Wouldn’t an answer be to redesign cabins so that locker space was minimal?

I think one airline did ask about a cabin with no overhead storage bins? Maybe FR?

No doubt the SQ crews are efficient if its an at-seat service you want, but its all rather clinical. On the other hand, if you bother to get up and talk to the UA crews when you need something (as opposed to just sit in the seat and expect them to be waiters/waitresses), the UA crews have all been excellent and friendly.

I agree that as good as the SQ cabin crew service is, it can be a little robotic. This, im sure is down to the stringent training they have been through. They are probably scared to offer anything other than a “Singapore Airlines rules of how to be a perfect flight attendant which you must follow to the letter” service. I have come across a few who have been a bit more relaxed, but its certainly not the norm. At least the customer is getting a very consistent service, and a good one at that. Its all a matter of personal opinion.

As for getting up to chat to U.S based airline cabin crew. Not anymore. I once spent a good 2hrs chatting to two UA crew in the rear galley of a 777 on an overnight ORD-LHR. Very nice, and a credit to there employer. Had a right laugh with them. I was going to go and sit down after 10 mins as not to disturb them from there duties, but they insisted a stayed and chatted a bit longer. They said these night flights were really boring so it was nice to chat to a stranger with an interest in flying (granted, this would never happen on an Asian airline). Nowadays, on a U.S airline ive found they dont even like you getting up from your seat, never mind chatting to them in the galley. I guess the FAA makes the rules for them but i find it very knee-jerk. Its a shame really.

Oh yea they are the best. So attentive. A million miles away from those “gum chewing” American cabin crew.

I think its down to the level of respect people treat each other with in Asia. High standards of customer service are the norm.

Mighty pleasing on the eye too 😉

An enjoyable read. I also love the CRJs, although not too keen on the 200s from a passengers perspective. A bit too cramped and i dont like how the windows are so low down making it hard to see out.

Thanks for your posts guys. Appreciate your words.

PeeDee. I got enough miles from this trip for a return flight, U.K-Turkey in Business Class. While my main focus for flying is collecting miles, I still have a massive passion for just being on planes in general. The benefits of understanding and exploiting a Frequent Flyer Programme for more trips on planes is worth its weight in gold for me. If im flying for fun anyway, I may as well get as many extra benefits as I can for no extra hassle.
I can understand your asking though. My friends and family cant quite get there head around what im doing either 🙂

Channel 9 was switched on, which allows you to listen in to ATC as you fly along. As we approached LA we flew direct to the Santa Monica VOR, then left heading 070 along past the Hollywood sign for a visual approach onto 25L.

Back in LA again and I was bushed. Got a few beers in the hotel along with a burger( yea again!!!) and went to bed. With no flights until 8pm the next day I switched off the alarm and drifted off.

    Day five: Tuesday 23rd March.

As I said, my flight back to Zurich wasn’t until 8pm tonight. I made arrangements with the front desk for a late check out, they let me keep the room free of charge until 3pm. I had a slow day by the hotel pool, swimming and soaking up some Cali rays. Easy life….

I took my last trip on the hotel shuttle back to LAX and checked in for my flight home. It was a nice thought to be flying Business Class after all that stuff in coach.

For this last part I will let the pictures do the talking.

“Easy” Airbus above us as we fly over Europe. Nearly home now,
    http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s162/Shawzo/DSC02180.jpg

So that’s almost that. Flew up to MAN soon after arriving in Zurich. I was ready for home now. Nothing happened on the ZRH-MAN. Normal A319 type flight.

I was met at the airport by the Mrs and we crawled home along the M62 in terrible traffic. Home,Bed,sleep.

What an amazing trip. Hard work but very satisfying. Virgin America were the stars of the show and I wish them a profitable future. I will certainly fly them again when im next in the States.

Thanks for reading. Feel free to comment.
    Thanks, Lee

I can confirm it is a Electra, G-LOFC. Usually goes over at 21,000ft drowning my house down! What a great noise to hear!

Thanks very much Danny. What an Interesting aircraft. I will have a look on the net for more info on it.

While on ths subjct of over head traffic, can any one tell me what passes over LBA at about midnight? This isnt every night and at a very high cruise level heading north??

I can’t answer your question but I think I hear the same as you? Sounds like a prop, really low pitch drone? I have been trying to find out about this aircraft for ages. Came to the conclusion it was some kind of mail plane.
Don’t here it so much now as I have moved to a different part of Halifax but always passed over my old house at midnight give or take 5 mins.

At the risk of a BIG flaming I will stick my neck out and say this made me smile. Just listend to the transmisions on the BBC news. Ok, so this should have never happend but I bet it cheered a few pilots up. I’m sure the relevent people will get disciplined over this. When he clears the AeroMexico to go and finishes up with “adios amigo”. Classic.

And just how do you “get her down”??? Once over the runway in the landing configuration with the power fully retarded, there’s not that much can be done to MAKE a plane land if the approach is hot or high, well at least not without risking bending the aeroplane…

Im not questioning the phsyics of flight Andy. My post reflected the fact that as i watched the video i was willing the aircraft down, as i suspect the pilot flying will have been doing also.

I was thinking, come on, get her down, get her down, get her down…Go around Go around, NO WAY dont land. Now im no pilot but that had to be very, very close. Maybe more luck than judgement?

Quite a subjective question as one mans good flight on a certain aircraft with airline A will be different another mans on airline B. Looking at it just from an aircraft point of view I would say

    Best
MD 80/DC9: Just a good, old school aircraft that I enjoy to fly on. Some amazing STEEP takeoffs out of CPH on the SAS MadDogs.
747: Again can’t quite put my finger on it but something special about flying on this airplane. Gracefull.

    Worst:
A340: Poor takeoff and climb performence and just an underwhelming plane to fly on.
A319/20/21: Mundane. Probably flown on too many now, but they seem to lack that certain something. I’m sure there good from an operators piont of view but they have no soul. Guess I’m something of a Boeing fanboy.

Dusseldorf and any of the ones that handle only half a dozen flights a day such as Friedrichshafen.

Yes, nearly forgot and you just reminded me there. Dresden. Very nice little airport with a massive indoor viewing area which seems somewhat wasted on a place with such low traffic numbers. Quite a popular spot though as its Land side. Some nice eateries there and a bar selling VERY strong German Beers 😎 .
