Front row, 6 from left !….only know that cos I’ve got this piccies spread across two pages in a book in my library called, Mosquito,Typhoon, Tempest.

Is it a 609 Sqdn piccie ? reason for asking is that all the pictures over the next few pages in this book appear to be of 609…TallyHo side panel unmounted and also on the the plane, mess life shots, ‘foreign’ pilots etc etc.

    Cheers

RE: Shuttle lost (blows up?) on re-entry

I dont think ejector seats would be much good at the reported speed of 12,500.00 MPH when it broke up

Theres not a lot that anyone can say that would have any real meaning to this event.

Sorry, tough luck, commiserations etc dont seem strong enough.

Another tragic happening but manned space exploration will still go on, it has to, and there will probably be more fatalities, but thats the price that has to be paid when you venture where you really arent designed to go.

    Cheers

    Charles

All you ever need to know about aircraft rivets !! (as soon as I can get my scanner working !)

I have in my library a General Manual for Structural Repair (dated 1 July 1944) Its American in origin but has an eleven page section on rivets…types, full descriprtion, equipment, diameters, lengths, countersink dimensions, dimple countersinking,pre-riveting, guns, blind rivets, cherry rivets, chobert rivets, special rivets…I’d like to point out at this stage I know naff all about rivets!

The book covers the main element of aircraft structure, general working practice, materiels and identification, heat treatment, rivets, bolts screw nuts, fasteners, cable splicing, structural tubing repair, repair of transparent plastics, repair of wood aircraft structures, repair and fabrication of fabric covering, anticorrosion precautions, repair fheat exchange equipment, repair and replacement of fluid hose and tubing and tire changing and repair.

    Its a cracking little book.

    RE: Airshow Irritations!

Having attended the wessex Farewell at Akrotiri yesterday I realised what what was wrong in comparison with UK airshow’s….the position of the Sun. I found that a load of airshows I used to go to, I’d take umpteen films worth of piccies only to get them developed and find that whatever I was photographing was in silhoute (or however the hell its spelt !).

It made a refreshing change to have the sun behind the ‘crowdline’ cos everything was bathed in brilliant light and I got some cracking shots. If you see what I mean.

However, I fully realise that where the spectators are gonna sit doesnt really rate very highly in the the airfield planners list of things to do !

    cheers

    RE: Wessex Farewell

I’ll do better than that. I’ve got another twenty odd that I took today and as I didnt want to swamp the forum I only posted a few. drop me your e-mail and I’ll send over a few at a time.

Trust me…they look a lot better than the file size we can load allows.

What is your connection …isdn…broadband…telephone ?. I need to know so I dont swamp your set, and can send accordingly.

I alos managed to get a signed squadron print of an 84 Sqdn Wessex and a cracking new painting of of them fire fighting with the rain-maker bucket underneath…seen em use that loads out here !!

    cheers

    RE: tornadoes Cyprus style

    Twilight

The big one was one of four seperate twisters that formed at near enough the same time. It is unusual for them to come ashore, the last time was back in the late sixties according to the news out here.

Around this time of year you often get twisters. I have on video the first year I came out here, a shot of six all in a line starting off small to the right and getting progressively bigger until splashdown then fizzing out when the hit land to the left of where I was filming. Not summat you normally see around the UK.

Driving back from the Wessex Farewell display at Akrotiri this afternoon at 20 past 3, there were two samll twisters out towards Paphos but they never connected to the sea surface.

Thanx for the comments on the piccies. As I said, it really was that dark…and for 9.45 in the morning….well !

    cheers

    RE: Vulcans?

Last time I saw a Vulcan fly was at the Battle of Britain 50th at Boscombe down. I was at the end of the runway by the car park where she pulled up ready to go. Throttles got advanced to 80 % to check T’s and P’s and then brakes off and firewall the loudlevers.

That olympus scream still sends shivers down my back and the hairs on the back of my neck stand up thinking about it.

I got a brilliant video of the take off run and she rotated just level me…..then the sound of her engines was drowned out as 500 car alarms went off !!!!!. I was not best pleased is the polite way of saying what I want to say !.

However, ya never know, one day ???

    cheers

Well its funny you should say that….the Red Arrows (who’ve been out here practicing for a few weeks) suddenly werent around and there was a distinct lack of civvie jets going along the corridor into Paphos !!

I dunno…just cos of a little bit of turbulence ….!

Gotta admit tho’, it was chuffing awesome to see in action, and I really feel for those 40 odd people who where injured and all those who had property damaged / destroyed. there wouldn’t have been a thing they could do to stop it.

    Cheers
