The Napier Lion engine was used on a number of aeroplane types that operated in Egypt and would have had propellers produced at the Aboukir depot, which was a major RAF base.

The Fairey IIIF was probably the most numerous type and they were operated from bases in Egypt including Aboukir.

The Lion engine also powered Vickers Virginia heavy bombers and Vickers Vernon and Victoria transport aircraft which were operational in the Middle East until the middle of the 1930s.

I’m sure there are many better qualified on this forum to give you more detail, but at least I hope this is a start!

There isn’t an embargo as such. …..As Legends proves every year ….but:

Any former military aeroplane is subject to investigation as a potential ‘weapon of war’, involving all sorts of agencies from the FAA, to Homeland Security and Department of Defense.

If its over 60 years old, it also becomes at ‘potential national treasure’ and it’s leaving the USA may have to be approved by their heritage authorities.

It shows the worth of having a good, on the ball, shipping agent!!

Last week, l_garey posted a pretty comprehensive list of aeroplanes at Bicester in the early 1960s on the thread I started regarding 71MU.

Anyone with links to Seletar may be interested to know that sadly the old RAF infrastructure may well disappear soon as the airfield becomes a hi-tech aircraft ‘technology park’.

The attached link is to an interesting short movie made by some of Seletar’s current residents:

(watch out for Vampires, Mosquitos and Spitfires about 3 minutes in!!) 😉

L&S, yes some real corkers on the current 71 MU RAF Bicester thread – which you started!

Yes they’re interesting pics. But they just show the Beverleys, sort of standing around!

I’d be fascinated to discover just how they dismantled the beasts en-masse.

    I suspect, none too subtly!!

Fascinating thread this. Just used up my whole lunch hour, then some, working through it!

Anyone got any pics of things like the Beverleys being ‘reduced to produce’ at Bicester?

The building of Paul Jamieson’s six-wheeler was chronicled at the time in ‘Motor’ magazine. I seem to remember about 1974.

I also recollect seeing the other Meteor-engined 1930s style Rolls-Royce special at a Vintage Sports Car Club race meeting at Silverstone a few years ago….in the spectator’s car park! 😮
