A quick search on google came up with this…..
DHC-1 Chipmunk. Probably an ex-RAF T10?
I haven’t got a pic of one, but the Army has!

However, the local council’s publicity machine has not been working very well – Brooklands Museum (where Wallis worked) did not know about the statue, nor did Wallis’s surviving children!
Iain.
The ultimate irony is that on that Saturday morning, former Vickers designer John Forbat was giving a fascinating lecture about Sir Barnes Wallis at the HAA Symposium, at Brooklands.
One interesting point was that Wallis was himself a talented sculptor and produced work in bronze that, dare I say it, was artistically a way ahead of the Herne Bay American import.
In the Q&A after John’s presentation, one point raised by an attendee was the apparent poor condition of Wallis’s grave at St Lawrence’s Church in Effingham, Surrey. Can any locally-based forumite give any details?
We sometimes forget just how many air show accidents we had in the UK up until the 1990s. A great deal of the credit for the improved safety record for recent air displays in the UK has to go to the man who made the first posting on this thread.
Take a bow ‘Skybolt’. It was his work at the CAA and before that, the efforts of the Historic Aircraft Association, which started the current system of display authorisation and self-policing by fellow air display pilots.
That is now enshrined in UK, in the Display Authorisation system where pilots are required to be assessed by display evaluators, experienced pilots themselves for both the type of display and aircraft used. They then recommend to the CAA whether a DA is issued.
There are also of course a full raft of regulations with which any air show organiser has to comply, on display lines, safety areas, distance from crowd etc. Accidents and and do happen, but they have for the past decade fulfilled their aims of keeping the crowd safe.
There is a fascinating ‘inside story’ on the early days of the Display Organisation procedure, written by former Farnborough test pilot Darryl Stinton, on the HAA website. http://www.haa-uk.aero/history.php
Bl**dy typical.
I guess this is what you get if you let a bunch of Spanish property developers run our airports!
Trouble is what do we do, we can hardly boycott them?
I know, I’ll stop buying Costa coffees or something :diablo:
Just spoken to the pilot, who is a forumite.
It sounds like he did a heck of a good job in very difficult circumstances.
I’m not going to comment on the accident – the AAIB get paid more than me to speculate – but the good news is that both occupants are OK.
The second occupant has back injuries but we are told will make a full recovery.
I’m sure the pilot will get round to posting something soon – but he’s a bit busy at the moment!!
Almost certainly a fake – but what a fake!!
Slightly longer version on YouTube…
Re: the Sky News article. I’m amazed that as so many are criticising the headline on the reply section below the story, that the News Editor hasn’t woken up and removed the offending words.
Sadly it says a lot for the poor standards in the News Room when the error is allowed to continue.
Can I suggest that everyone reading this thread, goes onto the Sky News link and records their criticism? Maybe they’ll get the hint?
Finally, condolences to the deceased pilot’s family and friends. Here’s hoping the second occupant of the aeroplane recovers.
Or come to Brooklands on the 15th and get a signed copy of this……..:diablo:
Sorry I couldn’t be there. But I don’t think that I or GAISA would have been too comfortable in the gusts!
Clearly what I need is an Airtourer!!;)
A quick communication with Tony Blackman last night revealed that he is planning to bring some short video clips with him on 15th, both of Roly Falk and himself demonstrating the Vulcans ‘capability’.
He did say however, they were happy to up-end prototypes but not operational aeroplanes. Something to do with too many bits of heavy kit and people rattling about in the back!
Ozplane, they weren’t wearing masks this year!! :diablo:
Don’t worry pageno1. I’ll ensure we post some highlights!!
Seems a bit harsh and slightly goading.
The problem with all of this is relying on memory and other peoples versions of the facts, even if slightly incorrect it is still worth posting your version if only to eek out the actual truth in someway.
Vulcan aerobatics is certainly one subject that sometimes falls into the subject of exagerated claims!
I can’t imagine someone like Tony Blackman, ex-Chief Test Pilot for Avro, making exaggerated claims!
We’ll have to wait for November 15th at Brooklands to find out!! 😉
Don’t worry Ollie, we’re working on it with the BE-2!
A great thread though…… for me more 1930s/40s sports aeroplanes would be wonderful, but in the UK at least, the Hitler….sorry History …Channel has proved that recycling WW2 documentaries is the way to make money.
PS. I can promise Propstrike that no accountant from Droitwich will get near our documentary!!
