SAAF Cessna 185’s

The South African Air Force Cessna 185’s have had a long and interesting career, having first arrived during May 1962 to replace the Auster AOP. The first batch was for 24 Cessna 185A’s. A further 12 Cessna 185D’s arrived during 1965. Two smaller batches of Cessna 185E’s followed 4 during 1967 and 5 during 1968. They started out being Army aircraft allocated to 42 Army Air Reconnaissance. The aircraft was used during the Bush War from the start. Once SWAPO started entering Namibia(SWA at the time.), in 1966, a Cessna was sent to Windhoek. During June 1967 these aircraft were seconded to the South African Police, as this was still seen as being a police operation. Seven Cessna 185’s flew to Gwelo (Zimbabwe, then Rhodesia) in September 1967, where they became heavily involved with Rhodesian Operations. 1968 saw a further five aircraft being seconded to the Portuguese for reconnaissance and communication flights for the Portuguese based in Eastern Angola. On the 1st October 1968 these aircraft reverted to the SAAF and although now in storage, they remain on SAAF strength to this day. Some having been sold in 1997. Due to the nature of there low level operations, a number were lost in accidents with only one(#739) being shot down by a SAM on 25 November 1975 in Central Angola. Efforts are still being made to have the remains of Capt Taljaard, Lt’s Williamson and Thompson returned to South Africa.
The route taken for SA Express Dash-8 delivery flights was;
Toronto; St John in Newfoundland; Santa Maria in the Azores; SAL Island; Abidjan; Libreville and then Johannesburg.
I guess the Angolan flight would have been much the same during the first sector.
Many thanks MSphere, exactly what I was after 😀
Anybody?
Some more…..

Some I took when the MiG-29 was show casing in South Africa. A Russian fighter at an Israeli designed base in SA, who would have thought?

Although I haven’t visited the new location, I can assure you that this museum is well worth the visit. Lots of interesting WWII American info and photo’s. Maggie and the team have done a great job!
Now my “surprise” is gloom and doom? 😮 I was asked a question and I answered it honestly. Believe it or not, moderators are allowed opinions which were actually posted as just that! My opinion. I sincerely hope that you are right however. The fact remains that the Museum is still facing a move and the associated problems. Hence my original “surprise” at taking on such a project at this time. I didn’t say that it couldn’t be done, I said that I was “surprised” that they had taken on such a project:confused:
If you really cared about these museums then you would understand my concern and you would show an interest on how they plan to deal with it.
You seem to have your own little “agenda”, so I’ll leave you to it.
For those who are interested in the actual project, the initial plan is to move the Nimrod as close as possible to the Vulcan and then to extend the museum fence around it.
I agree that would be a problem, but Coltishall is so much better! Starting from scratch would not be acceptable these days I think. Not in Norfolk anyway. I just think a plan could have been made to fix up one of the two into a competive airport before phasing the other out. One can dream:D
However, we digress….
Is this a record, speculation that an aircraft will be scapped less than 72 hours after its arrival at a museum!!!!!!!!!!!
I should imagine that the City of Norwich Aviation Museum will have considered development around their museum site long before the Nimrod was even considered.
Perhaps every forum member should leap into their cars, roar off to Norwich and fill their memory cards in the next few days!! No doubt CNAM would welcome the income.
I did say if it could not be moved! Do calm down dear chap. One hopes that the Museum has a plan as the new location is still under discussion as far as I know. Hence my “surprise”. FUNDS boy, think about it!
Unfortunately the locals ain’t airport friendly! Coltishall would have been a better location for the airport IMHO.
your basis for this claim?
Just a minor detail of a road being built through the current location!
Museums location not too certain, if she can’t be moved later she will have to be scrapped.
I saw her arrive. Did a nice fly past before landing. Still amazed at the choice of new home:confused:
