Before the taxi a couple of weeks ago, the last time the Vanguard was run was 13 December last year, but that was due to lack of a Ground Power Unit for the past few months. Usually, it was about once a month, maybe less in the winter. If they are to be run again, it won’t be run for a while now as the ground and surroundings need a lot of work done.

Few more:
A couple of pics of the Vanguard and VC10 on the runway for the last time, and the Vanguard being taken over the bridge today:
How dare you call it French!!!
Yep. Its the Vanguard with the VC10 about 10 foot behind it, at Brooklands. The Vanguard was pulled out to the runway last Saturday when it made its last ever taxi runs, and the VC10 was pulled that onto the runway yesterday. Both aircraft are sitting on the runway, where they first few 43 and 40 years ago respectively, for the last time. Today the Varsity and Viscount were moved into the carpark with the Vanguard planned for tomorrow and VC10 maybe Sunday, but more likely to be Monday, (although the plan does seem to change every two minutes). The Concorde from Filton is due to arrive Saturday afternoon/evening, so the museum will be open late.
Interesting few days.
Basically, the Vanguard has to be moved into the museum. The land that it is on now has been bought by Damlier-Chrysler, and the Vanguard, along with the VC10, will be moved into what is now the car park at the museum, first week in June. Due to close proximity of other aircraft, the surface it will be on and what is positioned behind it, it may result in no more engine runs, but will have to wait a couple of weeks to see how it all works out.

Yes, and if we get enough speed up then maybe a short flight along the runway. No, what I meant is if we get permission from the landowners we may do a taxi, if we don’t, we may only do an engine run.
Joe, and any others, I will try to find out nearer the end of the week what is suppost to be happening and post it on here, but I guess nothing will be absolutely certain until all the engines are running.
Steve
Sorry about the no engine run, but the museum didn’t bother to sort out fire cover for us. If we get fire cover for next week we will try to do an engine run, or if we get permission from the new landowners we may do a taxi instead, or both.
Steve
Yes, G-APEP (Superb) is the last complete Vanguard surviving out of 44 built. To my knowledge the are 2 nose sections about, G-APEJ (Ajax) at Brooklands, and another at East Midlands.
Steve
Close proximity to other aircraft,
What it going to be behind the Vanguard,
Surface that the Vanguard is on (crushed concrete).
Any of the above may be reasons it cannot be run once it has been moved. I have not seen a final plan of where all the airliners are going, or what type of surface it is on (at the moment it is just crushed concrete). There will certainly not be room to taxi it again, but we are keeping our fingers crossed we may still be able to run the engines.

Hi all,
Thanks very much for the info, next you will tell me who is flying them!
Couple of small points I was wondering about. On the top photo of F4490, it has something quite large coming out the back of the rudder, what is this, something like a balance horn? Also, any idea what happened to the aircraft when they were retired from service, I take it they were just scrapped in the 1930’s unless anyone knows any different.
Cheers
Steve
There is no Antoinette at Brooklands. There is a Demoiselle that can taxi which was built in the 1990’s by Julian Aubert, so maybe this is what you are thinking of.
Also, wasn’t the Shuttleworth’s Blackburn monoplane used in the film on the ground. I know its original, not built for the film, so was this the only original aircraft used?
Steve
The land the Vanguard and VC10 are on is now owned by Damlier Chrysler, so the aircraft will be moving soon. The Viking, Varsity, Viscount, Vanguard VC10, 1-11 and Concorde will all be moving into what is now the gravel, overflow carpark, between where the Varsity has been and the banked race track, and between the acoustics building and river if you are familier with the site.
The Viking is still being restored in the Wellington hangar, and will join the other aircraft later. Concorde will hopefully be coming this summer and I understand that a building will go up almost immediately for that, or once we raise the £1 million. Think we will be waiting many years to see the others undercover, but it is planned to put a large roof over them. Don’t know whether a ‘normal’ hangar would fit over them all. Not sure if it has been finally decided what the building will look like, but I’ve been told it may have a glass front to it at least, and maybe more than just the front. When I mentioned the Eden project I said it may be similar to that to look at, but it must have a number of alterations to suit our purpose, so it doesn’t get too hot and humid in there. These are only plans at the moment and are likely to keep changing until anything is built.
D-C have said they will supply us with a carpark and grass runway on their land.

Hi Ant,
I believe this is the long term plan. I’m sure I mentioned to you before about all the airliners being put together, Viking, Varsity, Viscount, Vanguard, VC 10, BAC 1-11 and Concorde (fingers crossed), I think the latest plan is to have a building, similar to that of the Eden project in Cornwall. This may be done in stages as money is raised, starting with Concorde (think the contract may say the it has to be kept undercover, same with the Viking that BA still own I think which is still in the main hangar).
This type of building will keep the elements off the aircraft, but also allow large amounts of natural light in which is good for the preservation of the aircraft and for the public.

Airbedane,
Think the shows are great, not been to many better places than OW. Think it would be a shame if it all becomes too commercialised, ruin the lovely quiet atmosphere the place has, it what sets it apart from Duxford, Biggin etc.
Personally I would like to see a more original engine on the Boxkite, (Gnome 50hp is it?). Sure there aren’t too many of these engines lying about anymore, but if you could get hold of one be interesting to see what difference it make in performance. Don’t know if or when Blackburn due for strip down, but be nice if engine could be put on Boxkite for a while when work is being done, guess it would require too much work to modify Boxkite for that but just a thought.
I think with Shuttleworth, more than any other airshow you get the real aviation enthusiast there, and it may be nice for one of the aircraft not flying in the show to be placed public side of the fence so people can get a very close look around it- may require too many people looking after it though to make sure kiddies don’t poke their fingers through it etc. Alternatively, have one from another museum there to get a close look at, with its own team to speak to the public, possibly steps to get a peak in the cockpit or something. I’m thinking of things like WW1 aircraft or similar where few people have had the chance to have a close look at one, and would be able to see more detail of the aircraft which you can’t get close enough to see on the flightline or in the hangar. An original aircraft or possibly an accurate replica would be good to see.
Last thing is more perks for SVAS members. Shuttleworth has a unique collection of aircraft and on non-event days it may be nice to have a gathering of the members, looking at a couple of aircraft in the collection. Decide on a couple of aircraft to take out, have a good detailed showing around of the aircraft, possibly display it, maybe lectures on what they are like to fly, and look after engineering wise. I think members might be keen to learn more about the aircraft. Sure it would mean a small rise in membership prices, but I’d be willing to pay it, and more people may join up to be members.
As I said originally though, Shuttleworth is a superb place and I wouldn’t like to see a great deal of change there- its not needed as far as I can see, its still the best around.
Steven
One very last thing Andy, get flying the aircraft again this year, been missing your displays!
Cheers Mark,
Thought it was something along those lines.
