel en-route Newark. Some interesting routings.

Thanks for that link cockerhoop. I wondered if there was anything like that on the net. I have an app for I-PHONE but this is much clearer.

It sure is looking quiet up there. Are we likely to see any effects from this on the ground? i.e cars coated in soot and so on.

Sounds like its expected to get worse depending on what you read!!! Could be carnage if LHR becomes affected. Maybe a very interesting day ahead.

Wasnt there a similar problem about two weeks ago although not as disruptive? Might be the same volcano again? A guy i work with has a relation working ATC, pretty sure he mentioned this to me a couple of weeks ago.

Love that SQ A380 head on shot. I quite like the borders.
