[QUOTE=Snaps]The speed limit is 70 for a reason…and should be achieved if the road conditions allow.

I was told last week that the 70 MPH speed limit came about not because of loads of fatalities, but because of the then percieved fuel shortage and the government decided to impose a limit in an attempt to reduce excessive fuel consumption caused by high speeds.

I’ve also heard that the 70 limit was brought in on account of a certain Shelby Cobra streching its legs on a Motorway one day, and the resultant embarrassment caused to the Police, when they didnt have a car capable of getting anywhere near it !

    The topic grows !

When did the ‘speed kills’ slogan start being used…any idea’s ?

I dont recall hearing it back in the 70’s or even the 80’s and why is it relevant now when it wasnt then.

If you go back just over a hundred years or so, when the first mechanically propelled vehicles where being taken out and tried, it was thought that if a human went faster than they could run, then they must surely suffocate and die. But we didnt.

Yes, vehicles are capable of being driven faster and easier than even 10 years ago but with the general increase in number of vehicle’s on our current road infrastructure, I dont think that the average speed has increased by such an amount that we need to be told its dangerous every half hour, probably the opposite in fact.

You dont even need statistics to prove that with the current increasing population levels, there will be be more deaths simply because there will be more people driving !. More people driving = greater chance of a prang, its inevitable.

Smoking kills more people per day than traffic related incidents, but we dont get bombarded with ‘smoking kills’ adverts on the radio and telly. Fishing is potentially dangerous with the possibility of drowning, electrocution from overhead power cables, anaphylactic shock from insect stings, but I havent seen one advert in the press proudly informing me that its dangerous and I should do something about it

What it probably boils down to is some-one has clicked that there is a ‘captive audience’ out there in the real world and that wouldnt it be a good idea to target vehicle owners/drivers cos they cant escape, and its a jolly good pat on the back for an original idea.

Ditto for roadside camera’s, congestion charges, its rife !

It is a combination of things, but breathing is a start. Water is another – too much or too little will also kill you.;)

Had our collar felt, have we? 😉

    Nope, not at all.

I’m just fed with the local radio stations around here constantly telling all the listeners that speed kills, and I wondered what others think about the topic, thats all.

    Thanks for your replies guys.

The article I was refering to is indeed in the latest Flypast.

However, I’ve re-read it again and can see no mention of arming Chipmunks.

Infact my original text did not specify the Cyprus Chipmunks, but was aimed at anybody who had information about any trials or test’s or research into arming the Chipmunk.

    yup…he’s gone before us.

what gets me amused is all the modern day Elvis lookalikes who dye their hair black and grow the sideburns to try and look like the man and then they all without fail, ponce about in a white number with sequins (no doubt all carefull hand sewn on by devoted fans) and try and dance like the man.

what a load of sphericals !!!!!!

Elvis was at his best before the film / all white jump suit period and yet no-one tries to emulate him when he was at his greatest….check out the clothes for Jail House Rock…Love me Tender etc etc….classic Rock ‘n’ Roll stuff

Thats when he was at his best.

All we need now is a shed load of Freddie Mercury lookalikes !

The AT-11 version was a bomber trainer version with a transparant nose. Thought they were used by the USAAF purely to drup small dummy bombs, there can’t be much clearance for a torpedo below the aircraft????

Might be the wrong sort, not upto speed on the ’18, but I took these at Oshkosh this year and there aint much ground clearance under the fuselage….unless they hung one under wing root ?
