Reading about this chap’s various attempts at killing his friends I suspect that the squadron was glad to see him go. Reminds me very much of that USAF Colonel who crashed that B52 some years back

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1994_Fairchild_Air_Force_Base_B-52_crash

he was notorious for these sorts of dangerous stunts. If people want to kill themselves in spectacular ways then it’s probably their free choice but taking others with them against their will is just a little over the top IMHO.

There is one famous live recording of the Berlin Philharmonic playing very late in the war with the sound of an allied air raid heard in the background.

Malcolm: A long story, dealt with over several threads. …

Thanks for that Laurence – I hadn’t been following the later developments after the aircraft had been identified.

Without wishing to appear totally befuddled I thought that human remains were found near the P40 – or did I imagine that.

Not exactly a new policy but just a change of the way dissenting opinions are treated. There are just so many holes that can be plugged before something completely disintegrates and I’m afraid the Nikumaroro hypothesis passed beyond that stage years ago.

80 years young and still unequaled for sheer perfection of form.

The sale, taking place in Sutton and organised by Cambridgeshire auctioneers Cheffins, even includes a full size replica Spitfire.

The aircraft, which has a fully instrumented cockpit and stands on an undercarriage,

And here I always thought Spitfires had paws – well my cat does 😀

Hmmm … is there another dispute in which honour may only be served by a duel. If so then I hope the duelists follow the Code Duello and Woodcock their pistols when instructed 😀

I first saw the movie Memphis Belle on a 747 high over India on a trip to the ME. The airline company seemed to have acquired a copy that deleted the crash scene. 😀

Another magnificent achievement that is slipping further back into history. The NASA astronauts of the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo missions were a breed apart. Dr Mitchell’s death leaves very few alive now. It is saddening to think that after those great days we are still just footling around in low Earth orbit. I realise the cost and time involved but I would so much rather that our collective governments’ money was spent on this great research than endlessly poured into the bottomless well of defense spending caused by our internecine squabbling.

The really good thing about buried aircraft is that regardless of where you dig the first hole you will by gradually expanding the hole eventually find them and be proven correct. This is because of the inescapable truth that the surface of the planet is a finite space so that result is inevitable.

But it would be nice however if the diggers didn’t have to rely solely on this rather hit or miss approach and instead were able to produce the buried object(s) where they claimed they were in the first place. After all that is where they argue stridently that their “research” says these objects are – not somewhere else. Because if they were somewhere else then the “research” should have told them that at the beginning.

Accordingly finding an object where your research has said it will be is guaranteed to be accepted as showing good research and proper investigatory method than the haphazard approach of just enlarging the parameters of the search until the inevitable happens. That’s probably the reason that the hunt for buried objects tend to arouse the sceptic in most thinking people.

It is akin to finding a cure for the common cold when you went into the supermarket to look for a can of baked beans. 😀

    For Beermat:
The Fabian Society is a British socialist organization whose purpose is to advance the principles of socialism via gradualist and reformist effort, rather than by revolutionary overthrow but there seems to have been ‘mission creep’ over the years and a modified form of communism is now the aim. The spin used by the BBC has been commented on by many and there are a number of websites (such as Biased BBC) that list their more blatant efforts. Sorry to bring politics into the mix but I detest the dumbing down that occurs.

Oh we get the same tired ill-informed and basically silly remarks about the Australian Broadcasting Corporation made out here. They are as usual made by ignorant people who seem to think that life is perfect if you are a self-made squillionaire or one of their hangers on. The sort of people who don’t believe in a fair society because it prevents them from milking others to their heart’s content. The BBC and ABC cater to a broad reach of opinions and taste and so of course at some time some person is going to feel offended – big deal, at least the diversity of views is being offered. Just listen to the commercial broadcast media if you want real dumb. Better the BBC or the ABC than what passes for programming originality on the commercial broadcast media.

The truth of the matter is probably as explained earlier that perhaps the announcer was unfamiliar with how “Mk” should be pronounced. So I guess that my earlier comment about ignorance should also be expanded to include the ignorance of some people who can’t understand that there are people in the world who don’t have the same encyclopedic knowledge of some pissant historical event as they do.
