It’s a fairly sharp pic Rab but IMHO you need a longer exposure time, I’d guess it’s a hand held shot also?
Best bet is to get yourself a tripod, remote etc, then balance the tripod/camera against the fence, and muck about with the exposure time, what type of camera you got?

Am I right that lately PIK has been getting a whole lot of An-225 flights? Photos of the beast seem to be uploaded here quite often lately. Any reason for that? (not that I mind, always great shots)

A month or so ago there were 4 or 5 flights routing to Memphis IIRC, not sure where this one was from/to mind you?

Thought so:) What happens to the runway lights when if they hit them or go over them?

    James

At PIK the runway edge lights are on stalks, except of course where the links join the runway and at the turning area at the 31 end.

    Nice shots there.
    3 quick questions;
    1. Who/what is the D9/MD8x on the second shot?

    2. Is the VS 744 training? Forgive me on this one, didn’t think VS had flights out of GLA:o

    3. How long have Emirates been using the 773ER rather than the A332?

Follow up to #3, How long did the A332 last before the 773ER took over?

1 – US Navy I believe, and that shot was taken lastweek.

2 – The Virgin 747 was operating a schedule to Orlando, it operated during June/July and October and is back April/June/July/October next year IIRC.

3 – The 777 has been in use around 18 months now, I think.

In light of the 1p including tax offer on Ryanair.com, I’m planning a quick day in Prestwick for some shots. I’ve seen some really good shots on here, I just wondered if someone could give me an idea if it’s possible to get to the locations from the terminal? I think there is a mound infront of the taxiway that seems quite popular and seems to be where most people go? And is the lighting good for most of the day?

    Thanks in advance!

Ok, here’s some pics from each spot I’ve mentioned –

A few from the “crash gate” 5 mins walk to the right of the Terminal, not the best of pics some of them as I just picked a month and uploaded them and not great quality, but they’ll give you a fair idea what to expect though –

The ‘mound’ is about a 15 minute walk away, when you come out of the Terminal walk straight ahead and through the car park in front of you and follow the dual-carriageway to the left, at the roundabout just carry straight on, you’ll then walk past some playing fields on your left and at the set of traffic lights just past these, take a left and continue past the graveyard on your left, just past here take a left again and it’ll take you to the access gate for ATC and a flying club, the “big” mound is to the right, the “wee” mound to the left.
The “big” mound gives you a fantastic view over the landings and departures on r/w 31 and any a/c that roll long on landing on r/w 13, for r/w 13 departures the “wee” mound is probably better as it’s closer to where most a/c rotate on take-off.
At these locations the sun is behind you most of the day.
Another good location if r/w 13 is in use (not very often) is about a 5 minute walk from the Terminal, turn right instead of left and walk along the footpath adjacent the dual-carriageway past the fuel farm and a cargo shed and just past the shed on the right there’s a ‘crash gate’ with probably the closest distance you’ll get to a taxying aircraft at a Scottish airport, across the road there is the entrance to a Caravan park with a bridge over the main Ayr-Glasgow railway line which gives you elevated shots of landings/departures on r/w 13, but if you do cross here be very carefull as the road can be very busy.
No shelter at all at the mounds but there is a bus shelter not far from the r/w 13 spot.
Frequencies are 118.15 for the Tower and 120.55 for Approach.
PIK can be hit and miss, some days little of interest, other days you’ll not believe your luck, today for instance there was a Libyan An124, the Dreamlifter passes through about once a month, most days you’ll see at least 1 CLX 747, 1 x Evergreen 747, a couple of Atlas 747’s, and quite a few RYR’s.
Hope this helps, if you need any more info PM me.
I’ll post a few pics from each location shortly to give you an idea of the views from each spot..

Nice one Woody, I don’t think it lands from that direction very often.

in reply to: Taking camera gear to the States… advice please? #524338

Does anybody have tips for taking a bulk of camera gear to the USA?

I’m going to the Mustangs and Legends airshow and plan to take my SLR plus two lenses including the big 100-400mm Canon lens. I am a bit hesitant to put the big lens into my suitcase and have it thrown about by the luggage handlers. But at the same time I am worried I might get trouble taking it onboard. With all the terrorist fears of recent years and all I don’t know if they’ll let me carry three pounds of steel in my hand luggage. I don’t want to be facing a “lose your lens or lose your flight” dilemma at the hand luggage check…

    Any advice?

NB. I’ll be travelling with a Canadian airline. Not sure if they’re less “paranoid” than their US counterparts?

You should have no problems at all, I’m just back from the US flying GLA-PHL-DCA and return and absolutely no hassles.
Before I went I purchased a Lowepro CompuDayPack which allowed me to take my Laptop – Canon30D -100-400 Lens – 75-300 Lens – 28-55 Lens and a small HD Digital Camcorder as well as all the other bits and pieces that’s required.
When I went in May I reluctantly had to put my Laptop in my case due the UK’s rediculous ‘one cabin bag rule’ which prompted me to buy the new bag which allows you to take all the gear I mentioned in the bag above, and It’s dimensions are within most if not all airline’s hand baggage size allowance.

Nice angle on the 747, I’ll be giving that a go now that I’ve got my 100-400 :diablo:
