The Angolan MiG-21 C340 in SA museum is a bis, not an MF!
Well spotted, you are of course quite correct!
Also, you say the plane is in a museum now, but was this plane not delivered to Israel and used as a testbed and demonstator for the MiG-21 Lancer – an upgraded MiG with Israeli avionics and equipment, did the Israelis send it back to South Africa when they were done with it?
The SAAF Museum MiG-21Bis was never used by Israel and was never sent to Israel. Israel has had access to airworthy examples, so they have never required it either.
I don’t seem able to access the original site mentioned but from the
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of…lot_defections list.
The Angolan MiG-21Bis mentioned, did not defect. It was a navigational error.
Missing from the list is;
Lt. Adriano Bomba who defected to South Africa from Mozambique in a MiG-17. After evaluation it was returned by road to Mozambique. This happened on 8th July 1981.
On 16th August 1982 Senior Aircraftsman Mark Jeffries defected from Zimbabwe to South Africa in a Reims Cessna 337 known locally as the “Lynx”.
On 14 January 1994, the Chief of the Lesotho Air Wing together with other colleagues fled to South Africa in four helicopters.

The other option at the time was also the BAC deal involving the Mirage IV fitted with Rolls-Royce Spey engines, now that is one I’d have liked to have seen 😀

The U.K. actually had signed the contracts and some of the first -K’s were on the line when they cancelled the order in 1968. The primary reason, as mentioned above, was cost in the eyes of the then Labour government which did have something of a valid point seeing as the F-111 program had been severly curtailed and modified.
Instead of either the TSR-2 or the -111K, the RAF began receiving the first of 46 Buccaneer S2B aircraft in 1969 as direct Canberra replacements under the same requirement………ironically after they had largely rejected the aircraft a decade earlier.
Thanks JoeinTX, I had forgotten about the Bucc !
-Wasn’t as good as the cancelled TSR-2
I gather that it came after the TSR-2 cancellation, so that wasn’t a factor.
I suppose cash would make sense, as the F-111 cost’s certainly went up.
Hello
That Cessna 337 Linx of Rodesia looks very cool with thouse gunpods in the upper center wing. First time i seen these variant, do they come with these variat or the Rodesia air force armed them with the guns?
Rafa
Due to the Arms Embargo the aircraft were bought as civilian aircraft for the “Malagasy Fisheries Surveillance Company”, once safely in Rhodesia, the Rhodesians fitted the twin Browning , 303 machine guns above the wing.
AS332L Super Puma with eight fatalities and eight missing.
Not a good time for the industry.:(
Condolances to those immediately involved and my thoughts go out to those who have to keep on going over the North Sea with this on their minds.
