Could I suggest you give BreezeBrowser and try (http://www.breezesys.com). It’s a British program that categorises images based on EXIF and IPTC data which can can alter from within the program. Because it can change this data within the image itself, the image always carries this data with it, making it very easy to integrate into other programs. For example, I can write IPTC data to the image from BreezeBrowser and Adobe Bridge/PhotoShop/Lightroom or any other program will also see the data.

I can create as many shortcuts to an image as I like and edit the data from the shortcut rather than finding the original image.

Handy program for not much money.

Nikon are about to release a new 10.2 megapixel consumer d-slr. Final specs will be available in about 16 days. May be worth hanging on until then.

I’ve used a Nikon Coolscan IV to scan in a load of my fathers slides from the 60’s (See a few of them here) and – if you’ve got loads to do – it’s worth looking for scanners which have the ability to clean up your slides (Digital ICE on the Nikons) and restore faded colours. Either of these can be done in a editing program but it’s an awful lot easier to let the scanner software do the donkey work.

I have one of these lenses in Nikon fit and it’s okay in bright weather on a monopod but hand holding is difficult if you want to avoid camera shake. At 500mm it’s maximum aperture is F6.3 which sometimes makes for slow shutter speeds.

Something like the Panasonic DMCF7B with 12x optical zoom and image stabilization would probably serve better for aircraft photography.

What camera system are you using and do you shoot raw (not all HD storage systems will display all raw images)? Do you want to be able to review the images on a built in screen or just store them?

For the non-specific camera system market the Epson P2000/4000’s are very good.

That’s the exif data for this shot

This looks like the Fuji may have upped the exposure to try an brighten up the sky and in so doing has over exposed the plane. Try using exposure compensation or possibly the Fuji’s spot meter and meter off the plain itself rather than the whole scene.

I tried the same thing with my 4th gen iPod photo. I got it to work and then had to make the choice of either buying a LOT of spare batteries for the camera and a car charger for the iPod or think of something else. After a lot of digging on the net the consensus seems to be that compact flash cards are about the most reliable backup and with a 4gig card costing about £100 it’s not quite as expensive as it once was.

Not much help at the moment but it’s worth doing a full format of your memory card after moving images onto your computer. Because memory cards use the same Fat16 or Fat32 that older versions of Windows use they have an area for marking bad sectors. When you do a full format (that takes about 30 seconds on a 4 gig card) the operating system will mark bad sectors and the camera will not attempt to write to them (I learnt this the hard way). Do this everytime you clear files off a card and you should get fair warning of impeding problems.

    Hi,

I normally live in the Historic Forum, but need some advice please !

I plan as soon as funds are available to purchase a canon digital SLR, but at the moment i am using one of the Olympus £170 pocket type digi cameras ( its the wifes really )

Anyway would some of you experts have a quick look at the following post …… here you will find a a picture of HZ-123 Boeing 707 at Southend, the 1st pic is taken by someone else, and the 2nd by me. Both on simular overcast days but my picture is not sharp at all, does anyone know why?

Unless you’ve cropped that pic then the main subject wasn’t covered by the autofocussing point and the camera will be trying to focus on the clouds in the background. It doesn’t look too far out of focus because of the huge depth of field the small sensor and tiny focal length compacts have. With most cameras if you want the main subject to be off centre then centralize the subject to get focus, half press the shutter botton then recompose.

That’s interesting, I just looked through my slides and found I’ve also got a shot of KN452 taken at Khormaksar, although mine was taken in May 1967 by a dear departed work colleague.

Also found a nice shot of ZA947 at Waddington in September 1985 when she still wore her ‘rasberry ripple’ colour scheme.

    Have attached both for interest…

I’ll have a chat with dad about this. He was stationed at Khormaksar from 1965 to 1967 but the only shots he can be sure of when they were taken were at an open day in 1967 but he doesn’t think this shot was on that day. An awful lot we’ve just labelled as circa 1966 until we know better. I’m at the tip of the iceberg of his shots at the moment, he bought a Voigtlander Vito C camera whilst stationed in Germany in 1962 and I can only imagine film was cheap back then as there’s an awful lot to get through…..

Thanks for posting your shot, when he see’s it it may jolt his memory.

Sorry to jump in on this thread rather late but I came across this photo of Dakota KN452 taken around 1966 at RAF Khormaksar, Aden by my father. I noticed while search for some history of this plane that there are already pictures of this particular plane on this thread.
