    So this G-YMMM has the dubious distinction of being the first in service write off for the 777?

    Would this clasify as a hull loss? That phrase strikes me more as something to describe a destroyed aircraft.

    From the FAA memorandum,19 Jan;

    The airplane is considered a hull loss

    Some info which may interest;
    Boeing 777-200, Serial number 30314, G-YMMM
    Delivered to BA 31 May 2001 and had accumulated 22046 hours and 3181 cycles.
    Powered by two Rolls-Royce Trent 895 engines which were last overhauled about a year ago at Derby.

    Training aircraft fly again after accident

    Training aircraft fly again after accident
    Date: 28 January 2008

    The following is a rough translation of an article that appeared in the Beeld newspaper:

    By Erika Gibson

    The airforces’ Pilatus Astra training aircraft can fly again.

    The airforce has announced that the flight safety review that temporary withdrew the aircraft from service was withdrawn yesterday.

    According to the airforce, they would not have lifted the precautionary measure if there was any associated risk.

    One of the aircraft was in involved in the accident last week in which Lt. Col. Chris Meiring (58) died.

    The remaining 30 Astras in the operational ‘pool’ were grounded shortly thereafter so that they could be technically inspected for any potential faults.

    The precautionary measure is usually used if there is any doubt as to the precise cause of an accident.

    The temporary withdrawal can also be performed so that the investigation team can determine the preliminary causes after the accident.

    The official board of investigation then performs the full investigation.

    Meiring crashed shortly after take-off when he was on the way to AFB Langebaanweg where the aircraft was to undergo maintenance. The aircraft crashed after rolling.

    In such a situation, it would have been dangerous to use the ejection seat, as the seat could shoot into the ground.

    It is understood that the seat was found outside the wreck and that he may have used the ejection seat.

    He was attended at the scene, but died shortly thereafter.

    According to informers, indications are that structural or engine problems could have led to the accident.

    From the unofficial SAAF site.

    The SAAF had them from 20 October 1941 until 1944. The colour scheme was dark earth and mid-stone upper surfaces with azure underneath.

    SAAF Mirage F1’s had it and the Cheetah + Gripen have this together with a diamond shape to create a sort of “reverse” delta wing.

    Its not RAF Wattisham any more, its just Wattisham Airfield and its run by the Army. the only RAF there are a few air traffic staff and the 22sqn rescue flight.

    Air Traffic is provided by SERco. 22 SQN “B” Flight is there and some sort of logistic’s set up but I can’t remember what they call themselves.

    The RAF list the Puma as capable of carrying 16 troops

    (source: Sikorsky website)

    Maybe in the days before all the extra kit was added and without considering Hot ‘n High conditions, but 16 is a dream for today’s RAF Puma’s.

    Smith remained an MP until 1988. When he retired, he and his wife, who died in 1994, were allowed to live on in Zimbabwe, unharmed and unharassed.

    That part is not correct, Mugabe threatened to have Ian Smith prosecuted for genocide amongst other things.

    Since his ill health began, Ian Smith lived with his widowed stepdaughter Jean in Cape Town, South Africa, until he died on 20 November 2007.

    A great man and a true gentleman. History has proven his fears to be correct, betrayed by a country that he fought to protect during WWII and which created the mess in the first place. May he find eternal happiness with his beloved wife who passed away in 1994. RIP.
