Err, No, he put it into a spin. That was the intended flight path.
Looking at the footage and that of his earlier routines, the first part of the manoeuvre was the planned inverted spin.
However during the recovery the aircraft then entered a second, unintended, upright spin from which there was insufficient height to recover.
A very sad loss of a talented pilot.
Thanks 91Regal for the pic of ‘FSC. Yes the Tipsy is a delight to fly, and surprisingly efficient for only 62 hp.
Having an aircraft that only burns 3 gallons of fuel an hour is a bit of a bonus these days!
Bicester would be a nice central location and with hanger space – both with the gliding club and possibly one of the other unused ones.
I think Bicester’s local residents might have some noise issues with a fleet of Harvards!
In addition there is only one hangar currently useable and this has a waiting list both for gliders and powered aircraft.
Whatever their source, wonderful atmospheric photographs. Thanks David for taking the time to post them for us all to savour.
To me an airfield or aerodrome is always worth visiting.
An airport is just something you pass through…..
Lovely pics 91Regal. It was the first time I have managed to get G-AISA across to Panshanger, to pose alongside G-AFSC. It was the first Tipsy I flew in, way back in 1974!!
A big thankyou due to Sue Hart and her colleagues at North London Aeroplane Club. They have created a great event there. Long may it prosper.
They “lost” Red 7 (XX280) a week or so ago after a bird strike, flame-out and emergency landing at Blackpool.
I understand the aircraft is still there. That may explain why they are down on numbers.
If they fly a ‘black’ Hawk, it will almost certainly have to fly as lead, as it will not have smoke system, nor the upgraded engine systems to enhance throttle response for close formation work.
I agree with Nev. VTTS just be applauded for being up-front in letting everyone know about the unservicability issue as soon as it became obvious.
Given the age and complexity of the airframe, I think it is a big credit to VTTS that they have had such a snag-free season.
I just hope that the aeroplane’s absence at Shoreham and Bournemouth doesn’t too adversely affect the planned announcments regarding fund-raising for 2012.
Desperately sad, thoughts are with family and friends.
Is it just me, or is ‘Prangin’ a bit of an unfortunate name for an airfield? :diablo:
Not G-AHET of course, but delighted to see this Vega Gull gracing the ‘Revival’ event and classic fly in at Panshanger yesterday.
A cracking event too!
Many, many congratulations Steve. If the rest of the film matches the quality of the trailer, we can llok forward to something special.
I wrote this obituary to the late Bill Goldfinch back in 2007. http://www.kingpinmedia.co.uk/_OtherSites/LutonMinor/LatestNews18.htm , plus links to his involvement with the reproduction Colditz glider and the ‘proper’ Telegraph obituary……
Delighted you enjoyed the talk. Preparations were a little more hasty than we would normally have liked, but ‘Blue Max’ and I couldn’t resist a trundle around the block, before we put the aeroplane on display!
