but again its possibly it may be used more as an amphibious as Italy also is wondering about F-35 costs and may not order enough to fully operate Cavour as a carrier.

No, the official Italian navy F35B requirement is 21 for full “aircraft carrier” capability, but they could be more if Garibaldi will be replaced by an other carrier.

Defense Department And Italy Sign Joint Strike Fighter Agreement

The Department of Defense announced today that Italy has signed the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) production, sustainment, and follow-on development (PSFD) memorandum of understanding (MOU) that will govern the cooperative program arrangements for the next phase of the Joint Strike Fighter program.

In the Feb 7 ceremony in the Pentagon Under Secretary of State for Defense Giovanni Forcieri added his signature to the agreement already signed by the United States, The Netherlands, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, Turkey, and Norway. The United States was represented by Deputy Secretary of Defense Gordon England.

This MOU provides a framework for future program efforts in production and beyond, and will extend cooperation beyond the current system development and demonstration agreement between the United States and the other eight JSF partner nations. The remaining partner nation, Denmark, is expected to sign the JSF PSFD MOU by the end of February 2007.

The Joint Strike Fighter is the largest DoD acquisition program to date. The F-35 Lightning II is a supersonic, multi-role, stealth fighter designed to replace a wide range of existing aircraft. Three versions of the aircraft will be built: a conventional-takeoff-and-landing variant, an aircraft-carrier version and a short-takeoff-and-vertical-landing version.

In addition to preparing for future production and sustainment activities, F-35 Lightning II development efforts are ongoing. The first JSF system development and demonstration test aircraft has already successfully flown seven test flights.

    Aermacchi Trainer Hits 0.96 Mach

A prototype of the Alenia Aermacchi M-346 jet trainer has flown at 0.96 Mach, beating its previous top speed of 0.85 Mach, the company reported this week.
A new release of flight control laws software allowed the increase in speed during a Dec. 29 flight, an official at the Finmeccanica subsidiary said.
โ€œThe new control laws software is now able to manage trans-sonic shockwave effects on air data sensorsโ€™ behavior, which was not yet embedded into the previous software,โ€ he said.
The aircraft tested in December was the second M-346 prototype. The first pre-production aircraft, now being built, is scheduled to fly in late 2007.
The M-346 is designed as a trans-sonic trainer, a speed the company believes satisfies the majority of training requirements.
โ€œThe aircraft will be able to go supersonic in dive, up to Mach 1.2, with the next flight control laws release,โ€ the official said.
