Performance wise, I don’t think you can get further apart than the A340-300 and the B757-200. The RB211 must be THE greatest aero engine of all time (maybe a mantle soon to be taken by the GE90).

batbay – It sounds like the starter selector for the number 3 was tech. The engine is then started by using bleed air from an already running engine by getting someone to manually open a pneumatic valve in the side of the engine casing. This is where the tool comes in.

About a year before I left Virgin they started a policy of explaining to passengers on the PA that the ground roll would be unusually long when departing JNB. In fact the reason the Virgin flight spends so long on the ground at JNB is to wait for the evening when the temperature will be cooler and the aircraft will perform better.

Jay – Having worked as a flying instructor for 2 years I joined my first airline (Virgin) in 1990 and stayed there for 9 years.

Unfortunately the prevailing wind in that region is generally south easterly so most approaches are to the other end of that runway. The departure should have you tracing more or less that route though.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 27-01-03 AT 01:25 PM (GMT)]I agree in principle…but if I had a single glass of wine 2 days ago I would still have some alcohol in my stream now. I can only hope that BA’s definition of ‘zero tolerance’ really means not exceeding the specified alcohol limits rather than all their pilots should have zero alcohol in their bloodstream. Otherwise they will have to amend everyones contract to specify are requirement that all their pilots must remain teetotal!

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 27-01-03 AT 01:01 PM (GMT)]Kev – was his alcohol level equivalent to having one glass of wine immediately before the test was taken or equivalent to having had one glass of wine the night before. I didn’t agree with this but up until a couple of years ago Air France pilots were allowed by their company to have a glass of wine inflight with their meal!

    Quote from JAR-OPS:
‘…crewmembers shall not consume alcohol less than 8 hours prior to the scheduled reporting time for flight duty or the commencement of standby…’
‘…crewmembers shall not commence a flight duty period with a blood alcohol level in excess of 0.2 promille…’

This alcohol level limit is one quarter of the UK driving limit. As an aside my outfit has imposed a company rule of no alcohol for 14 hours prior to duty.

Yes please Dave. Who are you going with? Malta is a nice easy airport to fly into and very civilised staff run the place.

I was wondering where you were!

Most likely a 757 but there is a slim chance of a minibus. Shame you’re not going the saturday before when I’m doing a Lyons!

    RE: The GE90-115B!

When fitted to the 777 it will have more than 9″ ground clearance. They will probably use the same technique they employed to squeeze the CFM under a 737 wing by using a pylon that primarily goes forward.

Yes I operated on it as cabin crew. B747 100, 200 & 400 as well. We would sit in our junpseats on the take off roll at JNB and time how many seconds it took to rotate in the rhin air. I seem to remember occasionally taking 75 seconds! Sit down and count to 75, it’s a long long time.

30 to 40 degrees below zero – and the rest! At this time of year it can get down to -60.

    RE: Mobile phones.

My mobile is on the Virgin system and my direct debit bill monthly is typically less than £1.50! I don’t do text, WAP or games and have no monthly fee. The 3210 is the same size as later mobiles, sends and receives calls exactly the same way so why should I buy fancy phones that do exactly the same when my mates are throwing away perfectly good handsets that do everything I need them to do!

By the way, being wealthy is as much about controlling what you spend as maximising what you earn. How do you justify spending several hundred quid on a phone that goes out of fashion quicker than a ‘Girls Aloud’ single?
