Hampden bottom left just back from the Lanc bomb doors?
I would love to reserve a seat as well please, especially if it has an Imperial Airways plate, family connection to those halcyon days, please save one for me an pm me the details of who I need to contact and how to pay, cheers, simon
I bet that both the prop and parachute were “supplied” by the RAF to a photographer who took them along to a nice field somewhere where he had arranged some nice clean children for a preconceived propaganda photoshoot and not a single pilot or crashed aircraft were anywhere near the scene. The prop at it’s base looks perfect, the children have obviously been through parachute training to know how to fit it and it all seems to “convenient” too me!!!
Watch on a big screen, sit comfortably and from 2min 30s get your sick bags ready!!!!

In album 1, picture no 43 seems to show a no canopy and a very tall Spit pilot and also in pic 61 Spit call sign November doesn’t seem to have a canopy either!!! I have enlarged them but there is no sign of the distinctive forward angle of the canopy front frame. Was is unusual for Spits to fly deliberately with out a canopy? I have not seen this before.
Hi Katrina, my thoughts are with you on this one, I am in the fortunate position of still having my father but as he is now in his late 70’s and although in good health the inevitable is not too far away. He spent over 55 years in the aviation business, only three years RAF and the rest in civil and this is where part of my dilemma will arise. Military aviation has the pull, no point denying it but when it comes to the civil stuff, and there are some fantastic supporters restoring and maintaining civil aviation history, for some reason war wins over the actual form of aviation that has opened up the world to so many in it.
So what will I do with my inheritance? Of course I will keep some but the reality is I wouldn’t be able to keep it all and when I say there is a lot I mean LOADS. He has everything from 1950’s unused headed company note paper to an accurate reproduction of his 1960s company vehicle. At least one copy of every timetable, baggage tags, notes, movement books, load sheets, models and models and models, the list is endless. I would love it to be collectively saved for future research by a recognised museum, if it was military I sure it would be easy, because it’s “civil” I am not so sure.
The Duxford guys do a great job with their civil aircraft but I for one think there should be a national Civil aviation collection/museum/centre but would it get the support, I am not so sure. I love duxford and what happens there but it always seems odd that at the Imperial WAR Museum we have some of the best preserved “civvies”, but then if they weren’t there would they have even survived to be preserved? and please can someone tell my why such a unique aircraft as the Ambassador is outside after all that fantastic work, it’s rarer than most of the inside aircraft yet because the Aviation Society I assume have to accept what’s available she has to suffer outside!!!!!
Sorry, ranting a bit but I too will have this day to face and would like to see our “civil aviation” history given a bit more prominence when it comes to national preservation and the archives of the men and women who helped open up the world to us all in post war aviation so it can be preserved for future research and celebration.
Same story, different paper:

Darwin, We did the story first then sold it on the the Daily mail and other national press( I am a photo journalist by the way). Normally when I go and visit couples to photograph their extra long wedding celebrations I am there for about 15mins max, I was with Steve and Maureen for nearly 2 hours and I wasn’t doing much of the talking!!!!!
Geoff, I had a chance to have a quick glance at his log books, from the top of my head I can recall Tiger Moth, Harvard, Vultee, Stearman, Oxford, Wellington, Manchester, Lancaster, Chipmunk.
Thirty ops in Lancasters, and on one page at the end of his first tour it listed the names of the various crew he that had flown with him and against quite a few of them in red, DEAD or POW, sort of brings it home when you see it in his own hand at the actual time it was happening. I can’t give you their contact details for obvious reasons but if you can provide me with your details and reason for contacting them I will pass it on to them and they can decide if they would like to talk too you, hope you understand.
That’s a great idea, I will sort some way of recording it and when done will upload a link, they are a great couple but boy can they talk, I may have to make sure that our ground/air chap has control of the transmit button!!!!!
And Seething being the other one and probably busier than Shipdham.
Wulfie, hope to be leaving Seething between 09.00 and 09.30 so hope to be over by 11.00, thanks for the NOTAM shout, not checked them yet!!!!!! Hope to see you tomorrow, Simon:):):)
My home airfield in Norfolk is fly able and i hope to come over in my Jodel so if you see bright red, white and black Jodel G-BDBV arrive or parked up say HI, weather is looking good if cool and I better make sure any purchases don’t put me over my max t/o weight!!!!!
Guildman, you may want to call Rex first before a visit, they are not always there at what we would consider normal working hours and often very busy when they are there so I am sure if you wanted to view setting up an appointment first would help you. Also if you are not familiar with Seething be aware of the care needed to cross the end of the runway to gain access to the hangers.
For those who want to try and get some images of Colt before it goes act soon, I now understand it has all been sealed, signed and the end is in sight for the runway, the council HAVE got it and I fear the worst for the base. sad times as another Battle of Britain station goes.
I love it too, but already having a 1950’s boat and a Similar age Jodel D11a to keep up in the air it is just one project too many for me. I have just noticed the EBay thread so sorry about the separate listing, noted for the future, cheers, Simon
Sunderland float “boat” on EBAY!!!!! 5 days to run.
Nothing to do with me, one of my fellow Classic Motor Boat Association members spotted it, it must be a bit special, what do you think?
