we will see if they will be able to export it (so they have to bid against other competitors like the 35 mm millenium gun, ram etc.)

OTO already sell a year ago some Strales system to Colombia.

Also on the Cavour are 4x SH-3s and “two other smaller helos” one of which can be seen from the pics to be a AW-101.

They are 4 SH-3D NLA for amphibious assault and 2 EH-101 TTH/utility with ramp. From some photo from Marina Militare the newest EH-101 were hosted on the hangar near the aft elevator.

There’re some Lince (LMV) near the hole for foward gun πŸ˜€

The small number of aircraft is due to the lack of fund of AMI, indeed this contract is completely paid by Ministry of Industry, and because there’re 30 MB-339 CD2 delivered since 1997 to 2003 circa and about 60 MB-339A MLU with with even several hours of flying to do.

In the next years is scheduled to replace other 339A with the 346, over the first 15, and move the CD to the Freccie Tricolori

Comparison: Cavour cost the Italians around 1 billion Euro = 0.85 billion GBP, now probably closer to 1 billion GBP.

Cavour cost 1,39 billion of € without SAAM-it/Aster 15 (about 100-150 milion I suppose) because it’s paid with SAMP-T as FSAF program

Italian Air Force Nicknames 1st Tanker ‘I Have a Dream’

    By tom kington
    Published: 17 Jun 10:04 EDT (14:04 GMT)

PARIS – As they wait for their first, much delayed Boeing 767 tanker from Boeing, Italian Air Force officials have borrowed a line from late civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. to nickname the aircraft “I have a dream.” πŸ˜€

The new moniker for the officially titled Italy One was revealed by Italian Air Force deputy chief of staff Gen. Giuseppe Bernardis, who added that Italy’s fourth and final tanker, known as Italy Four, is being referred to as “Yes we can.” :diablo:

“It’s a way of auguring an early delivery,” Bernardis said.

Speaking at the Paris Air Show, Boeing officials said the first tanker, which originally was slated for delivery in 2005, should be ready to undergo a Tender for Acceptance process by the Italian Air Force this summer, following the completion of FAA certification.

Three of the tankers are ready, said Dave Bowman, vice president of tanker programs at Boeing, and a fourth is undergoing modifications. A series of technical problems, including a flutter problem on wing pods, have held up delivery.

Three 767 tankers without wing pods have been delivered to second tanker customer Japan.

Bowman said penalty payments to Italy for late delivery are still under discussion.

Italian Air Force is very angry with Boeing because a 4-years program is late over 4-years and they are without a real tanker since 2 years 😑

I don’t think so the development of AW-149 is a problem becuase it’s on list for Turkey (proposed for co-development) and sure at 95% in Italy.

The problem of NH-90 is the price, too expensive for me, about for 4 bilion of € for 112 helo (56 navy + 60 army (1 lost)). 😑

Our Air Force watch the AW139/149 for replace the AB212 and 12 (+ 3 option) AW-101 for CSAR as replacement of 24/36 HH-3F used as SAR helo.
It’s unclear the choice but Italian Army need about 40 utility helo (I think AW139/149) for replace some AB205/212/214.

The AW-139 is delivered in few unit to Coast Guard (2) and Custom Service (1, Guardia di Finanza) for trial.
The CG think to buy up to 30 AW139(149) CP (high customized helo) for SAR role for replece 9 AB-412

Italy and UK has the same helo-maker, than…
IMHO the AW-149 is the best choice for UK
