I havent seen the program specifically but I suspect the image you describe is due to the strobe effect, the original film of the aircraft is framing (flashing “still” images) at a different frequency to the television image, and the difference is causing the motion to appear backwards. PAL TV in Europe/Australia is framing or flashing “still” images at 50 times a second.

The same situation often occurs with films with “1930’s” or sports cars with spoked wheels, the speed of rotation of the wheel or propellor itself may also figure into the strobe effect and the rotation suddenly appears to reverse with and increase or decrease in engine speed.

For those interested in scientific experiment, putting a revolving fan in front of a TV screen, or waving your hand behind a fan and viewing from the front can create a similar effect, waving your hand “in” the fan is not recommended for the kids (viewing this forum) to try at home, as it might create a somewhat different effect!

    regards

    Mark Pilkington

Actually, the props, both single and contra rotating…all start off slowly and then spin up to speed. You know it going backwards cos on the contra rotating prop and some of the singles, the de-ice / leading edge protective strip is going backwards. Probably find the jet engine they show spooling up is in reverse as well !!!!

Bl**dy shame really cos it spoils the adverts that show forthcoming aviation programs and if they cant get the advert lead-in right, makes you wonder about the actuall program.

Perhaps we can tempt him back to the Historic forum only ?

heres a few for starters…with more to follow when he comes back !!!

Personally I dont frequent all the forums, some I’m ignored completely, some I get accused of all sorts of things by people who dont know any better, so as a rule I tend to stay away and that suits me just fine.

Dont give up, irrespective of personal reasons….but dont forget them !!, keep away from those rooms cos you are welcomed here !

oooops, wrong forum for the piccies, but he’ll know that anyway !

I brought one of these camera’s to replace my old….very old…Practica 35mm slr. just before I went to Oshkosh this year, hence all the piccies are from that event (awesome…if you havent been….go !)

Not sure what you class as vintage so I’ve not included the Venom, Fury and a few other jets.

Brilliant idea for the forum, hope it goes well.

    Anyway, heres my first offerings.

But I met a Rowan tree the other day that was very mean and bitchy. How can you make judgements about character from the personalities of trees?

Not wartime piccies admitidly, but I cant see someone lavishing the time and dosh to restore one of these babes only to take it to the largest aviation gathering in the World in the wrong colours….’corse, I might be wrong !.

Dont know if the attached are of any use and second guessing maybe some of your next Stearman questions, hence the external shots (and cos some of ’em where too big to upload, they probably wont be in order iether)

dont worry about it mate cos they are the people who are paying for the call…..accept the call but dont say a word, and just put the receiver / mobile down without ending the call.

They’ll soon get fed up of paying for a one sided call !
