    I’ll take this one Cees,

At least 3 Lancaster and 1 Halifax are lost without trace specifically tasked with operations to Oslo Fjord.

Expanding to Lost without trace in the general vicinity gives another 8 Lancasters and 5 Halifax.

Add to this those with no trace who may have reached the area trying to make for Sweden and the list grows.

Way forward depends on whether the crew escaped or died in the crash

For a limited waterway I would start to search the local churchyards for graves as there is a fair chance that at least one of the bodies would have been recovered. Start to tick these off known losses and who are left will give some dates to target.

Thanks for that Ross, seems it could be something to it. The lake is big,and just about 5 minutes flying time away from the Oslofjord, going east…so it could have been that,if it really happened, they were trying to go as far east (aiming for Sweden) as possible… the lake is big enough to put a plane down even going across it,lengthwise it’s several miles long. You can easily see it on a map to the east of Oslo.

Could it have been early 45 instead of 44

    Regards
    Ross

He said it happened in 44,according to my notes. And the old gentleman was sharp as a knife in the mental stakes…his age had not deterred his memory one bit. From what I noted he had not seen anyone come out of it…and it sank through the ice in just a few minutes. But it was at dawns early light, and he would be looking almost against the sun from his angle. And at an approx. distance of half a mile…not easy to see. If someone left the wreck, they would have moved towards the other side of the lake to get to Sweden, too, not towards him. It’s really intriguing.. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Edit: I’ll try to check out some churchyards downstream from where it crashed…but I’m thinking…if they were strapped in for the landing, they might have followed their plane down. If graves are found, they can not be regarded as “Lost without trace”,right…? ๐Ÿ™‚

    DCK

Not a 109 or 110 but a Handley Page Halifax with the serialnumber NA337.
It was recovered from over 250 metres from Lake Mjosa and is now almost fully restored in Trenton, Ontario Canada.
Search this forum for more information. Nowadays depth is not the limiting factor (money probably is).
    Cheers

    Cees

Cees, do you know of any Lancs or Halifaxes that got MIA around the general vincity of Oslo? I’m really curious about the story I was told…

Just out of curiosity… Was there any Lancs or Halifaxes reported as lost over eastern Norway in ’44? I guess if anyone knows it,it must be the clientele here… If so,I need a few diving lessons… :diablo:

From Norway, but still… I heard rumors from a senior citizen I happened to be talking to at a barbecue for elderly people,he had been living in the same area all his life, and he said that a Halifax or Lanc had landed/ditched in the lake below his home (which is called ร˜yeren) early in ’44 after taking Flak (it was smoking badly and one engine seemed to be on fire) in a raid somewhere around Oslo. He said there was lots of big 4-engined bombers in the air that night/morning,and one had landed down at the lake, but the ice was rotten,so it sank in a matter of minutes… He identified it from having twin fins…should be a Lanc or Halifax, then…

Wouldn’t it be cheaper to buy a used Lambo like an older Countach?

Not in Norway… You can get a banger Countach with lots of work needing to be done for about ยฃ 60-65.000….

What are you using for a transaxle? Porsche or ZF?

Neither… No transaxle in the car. I’m mounting the Jag “the right way”,connect it to a modified Dodge Viper T56 gearbox (modified to 5 gears, not 6 and reverse shift pattern) and a custom “gearbox” in front makes me able to have the mainshaft running back below the engine/gearbox combo (custom sump/bellhousing) and into a Toyota Supra rear diff… Closest you can get to the original layout of the car, without buying the actual engine and gearbox… But,we’re OT… ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

RF769: PSRU : Propeller Speed Reduction Unit.

    Of course… Don’t know why I was not thinking…:o

There’s a guy in the US with a drop top Lambo replica stuffed with a BMW V12. Expensive engine.

The Jag’s final cost won’t be cheap either, but then again it will have twice the hp of either the BMW or the real thing…:diablo:

I do remember hearing rumours in the community of a Mossie lurking in the brambles off the threshold of Hurn Airfield, complete with merlins. Anyone substantiate that rumour?

If that would be reality,I would consider that what wet dreams are made of….

A stroker Jag V12 will do that? What about a PSRU?
BTW, RF769, what do you do with your Jag engines in Norway? Auto or airplane? You sound like a Jag lover – my first one was a ’67 Euro-spec E-Type/XK-E roadster, one of the last of the covered headlight Series 2s that I picked up new at the factory in Coventry when I was stationed in Germany oh so long ago. The most frustrating part was driving back to our base in Germany with no-speed-limit roads but limited in top speed by the break-in rpm of 2500!!!! It redlined at 5500!

Avi,I think you have to let me in on what you meant that the stroker Jag would do,I think I fell out of it about there. And PSRU? Unknown term for me (but then again I’m not having English as my native language).

Break-in procedures are in many instances unfortunately made by the accountants, not the engineers…You could have rev’ed it,and it would have survived.. ๐Ÿ™‚

This Jag engine is becoming a stroker (with billet 4-valve heads) that will go into a replica. Not a Spit, unfortunately, but a Lamborghini. I just fancy V12’s,as “Gentlemen can not travel with less”… and Mossies. ๐Ÿ™‚

Mark had a knack of talking to a lot of people I think,at least he did so every time he was here. Met him and talked to him on several occasions. I remember one incident when he had flown Anders Sรฆthers P-51D from Sweden, and arrived early. When he had parked the Mustang and got out,he called Anders and said: “Hi Anders,it’s Mark. Do you have some spare change?” We could hear Anders reply “Sure, how come?”. And Mark replied “Because I’m standing in a field in Sweden,I just belly-landed your Mustang here and need money to get home”… The silence on the phone was deafening… ๐Ÿ˜€

Stuart, isn’t the Jag V12 kind of heavy compared to an LS Chevy?]

In fact the Jag V12 isn’t that heavy… about 220 kgs complete in road trim. The nice fact about it is that you have so much room in the crankcases that you can up the stroke a full 20mm,and bore it 6mm. So from having an engine with Bore 90 and Stroke 70,giving 5.344 liters you can have 96 x 90. Which is 7.817 liters… Or if that’s not enough, they have been pushed to 98 x 94 with deck plates on the block… That’s 8.5 liters.

Or just go here: http://www.falconerengines.com/prod04.htm …that is,if the budget allows.. ๐Ÿ™‚
