Fury sighted briefly returning to Hurn at 1230 today. Anyone see the outward flight?
Can I claim the coconut?

Great links- particularly like the Silver City “J” Thanks.:)
Also remember my pal and I getting soaked by torrential rain on the return trip by pedal cycle up Winchester Road. The stuff of memories!
Once again, many thanks..

“Did’nt Aviation Traders at Southend have something to do with the Superfreighter seem to recall they produced the centre sections or something?”
I think you’re right. Googled Aviation Traders article by John Meyer whose father William Meyer was an inspector there.
Bristol Freighter wing section manufactured for Air Charter apparently. Thanks Old F.

Water logged grass killed off Portsmouth Airport- never had a concrete one.
Round The Bend by Nevil Shute(1951) featured an Airtruck, a twin engined cargo plane but ficticious, I think. The Bennett/Transavia of similar name bore no similarity. Mr Shute too much of a gentleman to promote his own Airspeed products, unless nothing comparable of course. Just going to read it again……
RJB 🙂
The Stinson could be confused with a Lysander in a darkened hangar. Just had to look up G-AFVT and have a look for myself! Nice recollections.
Useful info on the Bristols’ parentage thanks. By British, I suppose the stretch for Silver City Airways, although fulfilling a market need, gave the appearance of being a bit of a compromise.
I concede that we weren’t the only ones designing this type of aircraft at the time.
Any Mk32 photos at Eastleigh to pander to a nostalgia wallow?
By the way did the Hercules use a Koffman style cartridge start? Seem to remember a large explosion and black smoke….

Great archive photos which really flesh out the rather tentative first posting. Thank you very much indeed. Strange, haven’t had a sighting since the hare started inspite of the excellent weather which might have tempted JB into the air. Roll on the 27th then. A proverbial coconut for the first reported sighting?
Cheers

Hi Cliff
The impromptu display was a few years back in the Horndean/Clanfield area (I guess). If your ear gets attuned to the sound of the Centaurus (very distinctive) – it can be heard through our conservatory roof- then it can be found flying steadily up the west side of the A3 about once every 4 weeks, the next said to be Saturday 27/10, weather permitting, and flying back as well!
Happy spotting.

Fury FB.11
Fury FB.11 it is then and very handsome too! Thanks Everyone for their input and yes have enjoyed my early forays into the forum- ‘been thinking of other Centaurus powered subjects too-must get a life! A trip to Bournemouth beckons….
PS) Fury/Sea Fury- the latter has folding wings? whereas the former doesn’t? Is that correct? Ron
Mystery Tempest/Sea Fury
Hi Ant
Brilliant! Thanks very much indeed, that clinches it! Guy at the club was very helpful and put me on to the CAA site (I’m new to this). Could write to the owner with a request …. but sure he is aware of the enthusiasts in his flight path. Can recognise that Centaurus anywhere!
regards
Ron (RJB)
Mystery Tempest/Sea Fury
Followed up with a call on the flying club at Hurn( Bournemouth International) who confirmed not based there, apparently. CAA web site GINFO does give details on G-CBEL which does tie in with the flight path. Maybe an aerobatic performance over Cowplain, Waterlooville would nail it! Live in hope…. RJB:)
Mystery Tempest/Sea Fury
Reckon you’ve cracked it! What a stunning example! Any other ideas from the Forum? Now I know the livery the number 🙂 361 might just be picked out with the bins on a clear day. Very many thanks.. RJB
Hunter XF509
