Having the hanger underneath the flight deck makes sense to me.

Vittorio Veneto are the development of Andrea Doria class, I think more similar of Haruna

Associate to this poll of SAM, there is the choice of Combat System

    a) SAAM (for MBDA missile) for self defence

    b) SAAM-ESD (Extend Self Defence) (for MBDA missile) for area defence but cheap and less performance of PAAMS for a single Sampson (or equivalent) without LR radar

    c) PAAMS

    d) AEGIS with Spy family radar

    e) other

UK spent a lot of money in PAAMS system, then a better and less expensive choice is SAAM-ESD with SAMPSON MFR, Aster 30 missile and a (semi-)newest short/medium range missile derivate from Aster with the same electronic but a new body for a multi-pack (doublepack o quadpack) compatible with Sylver A-50 or A-43 launcher. I think this is a good investment for UK/France/Italy because I don’t see the advantage of the couple Aster 15 & 30 as the couple ESSM/SM-2. Some Sylver A-70 for Scalp is another good choice.

The other thing to bear in mind is that Oto have specifically been talking about it being adaptable to other calibres. Now admittedly they were primarily meaning scaling up for the 155mm, but scaling down from 127mm to 114.5mm shouldn’t be impossible!

On Vulcano program is involved Italian Army, indeed the program request extended range/guided 155mm ammo for Pzh2000.

No argument there. Looks a very, very good weapon. If it were for a Navy that uses 5″ currently then its a no brainer. Doesnt make a good choice for us for 2 reasons:

For example Japan Maritime SDF use Oto 5″ on its Burke flight 1 and on its newest flight IIA the mk45 62 cal. because OTO haven’t ready the newest 127/64 LW

If you want a General Purpose frigate you can see FREMM GP, 1 127mm as main gun plus a 76mm over (in the middle) the hangars.

… The Italians have talking about a production line for years, & the American attitude has been “Fine – as long as you pay for it”. The Italians have been trying to get other potential European customers to sign up for Italian-built F-35s. So far, only the Netherlands has shown interest, AFAIK. The UK isn’t interested in a production line.

Is more that a talk because on Italian MoD budget there is another bilion of € up to 2047 for logistic support. The final decision is scheduled for year end.
The Italian line is to place in Cameri (see map, probably the job for the factory is already begin), Northern Italy, where is Eurofighter maintenance center.

Last information said the italian line begin with F-35B for Navy (double line with AV-8B+, Taranto/Grottaglie for some year as USMC) and Air Force (AMX of Amendola) and finish with F-35A for replace Tornado

For Italy-Netherlands agreement they buy Italian-build F-35 for engine maintenance and Norway are a potential customer.

Italy spent over 1 bilion of € and have about 3-5%.

Now both Italian Navy and Air Force want F-35B but if Navy want (official) 20-22 B for Air Force is only rumors (someone speak of 37B + 72A). The true problem is budget’s cut but up to 2022…

At this time, with BF-1 on trial and the first 6 B on order, I don’t think so that STOVL will be delete

    Mayport welcomes Italian submarine

Salvatore Todaro The boat will participate in training exercises and joint task force projects.

The conning tower broke through the water at the entrance to the St. Johns River as the lithe boat made its way up the river to Mayport Naval Station.

Inside the 180-foot-by-20-foot tube were about 30 Italian submariners, participants in a training exercise that marks the first time since World War II an Italian submarine has been in U.S. waters.

The sailors received a far warmer welcome than a similar crew might have some 60 years ago. On the agenda: Trips to tourist attractions, sporting events and shopping – activities that, in conjunction with a bevy of joint task force projects, are designed to make closer allies of the two fleets.

When the Salvatore Todaro docked Friday afternoon in the basin at Mayport, the crew members were greeted by a number of U.S. officers, including Cmdr. Ian Pollitt, commanding officer of the USS Klakring, which is hosting the Italian visitors.

“It was the best way we could contribute to the cause,” Pollitt said.

The trip over was the first long-term deployment of the vessel. Typically, said its captain, Lt. Cmdr. Mauro Panebianco, the country’s fleet sticks to operations in the Mediterranean Sea and nearby.

The Todaro will spend the next several days doing joint exercises with the U.S. Navy. As a smaller, diesel-powered boat, the Italian submarine differs significantly from the large nuclear-powered submarine used by the United States.

“The first step was arriving in the U.S.A.,” Panebianco said. “Now I’m sure we make good exercises.”

I’d think more VLS might be a good use of the space, if there’s room below deck. But money . . .

Officially there’s space for 16 vls.

We have a lot money in budget, 47.53 €, for extra “optional” on Doria 😀

Our baby aircraft carrier grow up again?

During the development of the displacement of the project grow up from 15,000 to 27,100 tons full load of final project on 2000.
The official full load displacement is 27,100 tons but last month Fincantieri website, the builder, and one defense magazine report 27,500 tons and today my friend find Orizzonte website, the alliance between Fincantieri (builder) and Finmeccanica (system) for italian naval project, that report 27,910 tons!!! 😀

Cavour grow up 810 tons on 1 month 🙂 now we waiting the 30,000 tons for the ceremony of delivery of combat flag scheduled for april 2009 :p

Now we don’t know which displacement is correct
    – from Italian Navy?
    – from Builder?
    – from naval alliance?

Cavour has a single hangar that can be host 24 MBT, it hasn’t a vehicle deck.

MBT must use the 60 tons side ramp or aft ramp because the deck-edge lift can carry only 30 tons

6 for ASW (ASM version) + 2 for Land Attack (AVT version, “Action Vers la Terre“, “action towards land”)

French AAW FREMM are also know as FREDA (“FREgates de Défense Aériennes“, Air defence frigate)
