Dazza – until you pointed that out I hadn’t noticed the extra 2 wheels compared to the 200/300 series. They only have a twin wheel body gear.

Yes and the same company also license built the Aeronca Chief light aircraft which they called the Pushpak. Kabir should be impressed with us!

India has an excellent history of license building aircraft.

I think the ATR will ultimately become the definitive turboprop freighter. It has great potential in that direction.

The P as the third letter of a UK ICAO code means Scottish civilian while the Q means either Scottish or Northern Ireland military.

I had forgotten about that. I hope it’s still going as it looked very nice.

4 blade prop was on the 200 series. 6 blade on the 500.

I’d be surprised if I didn’t end up down there at least once in April. Will you have a scanner? Perhaps I can slip you a message over the radio!

    RE: Airport codes

Pilots, controllers, ops personnel, etc use ICAO.
Travel agents, groundstaff, etc use IATA.

Flight plans are file using ICAO with airports using 4 letter codes and enroute navaids using 3 letter codes for VOR/DME/TACAN and 2 letter codes for NDB. Enroute waypoints not based on a ground beacon use 5 letter codes.

The 4 letter ICAO codes are broken down into 2 parts, the first 2 indicate the country and the second 2 the airfield. Main airports (in the UK) tend to have the last 2 letters the same to show their importance. e.g. EGKK-Gatwick, EGAA-Belfast International, EGSS-Stansted. Smaller airfields nearby generally use the same third letter and then their own final letter e.g. EGKR-Redhill, which is near Gatwick and EGSX-North Weald, which is near Stansted. (Please don’t anybody ask me why Newcastle isn’t EGNN, I don’t know!).

Because 4 letter ICAO codes aren’t always immediately identifiable a simpler system is used by IATA. Unfortunately this is still sometimes not as simple as it should be. E.g. is LAS Las Palmas or Las Vegas? (Question is for example purposes, I’m not looking for an answer).

    Hope this helps

Thanks Kab. Having done commercial exams in weight and balance it bothers me as a professional to have an incomplete knowledge of something that affects my day to day operation. I’m working tomorrow (thursday) so I’ll see if any of the engineers can give me a heads up.

That makes a lot of sense. Malta is a big stop off point on the migration routes.

Hi Preston, unfortunately I rarely if ever fly out of Manch. Also Santorini is a bit of an unpopular airport from a pilots perspective due to runway being very narrow and some inconsiderate bugger sticking a damn great big volcano in an awkward position! Looks like a nice destination when you’re there though!

Have fun in Lanzarote. I’m there tomorrow and again at the end of the month.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 05-02-03 AT 02:04 PM (GMT)]Saab paid dearly for that lack of backward compatibility. They also, like Dornier, took a bite of the Fairchild poison apple.

The Dash 8-400 did have some problems at the start but most aircraft do at the beginning. The A320 was initally referred to as the ‘John Wayne Plane’ in the early days because it was attracted to mountains, felled trees and killed Indians! Unfortunately the Dash’s problems became very public because everyone expected it to integrate perfectly from the very start.

Who can explain why people make the decisions they do. Perhaps the pricing is right, perhaps there’s political trading reasons, perhaps there’s something specific to the local conditions, perhaps there’s an excess of GPU’s in the far east, stc, etc.

misread an earlier post, I thought it was jeuneturc that said it was a 330.
