Do you mean with “only with the PIRATE” that the missile can’t be cued with another sensor? IF yes then no Typhoon can use the radar or MIDS to designate the target as well. PIRATE itself provides sufficient data for an AMRAAM launch at least at shorter distances.

I mean if theoretically an aircraft without the radar but with an IRST can launch an AMRAAM ….

Which is the detection range of Pirate?

Italy plans to reduce its order for Eurofighters

MILAN (Thomson Financial) – The Italian defence minister said the government is likely to reduce its order for the third tranche of Eurofighters due to the increased costs, following reports published by German business daily Handelsblatt.

According to the paper, Italy and the UK, which ordered the Eurofighers for delivery from 2012, are hesitating over the purchase of certain aircraft.

The ministry said in a statement that the funds allocated by Italy for the purchase have not changed, whereas the price of the individual Eurofighters has risen, and therefore the number of aircraft ordered will probably be reduced.

F104 is an old aircraft, AW129 is not an old helicopter, Cobra is older, Mangusta is only a bit light.

    Italy To Buy Aermacchi’s M-346
    By TOM KINGTON, ROME

The Italian Air Force is set to become the launch customer of the Alenia Aermacchi M-346 jet trainer aircraft, with an order of 14, a government official here said May 28.
Italy’s Ministry for Economic Development could use a law covering research-and-development investment to free funds to buy the aircraft, said Defense Undersecretary Lorenzo Forcieri.
“The Defense Ministry has written to the Ministry for Economic Development to include the request for 14 aircraft” within its funding, he said, adding that the ministry had already funded the construction of prototypes of the M-346.
The Air Force already flies Aermacchi’s MB-339 jet trainers, but Forcieri said that to enable the M-346 to find export customers, “it must first be adopted by the Italian Air Force.”
Aermacchi Chief Executive Carmelo Cosentino said the deal would “give a strong impulse to the credibility of our product.”
Aermacchi is now working on the first of 12 low-rate initial production aircraft, which will be lighter than the prototype aircraft. A prototype was delivered to the Italian Air Force in April to undergo technical evaluation.
